I am in the USA and I have been haveing a wonderful relationship with a beautiful aussie lady. Everyone says it is impossible to do but I dont think so. (not anymore) I look forward to shareing everything and experiencing footy for the first time together. Leave a note if you have had a similar relationship and how it went or if you just have some of those wonderful hate comments.

I'm an American currently in Melbourne on a six-month visa staying with my significant other; we are unofficially engaged. When the six months are up she will be going back to the states with me for another six months. We will have lived a total of 12 months together by then which enables me to apply for a PR visa to come back to Australia where I will be able to live and work here as long as I choose. Several years down the road I will be applying for a dual citizenship should things stay on course.

I have had a passing interest in Australian Rules since the mid-1980s when they would show it on cable but I had never had any real understanding of the game or followed any one club until my first trip over here in 1999 when my fiancee's father (an enthusiastic Essendon supporter) took us to a home-and-away match at the MCG and got me hooked.

I know of one other person in here in a similar situation only she's on the other side (the Australian) - lioness22.

Good luck.

OK this is the man I have been raving on and on about in my posts, and especially in chat.

I am very proud to call him mine, and I'm sure you can all see why. International relationships can be very hard at times, but personally, it's the best thing that's ever happened to me.

I know that some of you will just be dying to make fun of us

Even if you haven't experienced an international relationship, do tell us what you think of the idea........we aren't afraid!!!!!!

lol Would you do it???

My missus is a yank, she's been in the country for a year and a half, and we've been an item for just over a year.

Ran into her online, through a social chat that was so friendly and well-ordered that international parties were often organised with folks getting plane tickets from one country to another just to get blind as a group.

So when she scored a job on an aussie film, she had a dozen 'trustable' mates to stay go and meet. The film fell through, so she turned it into a holiday, and amongst those she met, was me. We hit it off at one of the parties (ie:not until we'd known each other face to face for a few weeks) and she's since won a residency visa, things couldn't be grouser.

Photo of us (exhibit #1 : glee) can be viewed at http://www.lexicon.net/POTOC/Current.html

On the Visa issue, for residency, the general story is that its somewhat tricky to gain one unless yer marry the aussie. It also costs a mint to apply. Thing is, though, sometimes its worth it!

Best of luck to the Lion-people, and to the Stealth-thingy.

You two make a handsome couple !

Anyone having MAJOR difficulty getting residency in Australia can always try the back door ...

Go to New Zealand first - chill there for a while and get NZ residency - then come to Australia.

NZ residents get automatic visa-free entry into Australia and can enjoy almost all the benefits of Residency straight away.

No red tape, no paperwork, no hassles - just get off the plane and start laughing.

cheers

Good luck Lioness22 and Lionstrike with the international relationship.

A close friend of mine met her current partner while travelling overseas. They've been together for about 4 years now and it looks like he'll be granted permanent residency for Australia. There is a lot of paperwork involved, but they felt that if you just stayed calm and did everything the governemnt departments asked you to do, you would eventually get residency.

Or you could just do as Bloodstained Angel suggested and use the back door via Nu Zalund.

Aww, aren't you guys a sweet couple

To answer your previous question; yes, you always need a visa to come over here, but it's a cinch if you're staying 90 days or less. If you want to stay longer than three months there's a bit more work involved.

If you wanna come for up to 90 days, you need an ETA which is really easy to get; travel agents can do it over the computer in five minutes; it might cost like $15. You just give 'em the passport and they do the rest.

Longer than three months requires a bit more effort - I had to submit several items plus my passport to the Australian embassy for approval. I had to have proof of financial support while over here, proof that I had available employment when I got back,a letter from my Australian host telling them they were happy to have me and photocopies of my plane tickets - I guess they need all these things to prove that you plan on returning home when the time is up (in other words, you aren't defecting). All the postage and processing involved totaled up to around $50-60.

It was all worth it though; cause I came over in early December and my squeeze and I are having a ball; already been up to Sydney to see the touristy stuff. And I'm here until June

Hey mobbenfuhrer, you guys look really good together
smile.gif
Thanks everyone for your advice, I think the staying calm part is gonna be hard for BOTH of us hehehe, and the New Zealand idea is looking very attractive LOL. We were looking at marriage (I think, lol, ummmmmmm I could really get myself in trouble here!!!!!!
tongue.gif
kidding sweetie
smile.gif
) but they seem to like want us to do it as soon as he steps off the bloody plane!!!!!!
eek.gif
which I know is not really what either of us had in mind!!!!!!!! (doesn't scare me, but still) Whatever we have to go through to be together will undoubtedly be worth it
biggrin.gif
So we will do our best to stay calm, and do everything the government tells us to, and see how it goes. The end result (being together) is more than worth all the hassle.

Sorry I didn't include Bigfootyites with our original broadcast of that Seasons Greetings site, yers slipped me mind.

Thanks for the kind words. With the broadcast of the photo now Joffa will forget niceties and open fire on me, knowing that the nickname is a bignote overexaggeration, and that he could beat me up with a straw hat!

Lemme' just say thanks to all of you who gave sound advice. I and my better half appreciate the assist. I am still a bit lost on how to get the visa but I am sure that time will prove itself out. Did not mean to crowd the footy chat with such a topic but who better to bring it up with the the people of Aus. Thanks again. Keep writing, I am checking daily.

Smokey,

I think, tangentially, this IS a sports-related topic. Notice that Lionstrike and Stealth-Bomber are both taking apparently heavy interest in AFL, perhaps being interested before their respective relationships commenced.

My seppo missus didn't like any sport at all while in the states. I took her to a number of Coburg-Fitzroy matches, in which she found that although she's still not overly rapt in sport, apparently, now, Aussie Rules is more to her liking than any other.

So I believe that, whether or not its with intent, the game is being promoted via this relationship medium.

Just my opinion.

Smokey - oh come on!!!!! In recent times we have had favourite bands, favourite food favourite hour of the day, TONS of absolutely NOT footy-related topics on here. Lionstrike is a Brisbane Lions football club member for 2001 (or will be in a very short time) he has a genuine interest in the game, as anyone who has spoken to him in chat will know, he is trying very hard to learn as much as he can about the game. He even has official Brisbane Lions FC merchandise!!!!!! (hehehehe isn't that right honey
smile.gif
) He knows many people who regularly post on this site, so felt comfortable in asking OUR advice, as Australians and footy fans. So lay off. Besides, I believe I see the word 'footy' in his first post, that would make it footy related right??? Yes.
