The only problem once they release the new features is waiting for the bloody update to become live. I really hope that multitasking is added but really not sure why they would bother until the new phone is released midyear.

I don't think this would go live until iPhone 4. It will be pushed out for developers, but no point putting it out solely for iPhone 3GS. If that was the case, then a dual release of iPad + OS4.0 would of been easier.

Gonna be released Summer 2010 (so Julyish)

First new feature .... multitasking :thumbsu:

They were waiting so they could do it perfect without draining the battery, like Cut+Paste

And Springboard/Home Screen customisation :thumbsu:

They have 7 major updates. These are the smaller ones

- Places in Photos
- Home screen wallpaper
- Gift Apps
- Spell Check
- iPod Out

I'm gonna launch mail, this has a URL -- so I jump to safari -- so I want to go back to mail... I double click the home button and a window raises that shows me all the apps that are running." Like a dock you can call up -- smart!

For R+B. You can have over 2600 apps, up from the original 180. :p

Third update is Mail. Now can have unified mailboxes. So GMail, Yahoo, etc

Unified Inbox
Multiple Exchange
Fast inbox switching
Sort by Thread
Open Attachments with an app

iBooks is 4th. Nothing big there really

5th is Enterprise. Big updates for security, and all the good stuff for companies. New APIs and such

#6 is Game Centre. Sounds good

This is good

we’ve added a social gaming network. We do automatic matchmaking, we’ll find others with a similar ability and match them against you. You can see how you’re progressing in a game with achievements.” Wow, so Apple just totally knocked off Xbox Live (and PSN) in the iPhone.

7th update is the iAd thing. Apple hosts ads. Ads keep you in the app. 60% of ad revenue goes straight to the developer.

All done with HTML5 :p to Flash

This is some crazy next-gen ads. Games, maps, high res videos all inside apps. OS utilisation. You can shake the iPhone and it changes things.

iPad gets this in Fall (sooo August/September). Probably a month after iPhone 4

And this is only for iTouch 3Gen and iPhone 3GS. So no 2nd Gen iTouch or 3G iPhone.

*@#& you Apple!

I am pretty sure the 3G gets the update. It just wont include multitask as the 3G doesn't have enough memory to be able to do it.

Yep, you are correct.

3G owners get the update but with a far reduced feature set due to the superior processing power of the 3GS.

sblack do you have any idea from the stuff you have read when iPhone 4 is supposed to be released. I read that entire engadget live feed but nothing is mentioned about the actual new phone.

yep, absolutely no mention of iPhone 4g. OS4.0 coming summer, ie July, which is also the usual release of the iPhone, so i am expecting a dual launch, like 3G and 3.0.

Yeah really hoping there is a dual launch because don't think I can sit around using my old usless 3G when there is an update floating around containing multitasking :)

I will be in a position to easily upgrade at this stage so hoping to hear a few details being revealed shortly. Think I am right in saying that the 3GS was launched only about a month after it was revealed. So not hearing anything yet is not a big deal.

I don't see why they would do a massive showcase, and then ship an OS for a year old model. Kind of pointless.

Definitely pointing towards a June iPhone showcase, with a July double release.

Plus the news of the 3G slowly becoming obsolete will attract those 3G users coming off their 2 year contracts to get the new iPhone.

Yeah I guess they would definitely want the new one at least close to a release so those people wanting a new phone after 2 years don't decide to try HTC or Motorola.

I have kept a decent eye on other phones around at the moment but don't think that anything has come close to the iPhone. Especially if some of the rumours floating around about possible specs are true.

If the Nexus One, for example, would have an App Store with the depth of the App Store, then I could see myself moving.

I looked into it for a couple of weeks, when my 3G broke, but decided to wait for iPhone 4.

pretty average update if you ask me - still no widget style home screen

come time for me to shop for a phone i think i'll be looking at android OS - hopefully they have a phone with a decent media player by then.
