Is Collingwoods recruiting any worse than other teams. As more and more draft picks seem to be flopping, maby this is a result of Collingwood not having the right coaches to get young players to the next level.

Other teams dont seem to have this problem and Collingwood is either cursed or doing something wrong.

Only two clubs have won flags in the past four years, and only four clubs have competed in Grand finals.

There's a lot of teams in the same boat in terms of poor recruiting. Its all relative.

We''ve done ok without doing anything particuarly outstanding. 2002 was our worst recent year at the draft table, 2003 is also looking shonky. 2004 is looking good, albeit with the good form of some of the draftees being for Willy Reserves.

As far as trading, we've done ok. Woey has been servicable, and Morrison and Carecella good this year. Williams for Adkins was a debacle. Other trading mistakes were so long ago its not important any more.

All I was wondering if any of Collingwoods coaches have the ability to guide and develop young players. Wen you had the u19's competition, you had a coach wo was able to concentrate on that and the club used to have a great wealth of young players.

Its no better or worse than a dozen other clubs. IFfyou want to see a shocking recruiting record take a look at the Bombers. Featuring gems like Bolton(4th overall) Hefernan, McAlister, Shane Harvey, Ted Richards to name just a few. Can't wait for Rohan Connolly's story on the Bomber stuffups over the last seven years. Our father sons are also miles better than Jobe Watson.

I think our recruiting is worse than other clubs in one sense it is too focused on the way off future.

We recruit guys that rarely play in their first year at the club.
I can only think of 4 under MM
Lokan
Rowe
Lonie
Fraser.
There maybe one other (Didak but not sure).

We tend to go for 'project' players such as
Morrison
Hall
Richards
The Shaws
Rusling
Walker etc

Most other clubs recruit players that are able to play AFL in their first year.
Even clubs that have selections after us get players that are able to play good footy in year 1.

Thats not a bad thing, but the project has to pay off. Fanning's another project player. Only Walker and perhaps Richards and R SHaw (finally) look the goods at this early stage. Players like Hall and Morrison (and dare i say it, Davidson) are huge risks which cost the club big time in terms of lack of depth if they dont develop according to projections. With project players, by definition there is a lot more hit and miss. And we've been missing, not hitting.

Excited about Rusling though.

So what have you seen in Rusling that excites you?

Sure he is braining them in the Willi seconds but that doesn't excite me as much as it would if he was doing that in the Willi 1's.
To me he is just another one of the athletes we have as project players.

I want to believe

You just answered your own question. Blind faith. Plus the fact he's kicking goals.

It's disgraceful. We should be putting every resource into our recruiting department.

Easy on the quotes there MOTR!

And also, I can't believe you guys gave up pick 3 and C. King for McKee!!!

Which would have been Pavlich - Oh the pain!!!!

Not quite right - Pick 3 + CKing for SMcKee + Pick 7 -

and we are led to believe that Fremantle would have taken Pavlich with pick 2 if Collingwood had Pick 3.

Apparently Freo's strategy was "If Richmond have Pick 3 they need midfielders so we'll take Haselby with pick 2 hoping that the Tiges will leave Pavlich for us at Pick 4; If the Collingwood have Pick 3 they need taller players so we'll take Pavlich with Pick 2 hoping the Pies will leave Haselby for us at Pick 4"

Collingwood were NEVER going to get Pavlich, unless we had taken him with Pick 1.

Thats the way I believe it panned out, although I wouldn't be complaining with Haselby in the side.

Yep, No 7 was a star for us too! Danny Roach (anyone remember him?) DUD!

Played 1 game!

As a Tasmanian I remember the local media were all in a flap prior to that draft about a local star teenager who `looked like going to Collingwood' with pick 7. This player actually went elsewhere with pick 19 as we picked his team mate, Roach.

The Player? BRAD GREEN! (Ouch!)

So in summation, we miss out on Pavlich/Hasleby and Green and pick up McKee and Roach!

NO WONDER I DRINK!

The fact is Pavlich DID go at 3
