With the signing of so many out of contract players, will we have enough cap room to chase a free agent and if so.....who would you chase and why?

Also wanted to know if the salary cap increased with the new TV rights deal?

Thanks, BTL :thumbsu:

I personally would not care if we are inactive for a few years in the free agency market if it meant keeping our current list together.

Forget free agents, our priority should be spreading the dollars among the existing group. They are a brilliant young group.

I have a suspicion that the last contract we sign this year will front load with the remaining 2013 cap space and 2014 will open up a bit. I reckon we'll chase someone at the end of 2013 when they might be less silly new club money to be thrown around.

No. Unless they come real cheap.

yes the cap is increasing but that will be factored into the clubs budgets. We have no room to attract anyone on good coin from elsewhere without letting players on big coin go.

The idea of free agency, from the AFLs point of view is for players to leave successful clubs and go to weak clubs for more money, not for the good clubs to poach players from the weak.

The AFLPA idea was bastardised in implementation by the AFL.

I'd say the only way we pickup anyone of significance is if we lose players to free agency ourselves. I think there is actually a decent chance of that happening to be honest.

You say it like it's a bad thing. It allows teams like Richmond and Melbourne to not be mired in mediocrity for decades on end. Which is a good thing for the competition. Teams that are intelligent and creative with their payroll will be able to use free agency to their advantage also.

I think you have to look at players from weaker clubs who are unrestricted and who would come to us at a decent cost just to be in a premiership contending team.

So, my list would be;

Matthew Bate
Michael Firrito
Steven Salopek

There really aren't a lot of quality unrestricted free agents that would come to us for a decent price.

The only way we go after a Young, Surjan, Montagna or Jamar is if Cloke leaves, which is looking less likely to occur.

I personally like James Gwilt of the unrestricted's. Think he would be a excellent addition to the backline. He's basically Harry but with fewer flaws in his game.

Spot on!

I know people love Harry alot but this bloke is much more polished skilled wise and is a good running deffender as well. If we got him I would be rapt and it would be an upgrade.
