Cameron got them to 3 prelims and a GF
So what. 2019 they ran into the right teams at the right time in the finals (until the GF lol).

They won 13 games last year. 13 games in 2018. What happened this year has been on the cards people penciling them in for a top 4 were deluded.

An overhyped list of players that have a fortunate GF appearance to show for their efforts.

Have still enough talent to contend again with a little luck. But when they actually had enough experience to contend their list was not as talented as people predicted (and feared) anymore.

Yep, Port, 13 years later. :p
GWS does really match up to Port a fair bit.

2004 - Power narrowly win PF, easily win GF against side which had been up for many years and was about to slide
2016 - GWS narrowly lose PF, would of entered GF clear favourites and probably won against side which had been up for many years and about to slide.

Both slip a bit the next two years.

2007 - Power have a big unexpected jump up the ladder, enter GF big underdogs, get obliterated by side at start of dynasty period.
2019 - GWS have unexpectedly good finals, sneak into GF big underdogs, get obliterated by side in the middle of dynasty period.

2008 - Power fall away completely.
2020 - GWS fall away completely.

Actually not that different.

You literally just used making 2 prelims as justification for Thomas being able to coach at same time called Cameron a joke despite making 3 prelims. (With a horrendous injury run)

Not as bad as Hawks in 2014. But maybe GWS would do better if Cameron missed 5 weeks.

GWS need a ruckman. Especially with Jacobs retiring as well.
Have done for 3 years. And they need a small forward to help Greene. He is too good to not be rotating through the middle.

Terrible list management given they still get good picks as their players leave.

GWS need some key backs. Davis injured a lot, Lachie Keefe is OK. The others are mid size, Shaw looks cooked and Corr is gone.

Haynes for the intercepts and Williams and Whitfield for run and carry.

Ruck must be addressed, mids (Hopper, Ward, Kelly, Taranto and Coniglio) and Forwards (Greene, Himmelberg and Cameron?) all OK.

Definitely need a ruckman.
They have Flynn and Briggs. Hopefully 1 of them proves good enough.
Small forwards have Daniels and Hill.

Taylor is the other key defender. Definitely missed him.
Corr leaving now will have either bring one in, send someone like Himmelberg or Briggs back.
They have Buckley, Idun and Stein. All unproven, they may think one of them is the long term solution

GWS have been hyped as the next big thing for about 6 years now. They've been given an absurd number of top draft picks. They've had every helping hand imaginable from the AFL.

Thomas took a completely dysfunctional club that was at one of its lowest points after successive failures under Tim Watson and then Malcolm Blight, and within two years had them winning 11 games, then one kick from the GF a year later.

It was an extraordinary turnaround at a club with such a rotten culture.

The AFL set GWS up to be winning multiple premierships within its first decade. That was the AFL plan to grab market share in western Sydney.

Thomas got a young, raw side to two consecutive prelims.

Saints were nowhere in 2001 with Tim Watson a total diaster. 4 win team.

2003 Thomas had the Saints at 11 wins and 2004 got beaten by a kick in the prelim by the eventual premiers.

Thomas was a pretty good coach that never got credit. In a way his approach revolutionised AFL coaching.

Leon Cameron is a joke. I don't know why GWS persist with him. The guy is completely out of his depth.

I'm happy though because I want GWS to fail.
You've clearly got a GWS axe to grind because this is the 2nd awful awful take I've seen from you on a GWS matter, where you've just clearly pulled an opinion out of your arse and got the blinkers on.

Thomas good because 2x prelims after a few years earlier the team barely won a game...

Well mate, in 2015 Cameron got them to 11 wins, when just 2 years earlier! Just 2 years earlier!! (difference between 2001 and 2003) they were a total disaster with a grand total of 1 win for the 2013 season.
2016 they were in a prelim, a couple of kicks off the eventual premier!

Thomas good
2001 - awful
2003 - 11 win team
2004 - prelim loss to eventual premier

Cameron bad
2013 - awful
2015 - 11 win team
2016 - prelim loss to eventual premier

Congratulations on convincing the zoo to let a monkey to use a computer.

Saints had 6 first rounders in 2000 to 2002. That was a lot for back rhen

Face it, you are unable to make a decent point when it comes to GWS because you have some hatred.

It shouldn't be hard to make a point that Leon Cameron is a bad coach, lots of other people have done it successfully.

St Kilda made the GF in 97, the finals in 98.
Grant Thomas had a side with some out and legends (Harvey etc) and a slew of early picks. (Root, Goddard, Del Santo etc).
Cameron has also had a great squad, but a horrific injury run.
The concessions were almost 10 years now and certainly allowed a strong set up. But they still have the same cap everyone else does.
The biggest difference seems your perception.

So, let's try this again. Is GWS's premiership window on the verge of closing?
I think so. I think they are likely to fall off briefly for a season or two as they re-group. IMO, they are too blue-chip, in their self perceptions of their own team/club.

When they lose this attitude, then and only then, will they develop the 'Hunger', to fight, and to win.
A certain desperation is a required requisite for finals success.

No. I still see a team of superstars, who probably need a bit of a reality check and attitude shift. Any team with Whitfield, Greene, Kelly, Cogs and Haynes you can't write off. Those 5 are among the top players in the competition. If Greene can get his body right, and not get suspended, I was saying the other night he could possibly win a Brownlow.

Losing Williams and Cameron will hurt but like others in the thread have said, could also be a blessing in disguise.
