I can't think of a more undeserving captain of Australia since Barry Jarman.

At least Jarman was a nice bloke.

What's this bloke ever achieved again apart from going sloppy seconds on the Fevola?

Pretty poor CV for apparently 'the second most important job in Australia......'

Clarkes rewarded with the captaincy, he is pushing 30 and has looked like the flakiest #4 we have had over the past 12 months! Does this mean we are cursed with him at #4 for the next three years or more?

If you take out his bloated scores against NZ and WI he has been averaging just over 28 against decent sides since the beginning of 2010. Is this cricket Australias idea of thinking long term?

Congratulations on selecting Khawaja! if he can make it to double figures at #3 that should be enough to keep Punter out of the side on form alone.

The shame of Australian cricket is not that Clarke will take over from Ponting full time, it is that CA placed all their eggs in his basket long ago. They have no viable, medium term alternatives

He is the flakiest no 4 on figures since George Giffen in the 1880s.

At least Giffen opened the bowling or was first change.

Cricket stats can be quite misleading, when i look at Clarkes overall stats he looks like he should be a better batsman. His past 12 months have been woeful, which is actually reflected in the figures. However, it is the '08 to '09 seasons where he steadily declined in my eyes, though the figures don't look too bad.

I think he is the sort of bat that cannot be relied on when the going is tough. Making runs against soft opponents or scoring heavily when the game is effectively over is more his forte. I can recall one innings of substance in the UK, but they are few and far between.

If we are going to be cursed with him for a few more years then drop him down the order, he strikes me as more of a number five or six in the Bevan style than a number 4.

I preferred him circa '03/04, when he was at least playing his shots and either scoring freely or getting out. Now he seems like his defences are not good enough to be a blocker, and his attacking shots are self limited - the Clarke version of 'solid' is pretty stodgy and fragile.

Apparently Doug the Rug is 12th man today.

Hilfy must have some great photos....

Did you read that idiot Hilditch's comments re the pace attack in today's Age?

The side still looks astonishingly weak to me - would be a miracle if we won this test.

From the same article...

Clarke on the non-selection on Doug the Rug.

''The selectors, for whatever reason, have stuck with Hilf, which shows loyalty and respect to Ben. He's bowled well throughout this series without getting too many wickets.''

So the captain not even told why a bowler that has done SFA this summer, gets another gig.

Photos indeed

I'll take 2-75.

Dead rubber this. Don't expect the Poms will be too concerned with the result.

You spoke to soon, Hank. Decidedly impatient in the last over before lunch. 1/55.

Hank closest to the pin.

Watched the whole session except for that over (had to head upto the shop for some bread). Its always the way isn't it. Do the hard yards and miss the glory.

Despite the setback, still happy with the mindset.

Score at the end of the Second Session.

Closest to the Pin....

3 / 156

2-133

Who will have more career Test runs: Khawaja or Hughes?

I've got Usman.

It would be easy to pick Khawaja on his first two scoring strokes. Kerry O'Keeffe nearly leapt out of the box to boof him.

Of course. But Khawaja is more orthodox, more organised and can play both sides of the wicket.

Without doubt. There is some sort of expectation on him at the moment. A bit like David Hookes in the Centenary Test.

It has been a while since we had someone debut at #3. Ponting debuted at 6 IIRC.

He has certainly been next in line for while, but with none of the hype that accompanied Hughes' entry into Test cricket.
