There are questions over all of our batsmen.

Thinking laterally I would give Ponting a chance to get some form as an opener until somebody (anybody)came along.

Thinking laterally...... one batsman who I once thought would have a 10 year international career, but went off the rails is Mark Cosgrove. He's opening for Tassie these days and in pretty good nick.

I fear his run ins with the cricketing authorities have him pegged as a cast off, but the one thing I do know is that the kid can bat.

Dave Warner is playing in New Zealand's domestic T20 comp right now. When was his last shield game?

I wouldn't be picking one player with a questionable technique and temperament to replace another with the same shortcomings.

Whispers that Ponting has decided to call it quits after this test, certainly as captain, not sure about as a player.

Cosgrove is an interesting choice, Langers. He's got the technique and the eye of a top class batsman. Would almost certainly adjust to the level without too many problems (he's that sort of player). His issue is staying the course.

Hughes is cooked. Give him 2 years now....

If we are to play Smith, he has to be played as a bowler too - slot him in at number 8, bowl him for a quota of overs.

You blokes solving all the macro (big picture problems), got too depresssing, so we are now taking it one day at a time....

To temper expectation, (after yesterdays disaster), we've set ourselves for hoping at the end of todays play, Aussies will have done well if
1. we drop less than 5 catches
2. we restrict the other mob to less than 450
3. we at least take 1 wicket per session...

here's hoping thats a possibililty....

Not what I'm suggesting Langers. My point is we have a talented player who is allowed to drift off to play T20 tourneys. The only other Aussie over there are playing for their retirement fund (Hodge, Lee). He has been pigeonholed. He needs to get out of the NSW system.

SA took a very hard line with Cosgrove to no avail. I wonder whether the Australian selectors will be as cautious about his weight. The Kiwis have pushed Jesse Rider to get in shape and England have banished Samit Patel for similar reasons..

Sad about Ponting, but it needs to happen. Alas Clarke will get the gig.

I imagine this game will be finished by stumps today or no later than lunch tomorrow.

Really quite the most shitful display I've seen in a while.

Or since Adelaide Mess :D

Seriously Australia is resembling the decline of West Indies cricket, if this crap continues, Cricket in Australia at least will be dead for sure.

No weather intervention to save us and unlikely that Huss and Haddin can bat for 2 days....

Failing an "Act of God" or some form of cheating (not sure how we could even do that)....

Reckon, you are spot on.....agreed pathetic all round...

The ICC rankings don't lie... 5th! They do lie, we're not THAT GOOD.....

I hear that GH has been practicing his bomb threats all week ready for days 4 and 5 ;)

The bomb threat looks like our best chance!

I was sort of hoping for the sewerage pipes in the change rooms to break (like in Grand final) only this time, flood the rooms and fill the ground......

There's enough shit going on out on the ground without the need for any more....

400 lead on the first innings says it all really. The truly sobering thing is that we're not even playing one of the better sides in the world.

Australian cricket is in severe decline. Take this team that played at the Oval in 2001 when Australia was head and shoulders above any other side:

Hayden, Langer, Ponting, M Waugh, S Waugh, Martyn, Gilchrist, Lee, Warne, Gillespie and McGrath. Sitting out at that time were:
Slater, Elliott, Hodge, Lehmann, Siddons, Law, Bevan, Blewett, McGill, Kasprowisc, Bichel, Rackemann and a few others I haven't thought of.

Today there is no one demanding selection in this very poor side. From today's side who would get in? Maybe Hussey.

As for this Test Australia will need someone to bat for more than two days and make 300, and have others stay with him. The only possible person to do that would be Ponting and at the moment he has a problem making 30. The wicket will flatten out, but maybe take some spin.

Think we would have performed better with the has beens than the current side....

Hughes run out. Lordy.

Ponting looked very ordinary out there. He doesn't seem to be able to pick up the line very well anymore.... whatever. Did anyone else here the 'cheer squad' commentators this morning on Channel 9?

Yep, old Ritchie must have given them a real pep-up before play.

Think they must get paid 2c for each viewer that is watching.

I can't wait for the press conferences and the Sydney team to be announced.

The leadership, including the selectors and coaches need to be seriously looked at. The Perth test papered over some cracks but, thankfully, that's been exposed as the aberration that many thought it was.

Hard decisions need to be made right now.

Agree! Ponting will resign but Clarke cannot be captain!

Need to get rid of Tim nielson immediately.
