Truly horrible.

Couldn't judge how Ricky Ponting was batting 'cause he was out too quick. But Pup looked truly crap.

Michael Clarke is overrated mate, extremely overrated.

Clarke look very, very nervous to me.

Spot on GH.

I'm over him. Doesn't do the hard yards. Can't guts it out.

Question for all.... Who will be the next captain after Ponting?

if you were a betting man, you'd still go with Clarke. The ACB have invested too much in blooding him as a future captain. Though it won't work if he keeps this form up.
Hussey and Katich are too old, so i reckon if Clarke doesn't get it, Shane Watson could be an outside chance. Has matured a lot as a cricketer over the past 2 years, and his spot is well and truly cemented in the side, so not a totally unrealistic option.

That was an appalling performance today. We don't have the players, and the ones we do have are low on confidence and form. Selectors, coaches and leadership have big questions over them in my opinion.

Yep, could be Jeffs next job to fix up the crap.

Yes, would not be surprised, esp if we lose to those poms on home soil.

Re captain - Perhaps shane watson as much as i hate him. For me, Hughes should be in the team every test from now on, he has a great attitude, has great potential. I remember him being touted as a 'future captain', but we said the same abt X Ellis....he is doomed to be a 75 kg lightweight.

Re Hughes, I know someone in cricketing circles who knows him well and he says one thing: Hughes cannot be picked right now, says his development has gone backwards for two reasons.

1. His technique was worked over by the Poms last time, but instead of working through it, he was 'encouraged' to change the way he batted.

2. He was then dropped from the team (too early in this person's opinion) and lost all confidence, not only in himself but those around him.

Hughes, ever since junior cricket, has been an eye and confidence player. It never failed him, until the last Ashes series. This bloke won't say much more on account of his contract, but I get the distinct impression there's much behind the scenes stuff that went down.

Agreed, am a big fan of Hughes and reckon we should've persisted with him longer. esp as he's a big confidence player.
the comparisons to Ellis got me thinking about what the Hawks XI would look like

-Buddy and Roughie to open the bowling (if Buddy don't get you, Roughie will)
-Birchall is your classic swing bowler, similar to Terry Alderman
-Opening the batting is the dependable pair of Guerra and Mitchell
-Rioli to come in first drop, a dashing strokeplayer in the mould of Tendulkar or Lara
-Middle order would comprise Hodge, Sewell and Lewis.
-Ossie to wear the gloves
-and Changa bowling offies.

Birch will have to do underarm.....

Just a few thoughts before I go to witness day 2.

Anderson bowled well in the conditions. There was a bit of moisture in the pitch. His line (similar to the one that Marshall used all those years ago) encouraged the play & miss.

This is possibly the weakest batting lineup Australia's had since 1978-9.

At 3/2 the talk drifted round the Chappell Stand of the lowest 1st innings total seen. I remembered the Windies getting 130 in 96-7. For a while it looked like we wouldn't get that many.

20 years ago Australia were 4 down for not all that many. In strode a bloke in his maiden test who proceeded to cart the English bowlers to all corners of the ground. His name? Mark Waugh. We're in desperate need of somebody of his skill at the moment.

This series looks to be shaping up in the same way as the 70-71 series. Our batting lineup could crumble for sub 150 scores at any time. The difference is that during that series some young blokes called Marsh, Chappell & Lillee made significant debuts (ok, Marsh's was quite underwhelming). Our depth in this country isn't producing players of that calibre, but they seem to produce more Ken Eastwoods.

Pommie supporters absolutely sh!t me. Then again, they can crap on all they like about us being ruled by the Queen, unlike them at least we have democratic self-determination. (Thank Gordon Brown & the Lisbon treaty for that one.)

our fielding has been appalling so far. so has our batting and bowling, for that matter.
playing very much like the number 5 ranked test side that we are.

Terrible. The fielding is woeful. Not much consistency with the bowling either. Seems like a lot of easy runs out there. I like how Doug tries stuff though - he's combative.

Ponting's captaincy has been awful. I don't care what any of you say about Doherty, he's not test standard in my opinion.

To put this all into perspective, England are middle of the table in terms of test ranking, and we're getting absolutely pummeled. We are in complete disarray.

North can't be picked for the next test, but I bet he hits a score in the second innings.

I've signed Nielsen up to be a coach at Carnegie Kanga Cricket starting next week.

I like the way North bowls. Right speed and plenty of air.

Argee with you on X. Bowls too quick and flat. Alright at one-day level but Test matches are a different story.

I'd be tempted to play North as the sole spinner and play another bowler/batsman in place of X.

I don't know what I'd do, Hank. I think there's been too many band aid solutions and bad calls over the past few years to just roll back. The balance of the side is wrong, players haven't been blooded and persevered with etc
Plus having your two best batsmen playing so badly, then setting woeful fields etc

It's a mess. No easy way out of this one. Just need to tale stock in an honest way, make the cuts, and put up with the pain, which is what I'd prefer to the crap that's being dished-up now.

Sadly, we have no captain in waiting, and the heir apparent looks injured and totally out of sorts mentally.
