Re: iphone - new model?

Yep, I'm yet to have a problem. It would be nice if you could turn off Edge/Roaming but leave 3G on so you don't have to pay for the data when you go outside the 3G zone.

Hmm, I seem to have battery troubles since upgrading to iOS4 on my 32gb Gen 3 iPod Touch.

When I leave apps "on" in the multitasking bar and I turn the iPod off the battery seems to be used up way more than before I updated.

Two nights ago I had 50 percent batter, went to sleep and when I woke up I only had 20 percent!

I proceeded to check my multitasking bar and I had some apps in it.

Last night I made sure to clear my multitasking bar before I went to sleep. My battery pretty much stayed the same.

This is so annoying! Now everytime I am finished with my iPod I have to enter the Multitasking bar and delete all apps from it.

Does anyone else have this problem???

EDIT: Have been reading some stuff that other users have written on the internet and the message that is coming out is pretty uniform. Battery life has generally decreased and one of the main reasons is Persistent Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is now on even if you turn your device off! Will try with Wi-Fi off tonight and see what happens.

I'm a little confused by the options to toggle 3G and Cellular Data. If I turn off Cellular Data, according to the Apple FAQ, I can still make and receive calls and text messages. Therefore, assuming I have Cellular Data turned off, what difference does it make if I also toggle off 3G?

This is what I understand

Enable 3G - OFF
Cellular Data - OFF

No internet connection possible. Can make/receive calls/SMS as usual, but not MMS.

Enable 3G - ON
Cellular Data - OFF

Same as above, the ON setting for 3G is redundant in this instance as Cellular Data is OFF.

Enable 3G - OFF
Cellular Data - ON

Can connect to the internet, but only using EDGE/GPRS, no 3G connections. MMS now available.

Enable 3G - ON
Cellular Data - ON

Internet available via 3G/EDGE/GPRS.

This is a great review of the iPhone 4 by Jason Chen of Gizmodo ..... fame?

It has design flaws, supposedly shatters easier, occasionally comes with yellow patches..... but geez I want one. Call me a fanboy but I just really want to get my hands on this phone.

Hurry up Australian telcos and leak some info!

I found this realy funny :D.

A friend of mine put multitasking on his 3G and it lagged so hard that it sometimes took up to 30 seconds to scroll to a different page of apps. Probably a good idea they didn't include it in the official version haha.

As much as this video teases me and my last post I still thought it was hilarious.

"I need the one with more GB's" :D

According to this link

http://au.gear.ign.com/dor/objects/...r_iphone_062910.html;jsessionid=ai7pcg346hct7

the iPhone 4 is not that much of an upgrade in terms of the processor.

I haven't heard any word of a new iPod though. I'm alright with that though, that means my 32gb Gen 3 is still the newest model! :D

So overall, you guys think the iPhone 4 is an improvement and will be wirth it?

If I had an iPhone 3G, I probably wouldn't have upgraded to iOS 4 and would be looking to get the iPhone 4. I have a 3GS and might persist with it for another 12 months and see out my contract.

Going off the early reviews... IMO... definitely yes.

If you can hold out for 12 months then that might be a good move as Apple will iron out any bugs by then like they did with the iPhone -> iPhone 3GS.

But once it is released it will quite easily be ahead of the pack (and I am not sure how long it will take rivals to catch up).

THE BAD
1st... RE: the bad press with the Antenna issue and drop-outs
a) it is on AT&T network which has always had issues in the US (original iPhone was nortorious for call drop-outs on AT&T's network).
b) the issue is a bit user/environment dependent. More of an issue when the network connection is weak. Apparently caused when the user's skin touches the black seperator, and forms a bridge that connects the 2 different network antenna's. Different skin types form stronger/weaker bridges that disrupt the antenna's effectiveness etc.
c) Jobs is right in saying those effected should either: not hold it there, or buy a cover (a cover prevents contact (by the conductive skin) forming a bridge).

2nd... glass front/back being breakable.
a) iPhone 3's were exactly shock proof either... any drops with descent force end with a cracked screen or cover.
b) most people will buy covers anyway to protect them.
c) unless you're a tradie (buy one of those heavy protected devices) just be careful... it is no more fragile then any other smartphone IMO.

THE GOOD
1) New processor... not hugely noticable in terms of speed... but the other features below wouldn't work with out it.
2) Retina display... that new display is just crazy. Had a meeting with an Apple Aust's System Engineer last week and he made a point that hadn't dawned on me before... the Retina's DPI level is higher then my PC monitor. In terms of detail and quality nothing matches it. Records and plays HD video... sweet.
3) Camera/Smarts... ok the 5mp camera is nothing extordinary... but the internal smarts that help clean up your snaps are awesome. Making it rather hard to take a 'bad' photo. These smarts help adjust lighting, fitler and stablise the shot... and along with the 5mp help ensure photos are high quality. Same with recording video.
4) Video Calling... a cool feature, but dependent on Wi-Fi networks and users using iPhones. Foundation step to paving the way of the future IMO.
5) Ergonomics... it looks better IMO then any other device. Side buttons are more pronounced so you can feel them easily with your fingers.

There are other features too, but they're the ones that impress me so far.

I swear I read somewhere the DPI is higher than the eye can pick up.
Indeed.

iPhone 4 is ~350 dpi, a human eye can only detect 300dpi.

Apparently it is higher than most computer monitors as well.
