Caught a horror of a decision against Stirling there. Been a good morning for Ireland otherwise with a steady erosion of the deficit.

Ireland all out 288, leaving Afghanistan 147 to win. It would have been much less but for a last wicket stand of 58, the second time in the match for Ireland.

According to cricinfo, it's only the second time in Test history that one side's last wicket has put on 50+ in each innings of the match. This is the other, 124 years ago:

In fairness, Albert Trott had a FC average of 20 and posted 8 tons.

Great fight there by the Irish batsmen and must in particular be thankful for Murtagh and Dockrell again. Shame about two or three really poor decisions that hindered their ability to put in a decent lead. While balance of probability would have the Afghans pretty confident, the opportunity to make history with a maiden test victory could weigh on the minds if early wickets were lost in the morning. For all the bad about cricket administration, the reality that we can see these two sides continue to grow their rivalry in the test arena is a massive positive for cricket fans in general.

Good take, has the potential to become a very good Test batsman - doesn't feel fussed about blocking 20 balls in a row if he needs, and has a good variety of shots. And he's just scored another half century.

Would be interested to see how Afghanistan would go in a proper 3 test series against someone like Sri Lanka or Bangladesh as i feel they are above the Zimbabwe/Ireland level. A shame it won't it be happening for a while as they only really get 1 test match here and there in the FTP.

To be fair to Ireland, Bangladesh and - if you removed the sudden fast bowling improvement from the SA series - Sri Lanka as well, would probably be an even match for the men in green on their home soil.
