Is GWS's premiership window about to close?

This deal is a real club killer. Didn't foresee covid or cap cuts. Put out a ridiculous long term contract for BIG money. If he triggers it he will be getting paid well over the market rate and he really isn't performing like a $1m a year player.

Deal like this can seriously disrupt a club. Other players won't be happy and it also restricts what they can do trade wise or in retaining players they can't pay fair wages to.

A real pile of poo!!!!
Could the AFL look at caping contracts to $700k PA?

No way. Clubs front end and back end contract to manage the cap.

Maybe a restriction on contract length?

Problem is the AFLPA want the best for their members and there is anti competition laws to consider as well.

May just see more results like Treloar, club stuffs up, moves a player on but still plays for portion of the contract.

Can't see how the Giants make finals from here. 0-3 with Collingwood (away), Sydney and the Bulldogs (Canberra) to come in their next three matches.

It's entirely possible GWS start the 2021 season 0-6.

Giants need a massive reset.

Leon needs to move on and get a fresh face and message. Brad Scott?

Coniglio should relinqish the captancy and also move back home. Something not right there. Needs to move and just play footy, no leadership roles, just enjoy playing footy.

They just need to address the ruck situation. Its been terrible for years.

It just all looks fake and made up at the Giants. No heart or soal.

If the Giants are about to enter a rebuilding period, should they consider trading Toby Greene?

He'll be 28 in September and is contracted until the end of 2024 but he could still probably fetch two first-rounders in a trade. That's what Collingwood gave up for Dayne Beams, who was six months older when traded at the end of 2018.

Surely he'd appeal to Richmond or Brisbane, who both have two first-rounders up their sleeve in the 2021 draft.

They have a pretty good list with multiple a graders and shouldn't be bottoming out. Even with all the players they've lost they still should be making finals (don't think they make it this year which raises the question WTF are they doing). Wouldn't trade Greene but can see why you would want to.

Something about getting belted by Richmond in a Grand Final destroys clubs. I'd be very worried if I was a Geelong fan.

Lol we were the only club of the 3 that didn't get destroyed, and in fact, were leading by 15 points at half time and in it until the last 5 minutes - hardly call that 'getting belted.'

Literal laugh out loud post. Well played.

More seriously with buddy’s contract coming off books would swans look at offering up enough to “just meet” band 1 for Kelly?

Another excellent piece from the 2 ABC journos Atkinson and Lawson . We rarely get this level of analysis in the media

Where’s all the doomsday profits that kept going on about the Giants dynasty that would destroy the competition? Ahh that’s right they’ve moved onto the swans & id imagine the suns will be next.

They destroyed the competition by taking 3 years worth of the best players and ruined them.

I didnt ever think they would win a flag.

GCS have been worse. The AFL created artificial clubs and wrecked the competition. And now there is talk of more teams not less.

All the talk of Ferrari lists full of super talents has me wondering if GWS have built an entire list of childhood overachievers.

You know, the type who are gifted at a young age and everything comes to them naturally until they're suddenly challenged as an adult and the wheels fall off because they've never had to work hard.

GWS look a smokey for the spoon this year. Can they be bothered putting in the work to beat North? Or will they just wing it and rely on their individual talents to carry them?

It was pretty clear that Leon Cameron was never cut out to be the long term coach for a tilt at a flag. Stagnant game plan, never had a plan b, comes off awkwardly in interviews and press conferences.

But that Amazon documentary really hammers home what a mess of a club GWS is. Players clearly don't respect Cameron and he comes across as weird and unnatural.

Thank god they never won a flag, what a waste of a flag it would have been. Shut them down, cancel all these contracts and in 2 years launch a new 18th team in Tasmania. No one ever asked for a team in western Sydney and no one ever wanted one either.

No club in the history of the game has received more leg ups than GWS and with next to nothing to show or it

The Kelly and Coniglio monster contracts are arguably the two worst in AFL football at present.
They ll be forced to try and unload one of them, for sure.
Problem is , that decision rests with the players , not the club and considering the amount of money on offer for them reckon gws might have a tough time moving either one(or even potential both on).

Got all the hallmarks of another treloar situation

Lots of clubs will do that. Bulldogs ( particularly if dunkley leaves), Melbourne, Carlton ( if make finals this year) would all be attractive if I was Kelly.
