Some mates in my department have an iPhone 4 and we were playing around with FaceTime. Can't quite understand when and why it does and doesn't work.

We work in a basement, only Telstra and Optus get reception, and we have wifi

A - Voda, no phone reception
B - Virgin (roams to Optus), has phone reception
C - Telstra, has phone reception

Both A and B could make a Facetime call to C, C could not call either A or B, and A and B could not call each other.

So does Facetime work as long as the caller has wifi and the receiver has 3G (or wifi and 3G)?

If it was their first time using FaceTime, then it needs reception to associate the iPhone to the FT servers. After that, everything is pure data, so wifi only would work.

Argh! It's been, what, 2 months since the release date and i've still had no success in getting an iPhone 4 through Optus.

Their raincheck/ordering system is absolute shite! Don't get me wrong, I don't mind waiting and realise their level of supply isn't meeting the consumers demand, but when they say outright that they won't be taking any more orders until they've recieved more stock is a joke in itself. Surely they would've recieved stock by now and fulfilled those orders that were placed 2 friggin' months ago!

So, so frustrated, and am just about ready to throw in the towel with Optus. I just want to place an order and get in the queue, as i'm not going to have an opportunity to get my hands on one until they actually allow me to place my order.

I'm currently a pre-paid customer with them, but want to go onto a plan with the iPhone 4, so i'm practically a 'new' customer to them, which gives them more incentive to try and sign me up and yet they would rather turn me away. Strange.

Any ideas around this? :(

Check the Whirlpool iPhone forum. There are specific threads on each carriers Stock/Raincheck status.

Will be able to get lots of help there.

If you live in Melbourne, go to Highpoint Shopping Centre and go to the JB Hi-Fi there and they have a telstra store inside. I got my iPhone 4 in 4 days. But if you want to stay with optus, just bear with them and it should come very soon since you've waited 8 weeks.

FaceTime is wifi only unless the iPhones are jailbroken. However the first time FaceTime is used, it needs to be initiated with a phone call first. After that, you don't need the cellular connection, and can initiate FaceTime calls through contacts and going FaceTime.

Also, Virgin doesn't roam on the Optus network. It always uses the Optus network.

Downloaded this last night. Can't wait to get stuck into it. Wish they had some nice Retina display graphics however.

I got addicted to Fruit Ninja this week. Can't for the life of me work out how these people have scores in the 300 for zen mode. I have a decent 200+ score but that is about my limit.

SUCCESS!!! :D

After what seemed to be another failed attempt at getting an iPhone 4 today, I had a breakthrough at the last moment. From utter failure came success in the matter of minutes!

Firstly, I tried to get a 16gb black iPod at the Strathfield store at my uni today after I saw a guy walk out of there holding one. But upon enquiring I was told the girl that was already at the counter had just bought the last one! The attendant told me to try the Optus store at Northland as they got more stock in today.

But when I got there they gave me the usual story that they were out of stock, but were now taking orders, and that I could get an iPhone 4 within 3 weeks or so. Just as I was about to agree on placing an order I remembered some bloke on the Whirlpool forums mentioned that he got his 16gb one at the Harvey Norman store in Highpoint.

So I thought i'd try my luck with them by giving them a call, and to my surprise they said they had ONE 16gb black iPhone in stock. So I rushed over there and was almost out of luck when I was told the two guys seated at the computer nearby had just bought the last remaining iPhones. I felt dejected that I drove all that way only to be turned away, but just as I sat down to place an order, one of the other salesmen comes over and says that one of the guys has changed his mind and doesn't want to buy the 16gb iPhone.

It was at this point that I felt the urge to fist pump with excitement, and they signed me up on the spot. Very, very lucky!

I also recieved a handy $150 Harvey Norman giftcard! Apparently they've changed the value from $200 to $150, but I don't care because i'm just wrapt I finally had some success in getting my hands on an iPhone 4.

Booyah! :thumbsu: :D

Anyone else had the alarm problem as a result of daylight savings? You set your phone to 7am, but instead it'll go off at 6am. Didn't realise for a couple of days, but was surprised I didn't over sleep. It didn't go off on Sunday when I had to go to work, so that was annoying. Pretty simple to fix, but it's pretty annoying.

I know my alarm didn't go off on the morning of work but haven't had the hour early issue. I usually set 5-7 alarms to make sure that I do wake up but not one of them went off. Apparently, Apple know about the issue and the fix will be in the next update, most likely in November.

How early do you wake up? I only do the 10 alarm thing if I'm waking up really early or to watch sport.

Just went to get an iPhone 4 from Forest Hill Chase Telstra, everthings ok, $49 cap ect, existing Telstra customer, go to the system, oh but you current phone is on Pre-Paid, we can't change that to an Post-Paid, would you be ok with a new number? I say no i want to keep my number, tell them that it only got changed to a Pre-Paid a month or 2 ago and that was done in a Telstra/T[life] Store, They go oh well we can't do that, maybe they can at a bigger store (i did the original change at Frankston and they had no issues and they all use the same computer system), do you have time to phone Telstra? I say no and leave.

How come they can easily change from Post-Paid to Pre-Paid but not the reverse?

The original transaction over a month ago was having the phone transfered into my name and then transferred over to Pre-Paid from a $10 Casual Post-Paid that they had to setup to enable the transfer of ownership. They first store had no problems in doing this.
