Is Australia racist?

Why should you hire someone when there are better options?

You just bagged out people over 50 for their inability to use computer programs that have been around since the 1980s. You also missed the bit where computers have been part of Australian businesses since at least the early 1990s.

On the basis that young people are "literally" four times faster than older people at using them.

I'm pretty sure that sort of thing is the definition of Ageism.

You can't assume that, you have to test individual cases.

The most famous Australian computer hacker so far turns 50 next year (if he lives that long?)

I know 50 kg women that work harder and stronger than 95 kg footy players as well. Plenty of those guys are fat and lazy and 10kg overweight but rely on the excess weight to hold their ground in contests. Again individual cases should be assessed on their own merits.

Which is actually the opposite of racism, sexism or ageism.

Whatever it is, if banning alcohol is going to have ANY short term benefit whilst solutions the larger deeper problems are worked on, is that a bad thing?

No. There are dry blackfellas communities in Australia where the ban comes from the community itself.

But the NT intervention, with its wholesale alcohol and porn bans imposed by the federal government is a different thing.

Ive been to Daly river and they have a ban on aboriginals drinking at the 'pub' after certain hours. They also had their own spot to drink and let loose (something they requested) - had some funny rules on their sign.

We werent supposed to drink in the town at night but snuck a few slabs in

A mate works events for council. During a NAIDOC week do recently he was instructed to relax his responsible service of alcohol for the event.

Like, that's ****ed.

Of the 40+ over 50s ive worked with, literally one i would actually recommend as working at a reasonable pace. The programs may have been around forever but younger people grew up with smart phones, playstations etc. It just comes more naturally, much of it taught in schools. Upgrades to these systems have leftthe old generation behind in my experience

As for the brickie analogy, youre just arguing for the sake of argument. No one in their right mind is hiring a small chick to work at a mans capacity on a job site. Equality is lovely but it isnt realistic in all jobs. Head out of sand required

i work with a fair number of +50 and can think of only one that has problems with technology & working at a reasonable pace and its 100% because he's lazy as s**t.
its not about what generation you're born in its your personality & willingness to adapt

Because white folk don't have problems with the drink either. We're just lucky enough to drink ourselves to death in the privacy of our own homes in a much more goverment approved manner.
This. As to op
I don't think institutional racism exists so much but it is there subtlely and that is insidious as well.

'Let's not pretend white folk don't have problems with the drink' is a bit of a nothing argument. There are more alcohol-related problems in the non-indigenous (why colour it, anyone can like a drink) population than indigenous, but indigenous people make up about 3-4% of the population so you'd expect that to be the case. The stats are out there for what happens pro rata. The rate of indigenous deaths as a result of alcohol abuse is something like 7 times higher.

Alcohol abuse comes in more forms in the 'white' community which is a function of affluence. You don't hear about high functioning alcoholics, day drinking socialite housewives getting into the chardy and then onto the pool cleaner guy, lawyers with coke habits etc. in the indigenous community because you don't tend to hear about those people in the indigenous community without the substance abuse qualifier.

My team is mostly 40s and 50s and we have been doing innovative and original work since the very early 2000s. We are very much a market leader in our field.

Did have a funny incident a couple of days ago at swimming lessons when we were talking about how you would go about assisting someone in trouble in the water. One kid about 8 seemed to almost have an obsession with Asian people apparently not being able to swim. Hand raised with "Yeah, but, but what about if the person you are trying to rescue is Asian and they accidentally make you drown with them?". My reply was "Umm, mate just because someone is Asian doesn't automatically mean they can't swim.. Have you heard of Sun Yang?"

There is an element of racism in this country, that is undeniable. Populist
dog whistlers like Pauline Hanson depend on it to remain relevant and popular with her supporters. Thankfully this sorry lot are in the minority and given their age demographic, on the decline. I believe the majority of Australians accept and mostly embrace our multicultural existence and our indigenous heritage. Public apologists for people like Hanson ( eg: Bolt, Latham , Panahi, Jones, Henderson, Devine etc ) resort to demonising those who feel that free speech is not an entitlement for bigoted claptrap because they have no intellectual argument to oppose it. Most Australians are better than them. To borrow a phrase often ironically misused by the Murdoch reptiles: “They don’t represent real Australia”

Bondi Rescue would be the reason

Interesting logic. We do take being able to swim for granted here. It's a cultural thing. It's hot in Summer pretty much everywhere (even Hobart gets to 30) and we live on a big * off island surrounded by water. Plus plenty we rich Liberal voters have backyard pools. If you went to school with a kid who couldn't swim it was weird. We had a Chinese kid come to the school when I was about 8 or 9 and he couldn't swim. The rest of us didn't get why he got to sit out the swimming carnival. As an adult it's easy to understand that if you grow up in China until primary school age you don't necessarily just learn to swim.

Not sure anyone needing a water rescue is going to 'make you drown with them', Asian or otherwise.

True, although I'd say though that the average standard of swimming in Australian kids these days has dropped off a fair bit compared to people born in the 80s.
