Has anyone else noticed the downturn in quality on bigfooty of late?

Every week, there's these annoying polls over who is the best poster, who should be in the hall of fame, etc. Who cares anyway?

If these were just one off's, it wouldn't be so bad. But why is it, that so many people are making their own ego building so apparent, that it takes over the rest of the site (not just on the general board)?

For instance, people posting huge topics about how they had a disagreement with the moderator, or topics deliberately posted with the intention of getting others to give them a huge pat on the back. Is that what the site is really supposed to be about?

It's a handful of culprits, rather than the majority too. Not everyone on here is like that. There are heaps of good posters. But bigfooty is being taken over, by this handful of people who, as soon as a topic arises, pull it to pieces with their own small talk, or ego building.

And then you have people, who feel the need to post every single detail of their personal lives on here. I'm not talking about people bringing up something that happened to them, that might be of interest/humour to others. But rather people who discuss topics that no one else but themselves would be interested in.

And what's the deal with people turning the forums into a chat site discussing trivial details of their own personal lives in a conversational manner? If people want to post one line replies to each other (like in a conversation), for sanity's sake do it in the chat room, instead of clogging up the forum boards. That is not what the forum is designed for.

It's not a matter of deciding just not to read these topics either. For starters, a lot of decent topics and other boards besides just the general board are being taken over by this type of crap.

Secondly, these huge nonsense topics make computers run slow. It takes ages to load bigfooty these days, whereas it never used to in the past. What's the point in loading up a forum full of one-line conversational style posts, when it slows the thing down for everyone?

Do people think they'll be noticed more, because of their huge tally of posts, and the fact that they've got a whole load of one-line nonsense posts in almost every topic?

I bet I'm not the only one to feel this way either. Perhaps no one else will come on here and agree with me, but you can put that down to not wanting to be slagged off by those who are the main perpetrators of this nonsense.

Have to agree that their have been a lot of nonsense threads started in recent times. Perhaps some tighter moderation on thread starting may be the answer. You can't please everybody and everybody is entitled to have some fun here. I just ignore the nonsense threads. The areas where I post are still good.

I agree with you even though I am one of the culprits probably. Its ok to have a bit of fun with another poster as long as you stay talking about footy in some way and are willing to talk seriously about the game in some way.People like Carlton Boy should not be allowed to post.

m_sm,

i agree with your points...
its a shame u had to create a new handle to post such a message..

i think the moderators should take a look and lock some of those nonsense posts/polls.. sure, some are fun, but, goes overboard..

tho, this problems occurs at almost every other message board/forum i post at... eg. nonsense posts, flame wars...
at one board, every single thread degenerates into a flame war about race/religion.. its just ridiculous... just glad that has happened here yet...

Where have you been? This place is great for heated discussions about those topics. At least it allows us to get away from mindless crap about fake weddings, whos the best etc.

m_sm,

Some valid points there but I think your post smacks of hipocrisy a bit. A huge chunk of the problem is people creating 'fake' identities to start arguments/crap threads/personally abuse people, something that you have just done.

Saying what you have said without using your regular nick is like writing a letter of complaint without signing your name to it. Such letters get filed in the cylindrical filing cabinet.

You guys have to be kidding .... who decides what topic is interesting and what is a 'crock' lol ...... if you want to make it a purely football related board ... go ahead, but if you have 'general convo' boards, then alls fair........ the fact that some of these 'crock' subjects gets so many responses is prolly a good sign that people do enjoy some light hearted bantor ..... i personally find this thread a crock, but unlike you guys i respect your right to post this 'crock'

yes its good to discuss those things here.. as the discussions here are still civil...
i was commenting that on other boards i've visited, its much worse than this one, where its constant name calling, race/religion abusing... etc..

Actually, it just proves that if I had posted under my regular name people wouldn't have been able to stop themselves from having a shot back with un-called-for abuse.

I take it, that "Blues Brat" is your "real" name then too? Talk about hypocracy.

I would have to question what the agenda is of some of the people who come to this forum.

People who have to have polls for who is the best poster etc must have some sort of insecurity - especially when they are saying stuff like, "don't forget to vote for me".

Some of these people smack of being either very insecure, or nerds with no friends.

Personally, I come on this forum to either talk football, or talk $hit. This may involve anything from having a laugh, or having a heated debate. I'm not concerned with how many posts I have made, or if I am 'popular' - I have a set of real life friends and I am comfortable with who I am. I don't need someone on a forum (who I really don't know) to pat me on the back so I can feel good about myself.

None of what you've said is even relevant to my original post.

If people want to have "chat-room" like discussion, then why don't they use the chat room, instead of clogging up every other board with one line, conversationalist posts?

And why bother posting topics which inevitably will be of no interest, to more than a few posters?

This type of posting makes the site run slow, if you hadn't noticed. I used to be able to come to bigfooty, and read every decent topic in a matter of and hour or so. I'd be lucky now, if I could read 3 or 4 topics, and respond in the same amount of time. It's down to people misusing the site.

It's not intended to be a "chat" site. That's what the chat room is for. Why is it that we have a handful of people on here, who then misuse the forums like this? It's to the detriment of the site.

I think you may be right m_sm.

There have been an increase in drivel here of late. I'm probably not completely innocent either.

m_sm its the off-season, what do you expect?

Id rather the drivel going on than the outright abuse that was rampant last year.

For what its worth, a General talk board is just that, general talk.

There are specific places here for all sorts of discussion. The Footy board, the sub-footy board with each clubs specific boards.

Here theres a Culture, Soccer. Wrestling etc.

Your call on keep it in chat? Well what about people that dont (me) really like the chat format to much or dont get the chance to share the same time on-line?

As long as there are no personal attacks and the site owners (because were ALL guests on their site) dont mind, then I cant see why you should.

Cheers.
