Who's this Ablett chap people keep raving on about?![]()
and who is jack?
I'm not sure "traitor" is the right word to use, because it implies that Ablett disseminated information to, say, Collingwood before leaving that resulted in Geelong losing the prelim. Of course this isn't true, they just gave the scoreboard a walloping sufficient to make the result beyond doubt very early.
I think Ablett is more guilty of subterfuge and deceit. Anyone remember that article early last year where Ablett was quoted as being "90% likely" to stay at Geelong? I wish I could find it online.
The discussion about Ablett is becoming circular.
As has been said ad infinitum, we might disagree with his decision but lots of us can understand why he put cash over loyalty if his priorities are that way – as they clearly are. However, the duplicitous way he extricated himself from the club was disrespectful to the club and to his team mates.
He’ll earn every cent he’s paid as the only marquee player being paid a fortune. Without superstars all around him he’ll be the singular target every week. A few ordinary games early and the press will be all over him.
However, time to move on as the topic has been done to death. Can’t wait for next Sunday.
Its a bit silly asking a die-hard Geelong supporter whether Ablett leaving was traitorous. Of course it was. But I am biased. I am loyal to the Cats and could never support any other club. I expect loyalty from the players in return.
The reality is, as Tony Abott recently said, "Shit happens". Dollars are louder than loyalty.
I'll be very happy when Geelong snares a superstar recruit from another club - if that ever happens - and you won't hear me calling that player a traitor.
Agree with all of that. Loyalty is ONLY for supporters. We are the ones bleeding, even his EX teammates have forgiven and condoned what he did and are still his mates, hence the need for that bridge.I have had the distinct pleasure of enjoying 2 generations of Gary Ablett at the Geelong Football Club and without any shadow of doubt can say that i have immensely enjoyed every moment of it.
I would strongly urge any Geelong supporter to not tread down the traitor path and instead enjoy the Abletts for what they were....phenomenal football players who contributed to the best of times of our great club. Gary Jnr is no traitor - he will always love the GFC and i have no doubts that he will one day end up back at the club in some capacity. He is a local boy with strong ties ..... i have no doubt at all that he will one day contribute to our club.
As such, we should not rob ourselves of the good times, it was awesome and delivered everything in spades that we could have possibly hoped for. That will always be part of our great history and that is definitely something to be celebrated. It is only a game, and Gary for whatever reason is entitled to make his own decisions and i for one will still look forward to watching him play and rise to the new challenge of the Gold Coast Footy club.
What i do know is that we are in a brilliant position as a club right now. Ablett has been a large part of that - and even his move to the gold coast will act to sure up our playing reserves for the future.
Who knows...maybe we will even see a 31 year old Gaz playing FF back at the club in 2017....its not like that hasn't been done before!
Kinda like Judd saying he couldn't see himself leaving Claremont (or wherever it was he was living).
Things change I guess even though he and Ablett may have genuinely meant that at the time.
Gazz is a traitor of sorts. I put anyone in that bracket who leaves the team they are at for money or to chase a flag. That said, I totally understand why he did it and don't blame him. The price of this decision is that he gets ridiculed to some degree and deservingly so.

Ablett was totally loyal to us every time he played and those are awesome memories
I think that's what's called gilding the lily. To put it mildly.
All we know on that front is that the admin certainly didn't.
He was but that misses the point entirely.
Let's face it. Nobody is about to change their opinion about the way he handled his departure. Let's move on.
Moving on is exactly the point....however, i would strongly urge everyone to remember all the good the name Gary Ablett has given the GFC. Sure the departure wasn't handled ideally, but in no way does that detract from the services we got from the Ablett name.
Personally i have enjoyed over 20 stunning seasons supporting that name......couldn't imagine a more enthralling journey.
Yes, but it's time to give it a rest.
agree about moving on, but those teammates that we've heard interviewed, headed by Harley, have all said it was an impossible deal to walk away from, they would have done it, good luck to him = condoning.I think that's what's called gilding the lily. To put it mildly.
