With our ageing defense, and Schultz earmarked to be our next CHB, we really need him to come good or risk having a backline lacking in depth when Gasper, Kellaway and Graham are all gone in the next two years.

He turns 20 around the start of the season, so he might not be able to told down CHB for a lot of the year.

Also, take out his Brisbane game this year, and he only had one game (Bulldogs) where he had more than 10 possessions.

He took 6 marks against Freo, and had a few games where he got 4 marks.

Do we expect him to take that big step this year, or are tiger fans willing to give him another year or two to develop.

I also have a slight query over his general fitness, but a proper pre-season could fix that up.

What do we all think?

Someone posted that he didnt look any fitter or bigger at Training.. or maybe that was Ray Hall.

But I dont think he's aggresive enough. Not angry enough.. Like a Joel bowden but without the skills.

id like to see him put on 12 kilos and get a bit of mongrel in him.

Im hoping Terry builds a real angry edge to the Tigers.

I'm not expecting big things from him this year, perhaps next year (2006) we may see a much bigger and more confident Schultz under Wallace

As for 2005 I think our team will continue to struggle to see the year out and I think we will win about 6 games in total.

Will be another tough year for our club.

I reckon we cant afford to have him at CHB the whole year. He'll prob line up on a 3rd tall forward, with either Kellaway or Graham taking the CHB position. If we have him there against Collingwood in the Wiz, he'll prob line up on Rocca. Now I havent seen him in a defensive position much in the past... I remember the Jack Dyer tribute match against the Hawks when he lined up on Nick Holland and got flogged, but he had only 5 or so games under his belt at that time.
IMO I dont think its too late to discount Schulz as a key forward. Dunno wat u guys think tho. I believe the reason we did so well against Brisbane was that Richo didnt play, and the focus was on Schulz and Ottens. If Richo is out of the 50, Schulz will become more prominent as a forward. This is just a thought as TW did have him set for CHB. But he should be eased into the position, rather than him being a Gaspar (without a preseason after a knee reco he was thrown on the 1st key forward almost every week.)
Just my 2 cents

i think he should adapt well to playing chb. play on the slower fowards of the comps eg rocca, J brown, id even give him goes on the likes ov revoltd and tedrea. but at training he has to take it more seriously if he wants to step up. him and staff are two that will be seen mucking around together.... all the time.

Why doesnt Joel Bowden continue to play at CHB? He did a bloody good job when he was put there, he won the fricken best and fairest and they are still thinking about moving him away from the position. If i was Wallace i would leave Bowden at CHB and have Graham at FB with Gaspar and Hall as backups. As far as Schulz goes leave him at CHF. If he aint bulk then he wont be holding down a defensive position..

im pretty sure bowden will still be down back. but he hasnt got the height to compete with the big hf's of the comp... he is good at running the ball out of the backline. i asume that if he plays down back we will see him play on players who are shorter than him therefore he has a better advantage of winning the ball.

You've got a fair point. Its a really tough debate over whether Bowden is more useful in the midfield or at CHB. He played in the midfield a lot before he 'took his medicine' when he went back to coburg in rd 6, and from wat I remember those efforts will never match those of this year at CHB. I think he's good enough to stay there just until Schulz or another youngster can be groomed into the position.
Bowden's first really noticable performance at CHB was against Port Adelaide in rd 9 where he picked up 42 disposals, 11 marks and 2 goals, although I'm not sure who he played on. His second was against Brisbane rd 14 on Jonathon Brown. Brown got the early start, but Bowden won that contest IMO keeping Brown to just one behind, while picking up 24 disposals himself. And another one would be against Sydney in rd 22. Only 16 disposals but kept Barry Hall to 12 disposals and 2 goals, which was one of Barry's most quietest games this year.
And like Tim Lane and Robert Walls discussed in the commentary of the rd 14 game against Brisbane, Bowden playing on a dominant CHF really brings focus to his game. So I reckon play him there for most of next year and after the 22 rounds (and hopefully finals ;) ) assess the situation.
Again, just my 2 cents...

Why do people keep saying this when he towelled up J Brown and kept Hall quiet
They are two of the biggest CHFs in the league, if not the biggest
Sure he is great running it out of defence, but its not like his opponent is left alone to kick a bag

Cornes plays the role in the same way, I hardly see anyone lining up to say he can't do the job
Bowden is 188cm/90kg & C Cornes 191cm/91cm, not a huge difference, only an inch in it

yer id prefer to see someone like scuhltz take up this role... it will free up more space for bowden..... we need players (young ones) to step up and take on roles like this. IMO bowden should not be contesting on somebody who is a decent amount of height taller than him. but if schultz or no body can fill the role and do a decent job then im quite happy for bowden to be there.

Not certain thats a very fair assesment of shulzy...he has a decent amount of mongrel in him...have seen him dish out some fair bumps in his fledgling career to date...needs to learn more about the game...has been used as a nowhere man and needs to find his mark..i would have thought FF however TW has him earmarked for CHB

Just noticing that, there were a couple of times that Schultz layed heavy pumps on opposition player gonig for the ball.

But i must say i would prefer him how he is now compared to the likes of Jonathan Brown in the aggresion/mungrel area.

Thats correct he does need to learn more about the game so playing him at CHB is a great plan so he can learn the game from the best fowards in the comp ie. Barry Hall, Jon Brown and Warren Tredrea
