Putting my future cap on I wonder after winning the flag this season how may free to air games we will get in Melbourne next season and how many Friday night games..........always a good way to get the kids following us when they see how fab we are and such great colors as well.

IIRC even while 3peating and in 2004 we didn't get many Friday night games... maybe none.

but we were the saturday night specialists at the time on channel 10.

Hudson, Quartermain, Lane, Walls...I don't recall ever having any complaints about the commentary back then. How did it get so bad?

There were plenty of complaints. There always is. There always has been. There always will be.

Maybe constantly winning overshadowed it but I personally had no qualms, heard no qualms and I'd be willing to bet the amount of complaints paled in comparison to those of today.

played a semi final against the crows at the gabba on the friday night

That was the one where Voss came off his bike around quarter time when it wasn't even clear he was going to play, and we ended up flogging them, right? I was there for that one. Good night. :D

I remember that - no live FTA, so staying up past midnight to watch the game. Not to mention having the result spoiled by SportsCentre "newsflashes" just before the coverage started.

Plenty of complaints about Quartermain (dull), and some about Lane (felt he was too pro-Carlton). In retrospect though...

Maybe it's just a grass is greener scenario but if I had the choice today I'd take dull, Carlton bias or suggestions to run through the ruck over what we've got. Winning probably took the focus but for the most part I didn't even notice the commentary back then which is ideally how it should be imo.

Did people spend as much time on the umpiring back then as well or is that also part of the 'evolution'?
Not that I recall, but it was a lot easier to adjudicate when the average contest was only a couple of players and often they were traipsing through a paddock's worth of space as opposed to 8 to 20 players gathered around a ball.

I was 13-22 during the Channel 10 broadcast era so it is going to always be my favourite I think. Its probably just nostalgia but I genuinely think the commentary was broadly far better (though Michael Christian was dreadful). But even with the flaws of that group the absence of BT is a pretty big plus.

Holy Grail easily the best intro song for the coverage too.

Commentary has gotten worse but on the plus side no one has to listen to Dougie Hawkins or Mick McGuane's "special comments" anymore. And you can generally avoid Tony Shaw on the radio.

There's an 11-minute discussion of the Lions and some fascinating Champion Data stats in the latest RSN By The Numbers podcast. Highly recommended listening from 7:00 in.

Yes, well worth a listen. Very enlightening
