Looking to jailbreal my iPhone 3GS 4.2.1. Had a couple of bad experiences before with both times trying to restore back but not working (didnt understand whole SHSH stuff)

Got a new I4 on the weekend (old one broke, cbf waiting for I5), and came across a very strange situation. As I was putting the numbers in, and attempting to use them, I realised text messages sent from my phone weren't received from one of my mates, but only one. We have literally stood in the same room, called each other no problems, she's messaged me no problems, but then when I go to reply, or send a new message, nothing. I ask partly because I want to know how that can be fixed, but also how I can make it happen for other people instead? Haha.
So I authorized my phone on another computer but it still says it wants to delete all my library. What I do?
Latest reports are that production won't even start until September with a release date pre- or post- Christmas.

You need to set it to manually manage your music; but you can't load up tunes from another PC onto it..
Yeah I wanted to get music from that computer (he has 30,000 songs on his hard drive). I clicked manually manage and it wanted to delete my library. Weird thing was I could put music on my iPod fine but not on my iPhone.

Put all of his tunes on an external HDD, copy to your computer, then over to your IPhone.

My partner is looking at getting a new phone in the next few days, she originally had her heart set on an iphone 4 but after talking to Optus they are pushing her towards the Samsung Galaxy. Apparently better than iphone.
What are your thoughts between the two? I have an iphone 3GS and havent had any problems so far (even after jailbreaking). I just don't know anything about the Samsung.

App Store is the only thing that matters for mine; the Galaxy might be a better phone (I know a few people with them and they're happy with them), but the IPhone is just so well supported.
I'd wait until at least June 5th though, see if Apple give anything away about IPhone5, which shouldn't be too far away.

my friend recently got the Galaxy, said its a good phone but would have preferred an iPhone, he just said the Galaxy was "a bit boring"... whatever that means?

You need to give the phone permission to do this with Google otherwise it doesn't record anything.
Anyway, I'm looking at getting one of these for my wife. iPhone5 seems too far away so will get the 4 now. Are things like Apple Care ($99) needed or a complete luxury?
She isn't very good with computers and I have no time to help her if that makes a diff for the above question.

I think you can do a 'training' session at an Apple Store, which is probably worthwhile for her - but you will need to spend a bit of time with her sorting ITunes and stuff.
