Is GWS's premiership window about to close?

But seemingly committed to a rebuild and so presumably in a different recruiting mindset from when they last offered the big bucks to Kelly.
Is he enough of a difference maker to be offering that sort of contract?
Dunno. I just like it how North always have a war chest for big fish like Aiden Corr.

At the time, it seemed so. Now? No.

Doesn't seem the guy you can build a midfield around. If I was GWS I'd be pushing him to explore options elsewhere. For $1m/year you want more than what he's dished up recently.

Do they want to keep him?

Kelly is 26 only 1 finish in their top 3 in the B&F (B&F & AA in 2017).

Contract nominally expires end of this season, however he (not the club) has an option to trigger a clause to extend his contract, worth reportedly around $1 million a season, for a further eight years.

So ~$1 mill pa until his mid 30s.

Good player, but at that money for that long?

Would any other club meet such a contract?

For a so-called "Rolls Royce" this guy really does flatter to deceive.

GWS window is shut now. They'd be smart to move Kelly and a few others on to de-burden themselves and get some premium draft picks.

It’s more like there not winning a flag with this coach ! give Ross Lyon that list they would be top four next season the talent is there just no structure or game plan whatsoever no accountability either
Lyon was too defensive for the speed and ball movement at Cameron's disposal. I will get shot down but Rocket Eade might have finally won a flag at the helm of GWS. See the 09, 10 PF teams with a better spine.

Rocket was finished in the Clarkson era. A guy like Ratten would have had them flying.

This deal is a real club killer. Didn't foresee covid or cap cuts. Put out a ridiculous long term contract for BIG money. If he triggers it he will be getting paid well over the market rate and he really isn't performing like a $1m a year player.

Deals like this can seriously disrupt a club. Other players won't be happy and it also restricts what they can do trade wise or in retaining players they can't pay fair wages to.

A real pile of poo!!!!

The Kelly and Coniglio monster contracts are arguably the two worst in AFL football at present.

2 relevant things.

Freo's midfield vs GWS:

I do rate our midfield. Mundy is a fine wine and Brayshaw, Cerra and Serong are becoming an excellant midfield core that will hold Freo in good stead for years. But not sure anyone thought that domination was on the cards against midfielders of the quality of Taranto, Coniglio and Kelly.

Workrate:

Players obviously don't care. Watching the game the only players I thought showed anything were Ash and Hill. Does anyone think Cameron can turn that around?
