Czech Republic and Latvia the big upsets. If Wales had held on against Finland they would have topped the group. England now only need a point against Turkey to go straight through, while Ireland have to win in Switzerland just to make the play-offs.

Some interesting results in South America, Bolivia thumping Colombia 4-0.

Seems pretty likely we will have to play the 5th South American team in a play-off again after Sepp "I'm a corrupt pig f***er" Blatter said the fact Oceania's representative resigned was a sign the region was in disarray.

After 2 games Brazil are on 6 points, Argentina 4 and a lot of teams on 3.

The South Americans are saying that their 5th place side will be playing the 5th placed CONCACAF side, which means that we may well end up playing Iran again.

I hope you're right and that we will play the Asian team, it would make sense given that we're in the same timezone/area, rather than having to go over to the Americas. I still hope the mooted group with all the half place winners playing a round-robin with the top 2 going through gets up though. I wouldn't mind getting a crack at Iran again for some revenge.

BTW, all these international results and the most important one was missed:

One idea I've thought of for the qualifiers would be that while AFC and OFC would remain separate, they would have a joint second round qualifying stage. This would mean 12 group winners (10 Asian and 2 Oceanian) into two groups of six, with the top two qualifying automatically. It makes sense because the 12 first stage groups would be roughly equal (everything is relative though) with at least one competitive or semi-competitive side in each.

With regards to the Euro 2004 qualifiers, well done to the Czech Republic, Sweden and Bulgaria. At the same time it's good to see that Latvia, Bosnia-Herczegovina and Iceland- three previously unheralded sides- are all still in contention. Will we see a surprise qualifier?

Could it be that many of the "minnows" of European football have improved in recent years? Even Liechtenstein no longer disgrace themselves like they once did- seven years ago they were clobbered 11-1 (just short of a record) by Macedonia in a WC qualifier. In the Euro 2004 qualifiers, they restricted England to 2-0 wins and drew with Macedonia. And back in the Euro 2000 qualifiers Andorra managed to restrict France to 1-0 and 2-0 wins.

Even back then the signs were there when Azerbaijan beat Switzerland 1-0 in their opening WC qualifier. The ESPN commentators were saying that this could be the start of many upsets- the remnants of the former Soviet Union and former Yugoslavia inheriting their strong footballing traditions. That's certainly true of Croatia and Slovenia (who have qualified for major tournaments) and the Ukraine (who haven't yet, but are competitive at club and international level).

I think the movement of players between leagues has helped, but there could be other factors too.
