I've been trying to think of a reason for not including a usb input for 3 days and can't think of one.

Photos -This machine shows your photos magnificently (putting them on the ipad is impossible though)

Music - see above.

Websites -see above (getting the websites onto paper eg. printing, is impossible though)

AFAIK this isn't something that can be fixed via an OS upgrade. There will probably be a nice usb attachment available for $50 or so though.

Not impossible at all. You sync it to your computer the same as an iPhone/Touch. It's not designed to be a stand alone devise at this stage. The printing side of things isn't clear, the software isn't capable yet, and whether the aim is to achieve that wirelessly once it is, either on it's own or via your main computer, one can only speculate. You'd think a USB port wouldn't be that hard, and yes, there is an overpriced adapter, so I'm cynical about that part at least.

As far as the other posts go, if you don't think it fits your needs at this stage, you don't have to buy one, no one's holding a gun at your head. Just wait and see how it develops.

If you want Flash support though, it's not going to happen. If having multiple windows displaying flash open can crash a browser on a Mac Pro, it'll play havoc with a low powered, battery device, it's just too processor intensive and inefficient. It's never worked well on Macs, and probably never will, if Adobe's current position is anything to go by. There are other, more advanced alternatives, so it seems Apple are trying to force the issue with web designers. If your site has flash, you'll be missing out on hits, so make the move to something better. As it is, on many sites all you'll miss out on is ads anyway. It's still not ideal, but Apple seem to have decided that this is a battle they're determined to have, and they'd rather put restrictions in place to prevent poor performance, for which they would inevitably be blamed.

It'll be interesting to see how it all develops. I'm just curious observer at this stage, my credit card is in no danger yet.

Sorry clueless, but a far larger proportion of the world uses Flash-compatible devices than doesn't.

I'm not advocating anything, only describing what seems to be the reason why Apple isn't supporting it on their mobile devices. Make of it what you will, I was only trying to contribute to the debate. My mistake. I'm sure "it hasn't got flash!!! I gotta have flash!!! it's useless without flash!!!!" would be your more informative style.

With all that, why pay US$489 for Amazon’s Kindle DX to read static black and white text and listen to a few MP3s when for just $10 more you can get a base model iPad? The iPad’s the same size screen, but in colour and with video and games and the internet and 16GB of flash memory instead of 3.3GB and it is, really, a complete general purpose computer.

I have a Dell laptop and an Asus netbook. They're not crap, I've never had a problem with either and no, they don't make big announcements. They just work, are well-priced, and don't need expensive peripherals. Surprise, surprise, they already have those peripherals built into the unit.

And I don't play games on the Internet. Or off it, for that matter.

The uptake in Australia will be directly proportional to the ability to access e-books through iTunes.

I'm having a lot of trouble understanding how the iPad will be any better as an e-book reader c.f. a laptop.

Kindle (and other actual e-book readers) are expensive because of their unique screen techonology. The iPad does not, afaik, have this.

If the iPad could do what a good e-book reader does AND browse the web etc for $500 then it'd be an interesting device.

i sell technology im not a mac fanboy, but i can still recommend a mac when i think its needed, (we dont sell em). but i dont know how to justify an ipad to anyone.

I can only think of a few basic things.

- Watch TV / movies on public transport on a bigger screen
- Read a book without having to go into a shop to physically buy a book
- Internet access without having to go all the way from your couch to your computer, your computer which probably supports flash of course.

- Apple makes money

It's sad people like red+black can't admit Apple is trying to ream him for all he is worth.

I wasn't excited about it's impending release. Once I saw it, I thought it looked appealing, aesthetically. But the lack of features is obviously appalling, insulting and condescending. Personally, I have to decide whether I consider a MacBook Air, a 13" Macbook Pro or a 10" Wintel Netbook. Although a Chrome OS netbook could get me wet.

Disclaimer: my 6-month old iPhone is the only Apple product I own, apart from a free iPod I got a few years back.

Well I actually have a use for this device.
All of my magazines are electronic, I have free WiFi in my place of work and I don't want another phone bill. It's perfect size for me to read my mags, watch some videos or browse the net on my lunch break and while traveling. And I can sync it with my iTunes and podcasts.

Just because you don't have a use for it doesn't mean it's irrelevant and useless. That's just your irrelevant and useless opinion....
