AFL Club
Richmond
This match was uploaded onto youtube 18 hours ago. The game was played at Marvel Stadium, back then it was called Telstra Dome. For those interested, see full game below:

Up to that point, Australia had never beaten Ireland in Melbourne. Australia won by 21 points.

I didnt mind the International Rules series and it gave the AFL players an opportunity to represent their country on the world stage playing a game which had some of the same aspects as Aussie Rules footy.

Not sure if the Internationals Rules series is returning? Anyone know?

IIRC It was going to return on a biannual schedule, but COVID got it canceled.

Since then the GAA has split its season so now the end of our season is still in the GAA season. So I'm not sure if it's possible to schedule anymore without it interrupting someone's season.

It's not dead, but I'm not sure if it can come back, even if there was a will. Which is sad as I loved it too.

I would prefer to see the International Rules series come back rather than State of Origin to be honest, in my opinion.

The AFL should focus on this, rather than State of Origin.

Just alternate between the two, international rules series in odd numbered years and origin in even numbered years.

Ex...

2026- WA v Vic
2027- Intl Rules Series in Ireland
2028- SA v Vic
2029- Intl Rules Series in Australia
2030- WA v SA
2031- Intl Rules Series in Ireland
.....and so on

Frequent enough that each maintains a steady place in the calender on their given years, but rare enough that when it roles around it's still a special event

All I remember from that test was Chris Johnson clotheslining one of the Irish players

It was good but too risky with injuries imo.
I dislike this approach that people in the afl world seems to have.

I get winning a flag for your AFL club is the pinnacle and I get the clubs pay the money, but it's competitive sport and the industry exists as an entertainment product for its fans.

The chance at representative honours for some players would be exciting and fans of the game should be treated on occasion to unique and representative events. Yeah there is a risk of injury, but that's life and even more specifically that's Pro sport.

You think blokes who live and play club soccer in Europe even think twice before jetting half way a across the world multiple times a year to play in international matches?

I agree in not putting vulnerable players in risky predicaments, but living with an attitude of everything being a risk of injury will only continue to lead down a path where fun and special events are strangled and drained from the game even more

No.

Gaelic rules isn't worth anything. They shoukd try play us at our game and see how they go. We've beaten them at theirs lol. State of origin now back no chance that happens too.

South Fremantle bulldogs would beat them by 40 goals.

Look I hear what your saying, but in futbol the pinicle for a player is winning the world cup, this is the same with rugby league, the pinicle is winning state of origin (ask any queenslander and they will tell you that they would prefer to win SOO over the broncos/cowboys/dolphins winning the telstra premiership).

The afl have no history of wanting to win state of origin, its all about the last Saturday in September.

I appreciate the notion of having other competitions for fans to get excited about and for there to be opportunities to se different groupings of players together, but the adapted form of Gaelic football we played under the guise of an international hybrid game was hardly something to feel proud of or an effective means to create an alternative means of footy fan engagement. We want to see people playing our game and for something meaningful.

That's why a legitimate attempt at resurrecting SOO would be a far better endeavour. There is no real international competition for our game, but no need to force us into playing a different sport to achieve representative honours. Allow players to instead represent their state, which is something meaningful and something fans can get behind and enjoy.
