How's this, Messy?

Drop all batsmen except Watson and Haddin, and load the team with bowlers. Bring Johnson up to 3 and we're in with a show.

Roebuck posed the question on the ABC on what Australian player would make the English side on current form. Haddin was the only one.

Quite honestly the most bizarre team I can recall seeing us select for quite some time. The selectors have to wear this one as far as I;m concerned - Smith as a specialist batsman and Hughes were terrible, terrible calls.

It seems the calls for Pointing to drop down the order are gathering pace too.

Where to go from here?

Absolutely shambolic selections.

Picking two out form players, what were they thinking? Oh wait, hang on, they play for NSW......

Ponting needs to move down the order, problem is, who moves into number 3 which can be considered a specialist spot.

No one is really bashing down the door. Maybe Shaun Marsh from WA, been in pretty good form and has international experience though in the ODI arena only).

Keep Hussey too. A team like that would probably make only 50 less than what we put out today.

And 12 overs safely negotiated by England. Yet another woeful day from Australia.

I saw a couple of Johnson bouncers that would have required air traffic control clearance to take off.

Bowled, Mitch.

North was crap, and dropping him was long overdue. But, for the life of me, they had to actually pick a specialist batsman to replace him to strengthen the batting line, not weaken it, which is what they did. Truly horrendous decision.

The selectors are in the unpleasant position of, on the one hand, having to conduct a rebuild in the middle of a series that fans consider the most important. This has brought about the selection of young players into circumstances where they look decidedly average. If you did what I did and leave work at lunch time, you'd had seen Smith look technically unsound (he was squared up far too easily by bowlers bowling at 135 km/h)

Because of this, they have to sacrifice results for the promise of results to come. Imagine Hussey (David) at 6; CA's refusal to give him a contract appears foolish.

Whether it is wisdom or folly to not select the best cattle will only become clear when players like Smith and Hughes make up a majority of the team.

The focus from here on in has to be on a competitive squad to go to England in 2013. Happy to have Smith in the team now (and Hughes if he were ready), but it has to be within a properly structured squad.

We have five seamers and a part time leggie. Why wouldn't Beer play in preference to Johnson?

The old cricketing cliche; 'pick your five best bowlers, no matter what they are'. At least the selectors have, for a change, played to the squad's strength (or what is the least of its weaknesses), rather than trying to thrust a premier cricket bowler into the glare and scrutiny of a decisive test match.

Pardon me if you've already discussed it earlier, but how would you pick the squad with a view to the next ashes? At this stage, half the team is in decline and the other half needs the guidance of those in decline. It is hardly, as you say, a model geared toward success in 2013. How might the selectors, on one hand, clear out the deadwood, and on the other, ensure that there are enough greybeards for guys like Smith and Hughes to learn their craft from?

You could run an argument for Hussey over Collingwood or at least to carry the drinks. Two in the twelve. No surprise we're being pants'd.

Roebuck actually made the same point Langers (Hussey & Haddin).

He then went on to ask whether any of our players would make a world 11 and that was where he stated only Haddin would make it, and even then that would be debatable.

Grizz - I like your idea of loading the team with bowlers...do that and give us 6 day tests and we may even bowl the English out one day!

I can't figure out what David Hussey has done wrong - surely he would've been a safer choice than Smith (unless the selectors have given up on this series and are already building toward 2013?).

I think you could also squeeze Finn out with one of Harris or Siddle. I don't think Finn has bowled very well, and our better bowlers haven't had anything on the scoreboard to bowl at or someone at the other end to bowl with.

I don't get the building for the next Ashes or next World Cup theory. It's a bit of an excuse IMO. Fair enough to blood a young guy if he's showing the goods, but the time frames really need to be much shorter. There are Australia A and Under 19's programs to identify and bring through young future talent. It shouldn't be done at the expense of selecting the strongest current team. David Hussey is a prime example.... should be under heavy consideration, but you get the feeling his card has been marked.

Everytime we keep GH out of the pubs, we pick up wickets!

Its like Xmas, happens only once a year...

Not at pub but still drinking shot boags

Did anyone tell Ponting that he's got a legspinner playing?

Bowl him for 2 overs then take him off.

This Siddle bowling is just crap.

The ball is still swinging so whilst it is, get Siddle off and Watson on.

Save Siddle for the donkey work.

Ponting seriously must go, he has completely lost the plot with his crap tactics..
We will end up losing this game and it will be Pontings fault...

I knew he could do it.

I love Mitch Johnson.

Geez just as we start to get bit excited we lose our 1st wicket and of course its Hughes...
This kid has all the potential to be a star but he just does not make the most of it, im afraid that this will be the last time we see him in the Baggy Green....:(

Ponting is finished.

Avg 16.60 for the series

North got the chop with 16.33

Peter Siddle avg more than Ponting now....

Pretty sad end to his career
