iPod not showing up in iTunes

anyone had this problem?

My friends iPod won't show up in iTunes to add new songs onto.

It appears in My Computer and it can be opened as a hard drive but iTunes wont recognise it?

I have tried to download the new iTunes and do a reset on the iPod but no luck.

Would it be a firmware problem? if so how can i update the firmware without itunes?

tried unplugged the USB cable and plugging it back in? works for my iPod Touch

no luck

Tried to update, said the driver was up to date.

uninstalled it, scanned for hardware changes, it reinstalled the driver but still wont work.

Reset the iPod but I would think you'd have already tried that.
Also if it's a Touch is it jailbroken because I hear that creates problems.

Yeah was the first thing i tried.

The iPod is a 3rd Gen Nano if it makes a difference
