Finally got time to use this baby. Had to head off to work right after I got out of the Apple Store.

Screen is ****ing fantastic.

Getting some death grip effects, but only if I block all 3 antenna points and I am inside a little office. But my natural hold when I make a call or anything doesn't effect it.

Pros; 3G and page rendering generally awesome, phone connectivity awesome (did just port from Optus though), screen definition awesome, back up technically flawless (including knowing the last page of Angry Birds!), MacBook Pro like build.

Iffy points; slippery and fingerprints, hard to work out orientation when concealed in pocket...when slippery prone to handling damage can lead to smashed anything, can easily see one (out of 4 or 5) dropped bar on death grip/touch.

When all is said and done, it is closer to my dream of having my first Mac (PowerBook) in my pocket and is pretty damn close. The synching is a wish that is also near flawless. Still worried about ****ing the hardware up physically though.

Agree with you for sure FIGJAM, can get very slippery especially if it's sitting in your pocket and you whip it you quickly, could see it slipping out of my hands and hitting the ground.

Def needing a case.

Speaking of cases, which one will people be choosing for the redemption? Think i'm gonna stick with an Apple Bumper, none of the others really look good to me and would simply wreck the design of it.

I managed to get one the other night - only waited for two hours, but still felt like a douche doing so. I previously had a 3GS, but given my contract was up and I wanted to switch to Telstra, it was a timely decision more than anything else. If I didn't one now, it would probably be weeks until I did, and I've had a gutful with Vodafone's ineptitude.

To be honest, there's not much difference. Sure. Screen is better, the software is a little faster and there are some minor cosmetic changes, but nothing that's going to absolutely blow your mind if you've used a 3GS for an extended period of time.

This is from iLounge

Here's some real world tests from ilounge.

- 3G Web Browsing: Apple promises 6 hours of battery life. Our aggressive web reloading test, with 50% brightness, Wi-Fi turned off, and reloading of a large page every minute ran for 6 hours and 47 minutes.

- Wi-Fi Web Browsing: Apple promises 10 hours of battery life. The same exact test from above using Wi-Fi on a mixed 802.11b/g/n network ran for 8 hours and 35 minutes. Superior performance would be expected if the 3G antenna was turned off, but disabling or limiting iPhone 4’s calling features during web browsing isn’t in our view a real-world test of its performance.

- Video Playback: Apple promises 10 hours of battery life. Our standard two-movie loop ran for 11 hours and 14 minutes on 50% brightness and 50% volume through the headphone port without disabling 3G or Wi-Fi.

- Audio Playback. Apple promises 40 hours of battery life. The iPhone 4 audio test result came in at 52 hours and 45 minutes, handily exceeding Apple’s promised run time—even without the device’s wireless radio hardware turned off to conserve power.

- 3G Talk Time: Apple promises 7 hours of battery life. Our test of an iPhone 4 with 3G and Wi-Fi both on ran for 7 hours and 6 minutes of continuous 3G talk time, doing nothing else in the foreground, while an iPhone 4 with Wi-Fi off ran for 7 hours and 22 minutes of continuous 3G talk time.

- FaceTime: Apple makes no assurances as to the run time for this feature. In our tests, FaceTime ran over Wi-Fi continuously for 3 hours and 10 minutes. Two separate iPhone 4 units showed battery loss of 30% per hour on mixed 802.11b/g/n networks.

- 720p Video Recording: Apple makes no assurances as to the run time for this feature. Our 720p video recording session ran continuously for 3 hours and 3 minutes, though recording had to be restarted every 50 minutes as the camera is not designed to create video files longer than that.

It allows full access to the phone. Meaning you can do whatever, and put whatever you want on it.

The main uses are apps that don't make the App Store, which can be found in the underground App Store called Cydia.

Can install any app from the AppStore for free using

Full customisable themes which change icons and the UI of native apps like iPod

So I've never been an apply fan but I've just started a new job and had the choice of any being provided with any phone so I went for the i4. I have to say I’m not too impressed so far. Simple stuff like transferring all my contacts from my old Sony Ericsson phone to the iphone has been a nightmare. Usually when I get a new phone I’m able to transfer all the contacts from my old phone via Bluetooth with all the details preserved. Not possible to transfer with iphone it seems. Friggin weird bluetooth support, will pair with a head set and PC, but not another bluetooth phone or device :(
Anyone got a fix for this without having to go through the mind numbingly tedious task of transferring my contacts manually?

Can you sync to Outlook or Google from the Sony?

Also check with Apple Stores. When I was in there, they mentioned they had a device that would transfer all contacts from my Nokia. They could have something for Sony's.

2nd or 3rd on the waiting list at JB Hifi at Marion. Hopefully should have some stock before the end of the week. Looking forward to giving my old slow 3G the flick. Was playing around with an i4 the other day in a shop and it just seems so much better!

According to the Whirlpool people some stores have lineups this morning ready for the next lot to be realeased. Hopefully this is good news for the people on lists.

Yeah I've gone straight from 3G to i4 so never experienced the speed boost of the 3GS.

I am absolutely blown away by the performance boost in my 4. I turned my old 3G back on just before for a laugh and it felt so painfully slow and looked like shit.

But it voids your warranty so you have to be careful.
actually, i wouldn't be so sure about that now, since it's been ruled that jailbreaking a phone is now perfectly legal

this jailbreak is rumoured to be partially completed by the apple dev team
