Next Monday the Australian squad will start a training camp with the round ball. (A Gaelic football is the same size as a soccer ball but a bit more heavy so it doesn't deviate as much in flight as a soccer ball)

The two tests are on the 8th and 15th October at Dublin's Croke Park. It is currently half built, the old stands demolished to make way for a grand 80,000 seat stadium. Capacity will be around 50,000.

Apparently there's been a fair bit of interest in Ireland, but a big hitch has occured. The All-Ireland Final between Kerry and Galway last Sunday was a draw (by the way there was nothing at all in the Aussie press - despite results from virtually any other foreign sport). This game will be replayed the day before the first test. Our team may get to see it, but it will affect ticket sales to the international match and about half a dozen of Ireland's best will be unavailable for the first test. The Irish media are giving the GAA a "we told you so" as the problem was pointed out when their season's fixtures were announced. http://www.ireland.com/sports/gaa/2000/0927/news1.htm

Nonetheless I'm looking forward to the late night telecasts.
Here's a Gaelic games message board: http://www.anfearrua.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000069.html

I love to watch the international rules games, should be great to see but i hope it will run as smoothly as possible. Also i would like to see in the very near future, the All Australian team play the best American team as aussi rules in America is thriving, now up to 35 teams! but I still think the aussies would win pretty well but it would be good to see.

Also http://www.calfooty.com for the canadian footy league in which San Diego Lions won.
I support, wait for it, the Inland Empire EAGLES who finished second on the ladder. I FULLY SUPPORT AMERICA'S GROWTH OF AUSSI FOOTY.

It'll be a long time before the USA could field a team that could score a goal against the All-Australian line-up. Mind you with the growth of footy in the USA they could perhaps take on a state amatuer league side (ie WA, SA or Vic) within a decade - and that's a pretty good standard of footy.

For the next 20 or 30 years the pinnacle of international sport for Australian Rules players will be the games against Ireland. And good games they are - I was just watching a tape I took of the match in Dublin 2 years ago that the Australians stole victory in the dying minutes - their jubilation -it was like a Grand Final.

I trust that by next week I won't be the only one driving this thread.
If you've seen the last two series you'll know that Nathan Buckley kept us in all the games against the Irish -literally worth half our score (because he kicked it in some games and had about half the team's possessions). Without him it's gonna be hard, so it was heartening to see Dermie wax lyrical about James Hird's skill and enthusiasm. Hird's missed all the internationals with his foot injury.

PS I watched the Kerry v Galway Final on SBS yesterday. They really can move the ball pretty quick.

Peter,

There's heaps of Gaelic stuff on cable - that crazy 'game' Hurling as well as the footy - so everyone should get access to it.

I went to the 'G last year and was blown away by the spectacle. Hopefully this time 'round, we won't pick lumbering dinosaurs ( i.e. anyone over 6' 4" ) and some blokes who have actually played before.

Thanks for those Irish links.

Saw this in one of the links ..

The Irish boss has been keeping a wary eye on the Australian players by tuning into their domestic matches for the last few months. One player in particular that caught his eye was 6'8" Wayne Carey. At that height, he's hard to miss, and he'll certainly be a handful in Croker if - anyone can get hold of him.

Cripes ! Wayne's still growing !

Now that we have this Olympic Games nonsense out of the way we can get back to something really interesting

MORE FOOTY

A big spanner in thew works for this years opening test is that it is going to played the day after the All-Ireland final, which has to be replayed because the original fixture was a draw.

This means that at least six top Irish players will be missing the test match. It will make the game easier for the Aussies to win, but because of the scheduling stuff-up, the game could be a fizzer from crowd point of view. A hoped for attendance of around 50,000 is looking optimistic to say the least.

Oh by the way - yes I have been away for the last couple of weeks, and no, I don't want to discuss the Olympics in any way, shape or form

Bernie like most Australians I don't have cable. I think Seven could make something of getting a Gaelic highlights package and showing it through the season - perhaps early Sunday morn before their regular sports program. the GAA season runs in conjunction with the AFL season so when the International Rules comes up there's a season's build up with knowledge of the irish stars etc.

I am looking forward to the games too but I would be lying if I failed to admit that having no saints players in the squad takes the gloss off the match a little.

Still, the games will be a great test and I am looking forward to them.

Peter,

I don't think any saints players deserved to be in the squad after their performances this year.

That was not my point.

All I was saying was that as a saints fan, having no St Kilda players will take a bit of gloss of the games for me.

There was no better feeling for me than watching the State of Origin over the years and seeing guys from your team win the E.J Whitten trophy.

But I am still looking forward to the series. It's payback time for the Aussies.

No Eagles or Docker players in the squad this year - so not much gloss on the series over west. Also with Buckley and Lloyd not playing I would be suprised if Australia could win the series.

Still, It's exciting to watch and It's a quick paced game, like our code
