You only get 200mb of data on the $49 cap at Telstra? What a rip! No amount of coverage is worth it.

Christ their data plans are shit. I'm sticking with the remaining 12 months of my Three Mobile contract on the iPhone 3GS. Hopefully Telstra do better for the iPhone 5.

$49 cap on 3 (can't change due to convincing girlfriend to come to 3 a couple of months ago, on a 2 year contract...), unlimited free 3 to 3 and Voda, $450 calls and text, 1.5gb of data, $5/month for the handset, yes please.

Currently with Telstra with the 3G. Looking at all these plans, it's a toss up between Optus' $59 cap and Vodafone's $49 cap (which will cost $59 due to handset repayments since I want the 32GB one). What's Vodafones network like? I've never used them.

Massive thumbs down for Optus, I live in Hoppers Crossing and the coverage is absolutely shit. Constant dropouts, calls taking three times longer than normal because I have to repeat everything twice, lots of missed calls, and when I *do* have to make an urgent call or SMS I've got the dreaded "no service"... This is on a 3GS.

Telstra

I have started looking at smartphone options. I'm currently with 3 and with the starter 'mobile internet' pack of 50mb I currently pay $54 each month. My contract is up in February and then I'll be looking to sign another with somebody and get another free handset.

I've done some looking around and would prefer a HTC Desire over the iPhone but the key factors for me are handset cost and data inclusion. The optus plan with 2GB looks good and if I could get something like that with the HTC I'd go for it but there doesn't seem to be the same value in plans for Android phones so I'll likely get an iPhone 4 16GB from Optus.

whats the go with 3 and vodaphones "included monthly data" and "bonus monthly data"... i've read the fine print but dont really understand whats going on here... for instance on the $49 cap its 500mb included and 1gb bonus... am i just getting 1.5gb data each month or am i missing something

Yes, you would be getting 1.5GB each month.

According to whirlpool, the bonus only applies if you buy a iPhone with them instead of bringing your own.

thanks guys

i'm on 3 already on $49 cap with nokia 95, 24 month contract finished 2 weeks ago but thought i'd wait to see the iphone4 deal then decide what to do.

i think ill get 16gb iphone4 $49 cap + $5per month handset.. so $54 a month... who would recommend $9.99 a month insurance as well?.. i haven't any severe damage to my n95 after 24 months nor my phones before that, but ive seen a lot of smashed iphones which concerns me .. thoughts?

So what's the best bet to getting one early? Lining up on the day? Will they sell out quickly?

I'd be surprised if they sold out totally Friday morning, wouldn't be surprised if you could find them on Saturday or Sunday for sale.

Where can I buy it outright, and how much?

Apple stores and online - 859 for 16gb and 999 for the 32gb.

For those like me that have their home phone with Telstra plus Bigpond and Foxtel, ask them to do a deal for you - got myself a nice deal.

What if you've still got about 6 months left on your contract? Could you expect some kind of deal there? We have about 5 other mobiles, home phone, bigpond and foxtel with them too.

Possibly yes, I think they can waive the leaving fee providing you pick up the iPhone 4 but i'm not 100% certain on that.

I'd suggest you give your local T-Life a call tomorrow and discuss what they can do for you.

Having an iPhone (or any smartphone) on any network but Telstra is just stupid IMO. It's the equivalent of buying a Ferrari, then driving it down a street with speed bumps and a 20km speed limit. It’s not using the thing like it’s designed to be used.
3 ends up costing you more because their coverage is so poor that you wind up roaming half the time and getting charged extra to do so.
Optus’ network is so congested from signing up heaps of people on cheap iPhone plans, but not actually upgrading their network at all to cope with it. It’s at the stage now where Telstras Next G network is nearly 20 times faster than its closest competitor in Australia (Vodafone). If you really want to save money, go with Vodafone. Their download speeds are at least decent. Otherwise go with Telstra. Optus and 3 are useless at the moment.

I'll be buying the iPhone 4 outright from Apple, then using it on my current Telstra business plan. Sell my 3GS on ebay to recoup some dosh in the process ;)

put together a quick summary (if the pic below is too small, open here)

iphone4ll.jpg

NB: Telstra charge the handset repayment in full up front. The other telcos charge monthly instalments. About half of Three's call/text allowance is onlt to VHA, the rest to anyone.

But you really need to check the fineprint on each. Telstra charge calls per 30 seconds, Voda and Three now charge per minute. You make a 10-15 second call, you get charged a minute. That's BS. Not sure about Optus billing. Check call rates and flagfalls etc.

Make no mistake, the Telstra plans are absolute S-H-I-T, but given the speed and coverage, many of us will be tempted to pay way way more than what is a fair price. All telcos bar Telstra offer 2-3 plans below $79. All telcos bar Telstra offer more than 500M on even their cheapest plans. Want more an 500M on Telstra? Go on the $129 plan . I think a fair Telstra plan would be a $59 cap with $500 calls, 500M data, $99 for the 16GB and $199 for the 32GB.

I have a 3GS with Three and get 250M of data on a $49 plan. I pay an extra $6 per month for an extra 500M. This is from 12 months ago. Telstra refuse to even be in the ballpark of being competitive. Telstra data packs are laughable. $5 per month for 30M! Please! $20 per month for 500M, what I'm currently getting on Three for $6. And $40 for 1GB? That's not much of a bulk saving from $20 for 500M! On Three, a 1GB pack is $10. You should be able to get 500M on a relatively cheap iPhone plan. 200M on the $49 is a joke. In 2010, 200M on any plan on any carrier is a joke.

Out of interest, when in the general public (ie. away from Wi-Fi), just what exactly are you needing to download at a billion miles per hour?

A question..
If I get a iPhone 4 on a $49 cap with Voda/3 and 1.5GB of data and I use the internet in a 'roaming' area, does it simply take the data usage out of that 1.5GB at the higher rate or do I get straight out charged extra?

Just to clarify, with Optus it states this:
"UNLIMITED
Standard National Calls to Optus:

* Selected Fixed lines
* Mobiles"

I assume this means free calls to other Optus customers??
