This is what I understand

Enable 3G - OFF
Cellular Data - OFF

No internet connection possible. Can make/receive calls/SMS as usual, but not MMS.

Enable 3G - ON
Cellular Data - OFF

Same as above, the ON setting for 3G is redundant in this instance as Cellular Data is OFF.

Enable 3G - OFF
Cellular Data - ON

Can connect to the internet, but only using EDGE/GPRS, no 3G connections. MMS now available.

Enable 3G - ON
Cellular Data - ON

Internet available via 3G/EDGE/GPRS.
The Cellular Data needs to be so you can leave 3G on, but have Roaming, Edge etc. off. This would mean you wouldn't be charged for surfing the net when you enter roaming.

Just found out the iPhone keyboard does not have the reverse quote, also known as a grave accent or back tick. When you press and hold the single quote button, it shows three different quotes. They are merely different ways to show a single quote, the first one looks like a reverse quote but it actually isn't.

Need help here.

Yesterday went to make a call and my phone froze. Tried to reset it, and it ended up completely shitting itself and resetting over and over and over. So restored it through iTunes.

It restored to 3.1.3 and now it isn't activated anymore. Usually i just jailbreak to activate it cause it's locked to telstra, but that Spirit jailbreak needs to the iPhone to already be activated?? :(

Any tips???

Whilst I am enjoying the many and varied apps on the thing, this is the worst phone I've ever owned. I've had it exactly 3 months and this is the third time it is going back to fix it after it froze. Hopefully this time they just give me a new one.

Now I have to make do with my old phone, which while it may not have all the whizz bang features of the iPhone......AT LEAST IT ****ING WORKS!

Sorry for your bad experience, seems like you got a lemon.

If you can get it exchanged with a refurb, hopefully that's the end of your problems.

An iPhone is not the bees knees but it sure craps on anything running Windows Mobile.

Hey, I hear it's the luck of the draw. I thought with the new 3GS ones it would be better but, whatever.

Do you know if they have a problem coping with the cold? I just mean I sometimes have it in my pocket when I'm riding my motorbike to work on cold mornings. Could this be affecting it adversely?

I recently got an iphone on ebay from the states... It is advertised as unlocked and when i put my current sim in it doesn't say that it doesn't recognise it or anything.. But it says no service... any idea how to set this up so that it works for me? Does it mean its not unlocked, do i have the wrong sim? its is an iphone 3g, and on my old phone there was always the 3g under the signal strength so I assumed that i had a 3g sim?

Have you plugged it into your computer and run the itunes startup process?

If you have, all I can say is that it sounds like when my sim was disconnected after I came back from OS. Does your SIM work in another phone?

I have trying to sort it out for about 7 hours now!! its doing my head in!!

I plugged it into the computer and it told me my itunes needed to be a different version, so i removed the old one, put the new one on.. and when i plugged in the iphone i got a message about the sim not being supported....

Yeah it does work in other phones.. I have taken it out of my current phone which I have never had an issue with..
I am thinking that it is not unlocked as was meant to be...

I have stuffed up my iPhone 3GS big time. I jailbroke it about 3 weeks ago with Spirit. Went to update it at my mates house last Friday and it stopped halfway and didn't go further. I tried everything to fix it and then I found out about this SHSH stuff. I DIDNT save it. Do you think that 3 or Apple will repair or give me a new one?

Yeah unfortunately I think you're right. Locked iPhones will only work with the SIM which it was originally setup with. Being from the US it is with the telco AT&T. What you need to do is find someone with a spare AT&T SIM or alternatively buy one off eBay for around $10 or so. Once you get it here chuck it in the phone, run the startup process and then do your research on Jailbreaking and Unlocking from that carrier.

You probably don't know off the top of your head but there are 2 versions of 3GS, one that you will have no problems in Unlocking and the other which is yet to be cracked. I only have 3G so don't know alot of the finer details of the later model iPhone.

Sorry for your trouble, hope this helps.

I think you have "bricked" it. Give these simple instructions a go. Hopefully it works. I luckily haven't had this happen to me yet.

  1. Plug your iphone into the computer
  2. Then reset the iphone by holding the home and power button at the same time
  3. Keep holding them down until you see the reboot screen, but do not let go as yet
  4. Keep holding it down until the next thing you see is the restore screen where you’ll see the iTunes logo and the USB cable on your iphone screen
  5. And at that point you’ll be connected to your iTunes and restore to your last backup

Seems a little simple but give it a go anyway.

*EDIT - How the hell do I get rid of that tipping thing in the side bar? I haven't even entered tips all year??

How do you restore to a backup? I simply do not know how

You're doing pretty well for not putting in a tip all year tbh

I got it fixed! I just took it into the 3 store and they took and restored it and viola. But this 3 person working thought that this guys phone was jailbroken because it had a background screen. But it was OS.4:D. I had to LOL at that

Australian release of iPhone 4 will be July 30. I think the free bumpers (Apple produced cases) are available until September. I don't think the reception issue will be a problem for anyone that uses some kind of a case or cover, as the majority of us probably do. My guess is there will be a new batch of phones later in the year that will provide a hardware fix for the problem, or that will be resolved with iPhone 5 next year.
