This time of year the focus is on players that we can trade or draft into the club to improve our prospects next year.

However, if this group is going to add flag #2 to their resume, it will likely be on the back of the 36-odd players we already have, and not the 5 we’re adding this off-season.

Who do you have earmarked as the players amongst our current cattle that could carry us back up the ladder next year?

My first nomination is Josh Dunkley. I feel that the quality of his first season was obscured by a shoulder injury that kept him out of all but 7 games this year. This is a player that at 19 was among our best in the Semi Final and Preliminary Final, capping off an unexpectedly impactful first campaign.

With his physical attributes, defensive effort and ability to hit the scoreboard, I think 20+ games from Josh could be a key to returning the grunt and versatility to our midfield that was lacking for much of 2017.

My second nomination is Marcus Adams. If he can stay on the park he could be our pillar at FB for the next 5-6 years. A consistent back 6-7 players would be a huge improvement on the revolving door backline we had this year, and Marcus has demonstrated that he can be a critical component of that group. He only has to play at the level he has previously for 20 games next year for our team to be much better. Hopefully there’s still some improvement in him too. Cordy & Trengove manning up KPFs while Wood and Adams fly for intercept marks would make our defence at once harder to score on and more attacking.

Where do you guys see the internal improvement coming from next year?

The one I want the most improvement from is actually Macrae of all people. He's a fantastic player but if he could become a goal kicking threat then he'd be the complete player.

Adams is also another player if only because I feel he's slightly too big for him to sustain during a season.

Who I think (hope) will improve:
Libba
Dahlhaus
Boyd
Macrae (already a gun but can become elite)
Lipinski
English
Wood
Cordy
Collins
Dunkley (although I’m not a massive fan due to his kicking)
Adams
JJ

About the same
Mclean
Daniel
Suckling
Biggs
Bont (already elite despite what people have said this year)
Roughead
Campbell
Young
Wallis
Hunter
Roberts
Jong
Webb
Greene
Dale (think he has one more year maintaining his form before going further)
Williams
Redpath

Who may decline
Dickson
Picken
Cloke
Smith
Morris

NA
Crameri
Honeychurch
R Smith

Libba. His quality of output during the finals was underrated. Linchpin in many of the big plays. Him and Bont are our two damaging skilled kicks going into forward line. His attack on ball and possession rate was ridiculously bad this year. Just getting back to 2016 form is enough but can go better if the penny has truly dropped.

Boyd 2016 GF style every game is required. If the rumoured reason for his woes this year is now gone, we need that guy from October 1.

Wood. Despite his B&F result, just wasn’t the same this year. Spent more time putting out spot fires in a damaged defensive structure than attacking the intercept and running. Full season Adams, Trengove, Cordy not as key defender hopefully re-releases the 2015-16 version.

McLean/Daniel/Dale. Need to get better again. 3 very talented young players with skill we need to be utilised. Toby overhead get out of jail marking, Dale to replace Dickson as the “this will be a certain goal” forward and Caleb to find holes in opposing defenses is vital to staying ahead of others trying to get in/back in the Eight.

Bont’s goalkicking. Should have kicked 40+ this year. Could get Brad Johnson scoring from him for next decade.

20 goals from Macrae would be massive.

Macrae has played 99 games for 21 goals so far and is a transitional
player who works back hard, it is rare for these types to be big
goal kickers. Goal assists is more his wheel house or area of strength.
We now have lots of talls, but most are either raw or out of favour
with the coach. For me the internal improvement must come from
the likes of Williams, Webb, Crozier, Dale, McLean, Hunter, Dunkley
and of course our gun forward Jong from the goal square.

Agree on Macrae- that’s why I thought it would be massive. Bont assists and scores. Having two talented big left footed midfielders doing it would be even better and an improvement. Add Libba to that and even better.

I'm thinking (hoping) we get that amazing team spirit back more than anything. Hopefully purging Jake the Baggage triggers a renewed unity again
Got a feeling Trengove might have a part to play in this. Hope so anyway.

yeah i think people are underestimating the impact Trengove will have and the flow on effect of releasing other players like Wood in our back line.
I meant his effect on morale and team spirit. Seems to be a positive influence, according to Port fans.

I understand that, i was more to the point that there isn't much being said about his onfield role. I believe he will have a massive impact on our structure.

A fit, focused, fanatical Libba makes everyone better and takes pressure away from Bont.
Wally will hopefully be back to his best and can swap with the above mentioned going forward.
Tory Dickson has another 50 goal season left in him.
Zaine Cordy is still on an upward curve......expect him to play defensive forward again (at times)now that we have more backline options
Easton wood is an AFL top 20 player at his best
Marcus Adams deserves a fair go with the injury gods and hopefully the wheel has turned with our shit luck re injury in recent seasons

The guys who had the Premiership hangover: Toyd, Libba, Roughead, Roberts, Clay Smith & Dickson.
