Let me set the scene.
Sitting around watching a movie (some weird-arse thriller named We Need to Talk About Kevin; a pretty good movie, thanks for asking) last night with Go running. I'm just under 500 XP away from ranking up. I only have three Poke Balls left, though, so in order to rank up my next target needs to be either something I can evolve, or something to add to my Pokedex. I check my candies. I have enough to evolve a Pidgey, but having just evolved my last one, I don't have a Pidgey on me.
Five minutes later, I feel my phone buzz. I look at it and there's a Pidgey right on top of me. I tap it, and spend a good few seconds staring the mother****** down to assert my authority, before catching my breath and beginning my journey to level 7 goodness.
I strike the first Poke Ball pretty well, getting some nice curve and the perfect angle. My depth perception fails me, though, and the ball falls short. I compose myself and stare down the bastard some more. The poor thing has no chance. That useless arsehole Ash may have failed to catch you once before, but I'm the real Pokemon master around these parts.
After sufficiently intimidating the runt, I swipe once more. No curve this time; no need for anything fancy, I've got this. I nail it. Perfect angle, perfect depth...but the Pidgey has other ideas. He decides now would be the perfect time to rebel against me and do its cry. As a result, it charges forward, and I watch as the Poke Ball sails cleanly over its head. What an arse hat.
My last chance. I look through the Pidgey's eyes into its soul, take a deep breath, and hold my finger on the Poke Ball for a few seconds; watching, waiting. I see it begin to jump and I know my chance is coming. I wait for it to land and then throw the ball perfectly again, knowing that the Pidgey is unlikely to jump for a little while after just coming down...
... but it was a fake out; the Pidgey lands and almost immediately jumps once more and I can almost see the campaigner start to laugh at me. The Poke Ball advances in slow motion as I watch through my fingers. It lightly clips the Pidgey's foot and falls onto the ground, mocking me.
I threw my phone.
