Comics like Jimmy Carr and Jim Jeffries (early on before he got too political) are my favourite.

Jim Jeffries is now horrific

JackOutback, had some free time yesterday and watched Nanette. Not sure what I was expecting but it wasn't that. Wouldn't give it the 100% or the 21% that it got, but it was excellent. In it's own way. I don't think there is a big market for comedy specials which turn very serious mid way through, but I also don't think she's intending to start a trend. Just telling her story.

You classify it as comedy?

Everyone has their own taste. Some people find Kevin Hart as funny as Flying High.

If Nanette was 100% angry ranting feminist lesbian etc. it would be getting a lot more negative press.

Maybe she doesn’t project anger in the same way that Egyptian whack job on Q&A did the other week, but does Hannah have any strings to her bow other than I am a mentally ill Lesbian from hicksville, Tasmania and lecturing men on how they should behave?

Exactly, it made an impact because it’s unique. Comedy has often mined tragedy but this is comedy plus tragedy plus social commentary plus a breakdown of comedy. And it was timely.

As for Jeffries, he’s always been ‘lefty’, his breakthrough bit was about gun control. It’s funny seeing people thinking he was on their side politically because he had an angry, vulgar schtick, then furiously dropping him.

But then he’s also always been pretty average.

Hilarious seeing Jimbo cuddling up to the woke section of the US cable tv comedy circuit, considering all the stories he used to tell about being Eskimo brothers with Russell Brand, and prob most notoriously about drugging underage girls for sex, should by all rights see him cancelled by the self appointed ‘new’ gatekeepers of comedy, Samantha Bee, Hannah Gadsby, Sarah Silverman et al.

How come cancel culture gives Jimbo a pass?

Is this why he is now a mouthpiece for the woke left?

The issue in a nutshell. People (white males, largely) having a whinge because different people are being allowed to share the spotlight. Here’s an idea, if you don’t like Hannah Gadsby, don’t watch her and shut the heck up.

I watch stand-up on an almost weekly basis, there’s plenty of great comedy out there. There’s plenty of politically incorrect stuff if that’s your bent. Comedy is far from dead.

Sorry for the late reply, people like Hannah Gadsby just aren't funny because they're too concerned about not "offending" anyone (unless you're white middle aged male).

The "politically incorrect" stuff you talk about is rarely on main stream media if at all.

Shouldn't have to go down web rabbit holes to find it. It's the ridiculous "take offence to anything" that gives merit to the op (as much as I hate to admit it).

Jefferies has never been a political comic. His whole act was lots of swearing, jokes about religion, jokes about misogyny, jokes about rape etc. It's pretty funny (and he highlighted it in the next special) that the gun control bit thrust him into prominence because it's not representative of his body of work. In any case as funny as the routine is it's not really politically charged, it's just highlighting the ridiculous arguments that exist within that debate.

I think he is trying to distance himself from his past acts to try and appeal to a wider audience. Making jokes about rape and dead babies won't get your regular airtime on network TV in the US. But he's full of shit pretending to be woke and jumping on board the #metoo thing and all that. IMO watching him do jokes about Trump is pretty cringeworthy about 100 other comics do it better.

He's the stand-up equivalent of a shock jock, copying his heroes to get a reaction. But his politics have always leaned left, he's always been opposed to religion, conservative uptight types etc. Sure, there appears to be some hypocrisy between his jokes and his politics but I'm perfectly capable of making an offensive joke for a laugh with my friends, but it's obvious the jokes don't reflect my actual beliefs and are made for a laugh.

Hannah Gadsby is a serial victim. She may have had an awful upbringing but she doesn't do herself any favours with her man-hating nonsense. She's not funny at all in my opinion and just comes across as an angry woman who is hell bent on revenge. She's entitled to her spot though and if it is some people's cup of tea then go for it. I just don't find her funny. It's more of a social commentary, what she does.

Sadly, a lot of the great comics have gone underground, so to speak. Scottish comic Jerry Sadowitz is one of the best stand-ups alive but you have to go to the Edinburgh Fringe to find him as every time he pops his head up some pathetic cretin with an axe to grind wants to take their shot at him. This apologist culture we live in is going to destroy society.

It starts with the very notion that comedy should be censored. Which oxygen-stealing piece of sh*t decided that?

Some of the harshest, most un-PC comics are still doing well for themselves. Frankie Boyle is hilarious and his stature just seems to keep growing, Jimmy Carr another. Bill Burr is huge.

Who would have walked out of Alcoholocaust or I Swear To God and thought 'that big old lefty and his lefty rants'?

I don't really care which side of the fuselage he wants to sit on, I just think as a political comic he should stick to saying the C word a lot and trying to make the audience uncomfortable.

Personally, I don't think he's much chop and his last special was probably his worst. How he got as far as he did with a bit of shouting and saying campaigner a lot is the real mystery here. Guys like Jesselnik and Boyle manage the schtick far, far better.

Interesting to note that another of that ilk, Bill Burr (genuine social liberal, but not an SJW) appears to barely be able to stand Jim.
