I would have thought with the iPhone 5? Just purely guess work, though.

I checked some dates on wikipedia. iOS 5 should be available a few days before the release of the next iPhone. I have compiled the dates for the official announcement of the last 3 iPhones, the official release of the new OS and finally the public release of each new iPhone. My guess is the next iPhone will be out on Friday October 14.

Start a new job in October and will be given a Iphone so I've finally joined the dark side.

For a Iphone noob what apps would you recommend?

Probably not a whole lot of diff between iPhone 4 and the new iPhone, but still, it would suck if you got an iPhone 4 if the new one was out.

I'm sure you can figure out the usual apps to get: Facebook, DropBox, Twitter, Google+, games, etc, but these are some apps that I mainly use:

My job is Oct 3, guessing I'll get a iphone4. Hell might even get a hand me down 3.

Surely Apple's invite suggests that there will be just one new iPhone announced next week? That's what I take the 1 on the Phone to signify. And coincidence that the event is on the 4th? Does that mean it's an iPhone 4S rather than an iPhone 5?

Kind of expected that Apple's new iPhone would not be overly impressive.

At least iOS5 will be a free upgrade. But who cares about this stupid Siri voice assistant? And I couldn't care less about an 8MP camera. I know a lot of people like to compare phones by saying my camera is better than yours, but I couldn't give a flying ****. At least they have a 64GB version, but still a 3.5" screen. That's shit. The combined GSM and CDMA is impressive, but probably doesn't mean much to most people.

It's an incremental upgrade. Not a new phone. Yes, if you already have a 4 it's probably not worth it but those of us still with a 3G/S it's a very good upgrade. Ridiculous overreaction R+B.

Not an over-reaction. A 3.5" screen does not cut it these days. Not everyone cares about the camera capabilities. Processor good. Battery life good. 64GB good. Form factor, not so good. Glass back should have been done away with.

There can now be no doubt that the 3/4/5 two-year cycle is better than the 3GS/4s cycle.

Well, i like the way apple do it. It is a bit of an overreaction. The iPhone 4 came out like a year ago, as if you'd want a new super dooper upgrade a year after you got a new phone? This way it doesn't really matter if you wait out the usual 2 year contract, then you can get a real upgrade and not have to fork out the 800 bucks coz the new one is so much better only a year after.

And what is wrong with the screen? Quality over quantity, thanks, the iPhone is about as big as i'd want a phone to be, sure it'd be nice for the screen to go to the edge but who gives a fat rats crack over an extra couple of mm?

All depends there, some probably couldn't care about a new formfactor. I think looking at some of the demos of Siri, it's very, very impressive, a lot of voice activation features are a little hit and miss, but it seems like this has a lot of Apple polish on it.

Of course there wasn't going to be a 5 yet, US iPhone's are sold with a 2-year contract. The 4S is essentially an upgrade aimed at 3GS owners who would be coming off contract during 2011. There's no point in releasing a whole new phone when iPhone 4 owners are (at most) just past halfway in their contracts.

The way some people are carrying on (not here) is ridiculous. Only minor upgrades over the iPhone 4? Pretty simple, if you don't want those minor upgrades, don't buy it?!

(full disclosure: I got an iPhone 4 on release day last year, so I couldn't give two fifths of a **** if they take another year to release an iPhone 5)

I have to agree with R&B, Apple had their chance to seriously slow Samsungs huge impact but decided not to....

Haha, Apple's stocks fell 2.7% or $10, it's not just an overreaction. When the hype was building up to the announcement of the iPhone 5, and Apple knew that, they were idiots to let that continue and then disappoint everyone with this announcement.

Especially with Samsung and Google announcing the Nexus Prime next week. That'll steal ALL the hype and (hopefully) deservedly so.
