Maybe we could coax Peter Sleep out of retirement as a spinning/batting all rounder?

On s serious note, did you read the analysis of players from both sides in today's Age? Basically they said Hussey was the only certainty to be picked in a joint side. They contended that while Watson's and Strauss' numbers were similar that Strauss was more important because he was involved in bigger partnerships, scored higher scores. Watson was consistent with 50, but Strauss' impact as an opener was greater. I agree.

Anyone got any spare coffin nails. The Poms are nailing as many in as they can now...............be hardly any wood left.

Thats a bit unfair the comparison Grizz.

So besides Watson running out his two partners (edit... and himself just now), he can't be held responsible if his partner goes out spoiling his opening partnership stats.

Put Cook as Watson's partner and Hughes as Strauss'....

I think Smith is potentially a very good cricketer - maybe in days gone by we could have nurtured/carried him in the test side. But we simply don't have the talent and experienced players for that luxury anymore.

That's good news about Beer - how is your lovely wife by the way?

Another question: would you be persevering with Hughes now?

The wife is good mate... how are things at your end?

Yes, no doubting Smith has potential, but he's a long way off being a quality test player. I think Hogg is spot on. The problem is he's not getting the overs for NSW.

I just don't know with Hughes. I think he's showing improvement, but I'm yet to be convinced he's a long term prospect as an opener. Steyn will tear him a new one in Oct if he doesn't do some serious work over the winter.

When was the last time Australia had a left arm orthodox spinner as a regular player and or took wickets?

The last time I remember a left arm orthodox taking wickets was Border against the Windies.

I think that the selectors have backed themselves into a corner over several of their selections.

Beer and Smith should be allowed to develop.I do not think that now is the time to recall Hauritz. Then again he is only 29 which is an age when spinners are starting to reach their peak. Either way there are options there.

Fast bowlers can come from the clouds and do not require the long development period of spinners. Any one know of any on the horizon.

Batting is our problem and is going to be for a few years yet. Khawaja appears to be a composed and tidy bat and could be the first of the rebuild.

Smith may be able to develop batting at 7.

As I have previously said the only others with potential appear to be Maddinsen and Lynn. But they are years away. Are there any other youngsters?

There is a bit of fast bowling talent around, but not much fit fast bowling talent. I believe the pick of the crop of the youngsters are Cameron and Pattinson. I haven't seen much of Cameron, but by all reports he's a great prospect. Pattinson is strong and hits the wicket hard.

On the batting front Ferguson needs to be fast tracked through along with Khwaja. The two youngsters you mentioned are the best long term prospects. I think in the short to medium term, we might need to have another look at a few players in their mid to late 20's who have at stages been on the fringe... S Marsh, M Cosgrove, T Paine, L Pommersbach. That would need a change in the selection panel.

The Vic's are also fast tracking that young all rounder who turned his back on the GC Suns.... name escapes me.

And Rodney Hogg said this morning that Smith needs 1000 overs in state cricket to be ready for the test team.

Watching Smith bat, I just keep waiting for him to move the left leg out of the way and slog 20/20 style.

Thats the problem now adays with 20/20. All technique has gawn out the window (although Special K looks technically good) with younger players coming thru.

Interesting stat I heard a few weeks back on the radio. The English team only has two players in the test team from their 20/20 national team. The Ausies only have two that aren't. Probably says a bit about the depth of Australian cricket, but also points to our inability to construct a long innings.

Well, besides the actions of his partner Watson has a history of not going on with his scores. It's not about the opening partnership per se, it's about the opener contributing to partnerships, anchoring the innings.

Oh my, didn't think we could sink any lower.

The time has come for a clean-out and its starts at the top.

I don't care how many years Neilson is signed up for - GAWN

Batting coach Langer - GAWN

Bowling coach Cooley - GAWN

Fielding coach Young - GAWN

Bring in the Victorian Coach. Since taking over from Hooksey, we haven't looked back.

Get Warne or McGill in as spin bowling coaches.

Bring back DKL as the fast bowling coach.

Bobby Simpson as slips coach.

Jonty Rhodes as fielding coach.

Time to split up the Test and short format teams like the Poms have done.

No more stuffing around now... Cricket Aust has plenty of coin and time to start using some.

Henry. Smartly before this series we signed up nielson for an additional three years can you Fu$&in believe that? Defies comprehension!!!!!

Yes as we have said much like the demise of the west indies circa 1994 the key point is that west indies have not improved 15 yrs later.

Yes, I am aware of that GH.

I don't care if he's contracted for 10, pay him out.

Good to hear buddy and I'm back in melb for a few hrs.

Now should we start a thread ' who should captain australia' obviously Clarke is not the answer, he is more worried about how his sunglasses look on the back of his neck than cricket.

Would anyone be interested in see a return of Australia A? I would like to see a couple of test, one days and T20 between them and Australia for a bit of rivalry for spots.

Yep - I would.

Play a match every week between the Best and the Rest between now and August.

Those that want to play IPL can go get ****ed...

I would like to see an Australia A play touring sides and they in turn tour other countries.

What I would really like to see is a return to each state playing the touring team and all test players be available for those games.

This used to occur before the advent of ODs. And yes, there certainly is an OD of them.

A general question. Why has Queensland only ever produced two real test class batsmen (Peter Burge and Mathew Hayden) and only a handful of bowlers?

Anyone catch Hilditch's bizarre statements re the Ashes series?

Is that true?
Re the question I asked about Queensland,s failure to produce test players.

Hohns and Colin McCool are the only test class spinners Qld has produced.

I am a proud Queenslander and this is a serious question. My intention is not to rub it in against anyone instead I want to see if any have any ideas as to why Qld has not been successful.

I have a theory that would stand up to scrutiny for oh about five minutes.

Which ones in particular Grizz.

I heard Hohns on SEN today and was asked if he would consider coming back as a national selector if asked.

Basically said he'd do it in a heartbeat! :thumbsu: :D

About how the selectors had done a good job but the players had let them down.

Oh yep, heard that one.

If thats the case then, why didn't they drop Clarke and Hilf?

Here were players that clearly let them down, yet continued to getting picked.
