I have the utmost respect and admiration for Irene. She was an ordinary supporter who became an extraordinary hero to all of us who thought our club was doomed.
I was lucky enough to be at the Western Oval that day, having driven from Perth to get to the Grand Final that year. I had planned on returning to Melbourne to live in 1990 after a very long year living in Perth and could not imagine not having the Bulldogs to follow. I keep the receipt for the $200 I donated in my wallet to remind me of that day and how much the club has meant to me. I really should take it out and have it framed like some have done, but I'm sure I'd lose my wallet the next day. Not that I'm superstitious or anything.
