Wireless headset and I check my watch for my heart rate. But for those 45s to 1 minute I like to relax and focus on the next set. Mentally relaxing is imo just as important as the physical rest between sets.

Also I dont see many patrons being strict with their rest periods, a phone usually leads them spending far too long resting between sets.

I record all my notes of each workout, while I have my protein shake after the workout.
I note down on my phone while I train. My rest is between 1 and 2 minutes tops (3 if I don't feel recovered am going for a pb or failed the last)
As long as the rest isn't excessive I don't see much of a problem with phones. I'm on mine in the gym right now ;)

As an aside, do you stick strictly to that 45 seconds for all exercises / rep ranges?

I tend to start heavy and with lower reps, finishing lighter with higher reps - I find the higher reps I lift the less rest break I give myself.

No its not a strict rule, its what I aim for. I do this so I can place metabolic stress on my muscles. With that said I also do go with how my body feels. At the start of a workout, my rest periods can be as short as 30s and it gets stretched out as the workout progresses sometimes upto 90s.

I do give myself a longer break for squats/bench press as I found those to be the most taxing.

Your strategy is good, because by the time you have finished you have exhausted your muscles.

*Caveat, I would be a hypocrite if I said that the occasional chat with a hot girl didnt lead to a longer break between sets. :$:p With that said I usually do this though when I exercise the muscle group the second time during the week, as I try and make it as enjoyable/fun as possible. The first time I hit a muscle group at the start of the week, I am fairly focused though.

Fair enough of course :)

Timing might make a bit of difference too - I workout before work so any extra time I spend in the gym means I get to work later so I tend to just workout, say a quick hello or nod the head to other regulars, no phone or anything else, and leave. Someone working out later with no obligations afterwards may take a bit longer and not have the same time imperative to finish on any sort of schedule.

Interesting. One thing I like about not having the phone is that I like to not only rest my body between sets but also my mind. I find it very healthy mentally to just relax there.

I usually spend my 45s rest break checking out the incorrect form of guys doing weights. With that said I do admire the guys/girls that have great technique when performing exercises.
I do train with just my ipod sometimes and without wireless i can't look up facebook, or read bigfooty i tend to find those workouts are a bit more effective (less rest time/less distractions) But sometimes i will need my work phone to keep on top of emails if i've been out of the office for the day or waiting on responses from clients.

As long as the rest breaks aren't excessive and it's not impacting other gym users I don't really care what others do between sets

I think its unfair thing for me to say, but if a person is in good physical shape, then if they play on their phone, chat to people and basically have a fun time at the gym, then I guess whatever works for them is fine they have obviously done the hard yards in the past to afford to be able to do this.

What "shits" me, is those that have been coming for months, who have yet to make any difference in their physical appearance but yet, fck around the gym you dont have my respect.

You are better off doing an intense 45min session without distractions, then doing a longer session but stuffing around.

I was reading something (can't remember if it was a Facebook post or article) and the person was saying guys shouldn't talk to girls in the gym because it's creepy and girls don't like it. Saw a lot of girls respond with "I don't drink, I don't go clubbing. The gym is my party time, if guys don't talk to me there where am I meant to meet them" always resonated with me haha(since I used to think hitting on people at gym was creepy)

It's hard to look at someone and judge if they're making progress though. Just remember that.

But this thread is about what shits you at the gym! ;)

I dont care what others do per se, the only time I get pissed off, is if someone is smelling ie BO or using equipment I want to use and are either doing the exercise incorrectly (because what is the point of you exercising) or taking forever to get off it because they are fking around.

Gym users should know I do bench press at 5pm sharp every Monday, I should actually photocopy my routine and send this out to everyone at the gym.:$:p

I know ;) was just giving the other side of opinion. I've been trying lately to be less judgey and looking like an angry campaigner in gym since my missus pulled me up on always looking mad at gym haha

I have actually gone out with a few girls from my gym. Nice girls, Im not talking 10/10 gym fit babes, but nevertheless attractive from my point of view. With that said, it helps if you have been going at the same time for months on end and see them week in and week out and got to know them over a period of time. 99% of my conversations with the girls have been just chats then anything remotely related to being hit on. I have had even a few come up to chat to me so it works both ways.

There is a fine line between harassing and chatting though.

When their waist and arse are exploding today compared to months ago, thats a pretty clear sign to me that they are doing a few things wrong.

As I said I do notice what others are doing because I dont surf on my phone so I do pay attention a lot to others and how they are progressing.

Oh I agree, pretty obvious to read signs if they feel uncomfortable, there's a fine line between nice chit chat and hitting on too. I've had to point that out before (a girl was doing squats pretty dangerously with too much weight, I have her a few pointers and she told me she had a boyfriend. I'm in an LTR so her assumption was way off base)

I've had three girls ask me for coffee at gym this year, have had to politely decline each one.

That's why I said that looks aren't a good way to judge progress. They may have hit a PB on a lift, they may be able to run further or faster or at all, other parts of them may have gotten smaller, they may have a condition that is becoming more manageable due to the last few months of exercise

I knew a guy who used to cop shit for being overweight but in gym every day at ENRG, wasn't looking any different despite being there daily. Turned out he had some sort of cancer, the gym was used to help keeping some aspects of his health in check and was working, and was also an emotional release for him.

Walks off gets water. Stands around staring at people and drinking it. Finishes it. Pulls out bcaas mixes them up goes and gets water. Leaves his gym bag in the middle of the floor and starts training

Just recently joined a new gym for the couple months I'm off uni and made a few notes, not on the people who seemed fairly normal but the gym itself annoyed me.

- Music is way too loud, I don't know anyone there so not looking to chat anyway but I doubt I could hold a conversation very well above the noise level
- Drink fountains only have the spout to fill a water bottle, can't just grab a sip between sets
- Almost no practical empty floor space, makes deadlifts pretty hard to do with other people around because the one place you can use you'd be blocking off access to some other equipment
- No rowers, but 8 bikes. More of a personal preference thing but was disappointed to be restricted to treadmill or exercise bike
- Weight plates are everywhere, and there is no central location to put them. If you're chasing a 5kg you have to go and look on the sides of every piece of equipment until you find one

I've said it before, but I absolutely hate this with a passion about gyms. And it's always some repetitive shitty dance mix as well, at a volume louder than you'd hear in a club, at any time of the day or night.

I wouldn't really care what they played, if it wasn't up so damn loud. Gives you no opportunity to listen to your own music, or just use a gym session to release tension and unwind, because it feels like you're being pressured and having your head caved in by this constant inescapable beat.

There could be other reasons as people have said, but some people just have no clue or care about the role diet plays, or just continue to eat poor or think they have a "license" to do so because they "work it off in the gym".

Honestly, I'd feel a bit creepy and like I'm interfering with their workout and life if I just randomly started chatting to some girl in the gym. I'd still feel like their reaction would be "Yeah, I'm not here for that". It just feels so obvious, and kind of predatory. If it goes badly as well, you'd feel weird about going back and possibly running into them again. You don't want to be "that guy" or have a reputation, getting weird looks or having a complaint made about you to management, especially if they're a regular who has friends there. I don't really feel like I'm looking or feeling my best in sweaty gym gear, either.

I guess some people just have the confidence and aren't that self-conscious that they can pull it off, but I'd want some sort of sign of interest (even just a look or casual "hello" or smile) from them before I'd do it I'd say.

I don't talk to them either way. Because I don't want to cop a backhand from the missus haha
