can now be looked at as a success for Boston?

At the time, it may have hurt Boston chemistry wise as Rondo seemed different afterwards, the team lacked something in the playoffs and relying on the O'Neals was a huge gamble which didn't pay off. However, anyone who remembers February 2011 will remember that the Celtics struggled mightily before the trade deadline. Nate Robinson got hurt, Daniels hurt his neck and was ruled out for the season and his career was in doubt and Delonte West was still hurt. I'm sure there were a few other injuries but I can't remember everything. The Celtics had to make a deal in order to be prepared for Miami.

A team with:

Rondo/injured Nate
Allen/injured Delonte/Wafer
Pierce
KG/Baby
Perk/injured Shaq/injured JO

was not going to cut it against Miami who would've worn Pierce out as the lone small forward and at the time, the Celtics would've been seen as having no chance against the Heat. One can argue that the original roster of that Celtics season had a big shot at the title. They were rolling but injuries derailed them.

Something had to be done. Danny identified Green as someone on the outer kind of at OKC and Perkins as someone that could help OKC but was definitely expendable in Boston with Shaq's injury not seen as serious at the time, Kristic could help and Jermaine O'Neal looked like coming back soon.

Green was traded as a 3/4 that could defend LeBron and allow Pierce to focus on scoring, and give us a better offensive weapon off the bench. Unfortunately, Green struggled to get going and then we know he was ruled out last season with the aorta issue.

Perkins meanwhile has given the Thunder a few good games, but he definitely hasn't proven to be a defensive anchor like the Thunder expected him to be. Ibaka has been much more impactful (even if he is overrated). The Thunder didn't want to approach the luxury tax by resigning Harden, and guess what? If they never signed Perkins, I'm very sure that wouldn't have been an issue.

The Thunder are now left with one lone star after Westbrook went down, and Perkins is only really useful against Dwight Howard. His best skill has always been defending Dwight and it's what earned him minutes in Boston against Orlando. Dwight is already out of the playoffs, and Perkins will be facing the fearsome front court of Gasol and Randolph, Gasol is a unique center.

Green definitely would've helped them now, but that shouldn't be considered when reviewing the deal.

Meanwhile, Green is getting into shape, finding a rhythm for Boston, and has helped them on both ends of the floor in the past few months. It remains yet to be seen if he can keep up his scoring with Rondo back but his defense wouldn't suffer. Next season, with another training camp under his belt, Doc hopefully with a better understanding of how to utilise Green offensively and with another year passing since his surgery (doctor's have said it takes two years to recover, Green has been very good after just a year) Green may become a big weapon for the Celtics if they continue with Garnett and Pierce, but have them with smaller roles.

So who do you think won the trade?

When the trade first happened, it was an OKC win.

Right now and for the future it is definitely a win for the Celtics.

at the time and watching the association, looked like a bad trade for Boston

Now its defiantly a Boston win,but who knows how far Boston would of went?
Not very far, I can't remember that Heat series too well but the team was already falling apart anyway. Big Baby was taking bad shots and getting his teammates angry, Rondo got hurt and even if we got past Miami, Chicago seemed to have our number throughout the late stages of the season.

The Bulls team in the ECF was banged up too. Rose Hurt his Ankle in the 1st round against Indy. Boozer had Turf Toe and didnt play many games with Noah either. Plus we had Bogans:thumbsdown:

opinion.

perk is an offensive liability. i always thought he was vastly overrated. but he was what okc needed so that they could play collison off the pine. his toughness was infectious and allowed westy and kd to attack at will knowing perk would have their backs.

now okc look vulnerable. but its not his fault. the uniforms are also not his fault

green, appropriate name for his situation, played real well in his most recent game. real well. like his game. and had open heart surgery too.

so now boston are out of the playoffs and maybe without kg and pp next season. they will rebuild.

okc should be challenging for wc titles and possibly an nba title soon.

(now say this in Seals voice) - and because of that, im would have to go with okc

Perkins trade was a huge win for Boston when you consider the future, but right now OKC are benefitting from the trade (except for the last playoff series). Although Boston have taken more from that trade, OKC shouldn't really complain with Perkin's toughness.

Huh? Did you miss this season? Perkins is garbage.
I at least 40 of the regular season games and a lot of the playoffs and I thought that he was absolutely rubbish, but he plays with the grit that OKC is missing. Despite the fact that he managed to do less than nothing, I think it's worth keeping Perk until Jones develops or OKC can get another center. He fills a hole.

Don't agree. You could play Collison and get just as much grit.

Perkins is a shell of his former average self.

I'd love to play Collison, we're a much, much better side when he's on the floor but I'm worried that he won't have many big men coming off the bench. I don't exactly trust Thabeet, Perkins and Jones to come in to a game and provide a spark.

I'm going against the grain here and I will vote OKC, not because OKC 'won' but because I think the Celtics lost out massively.

2010-2011 Boston was 2nd in the NBA (behind SA) before trading big Perkins, slipped to third in the East afterward. Whilst I know it isn't that simple (and OP has explained why), his departure had a massive impact.

However I think the biggest loss was last year for the Celtics (2011-2012).

Green out for the season, No big man depth coming off the bench to back up KG, Avery Bradley out for the playoffs and yet Boston almost made it to the NBA finals. Switch Green out for Perkins and well Boston could of had it's beloved 18th title IMO.

Now I don't claim to have an in depth knowledge of basketball, but I think my argument is plausible.

Welcome.

I understand your point about his departure leaving a void, and look it definitely did at the end of the 2011 season but that was only a minor reason in my opinion.

As for 2012, Perkins would've been useless against Miami and their small ball. Don't really see him making a difference.

Jeff Green is quite an attractive young man so man love is easy to form with him.

Perk was one ugly mofo so man love was restricted severely.

Reflecting further on the Eastern Conference finals between Miami V Boston, it was probably the emergence of Rondo's offensive game and LBJ being put off his game for the first 5 games that helped drag it out to game 7, not specifically Perkins but the lack of bench depth really hurt Boston.

Not really related but I've only been following B-Ball since the start of 2010-2011, are there any good online resource that can help explain game plans in more detail (specifically Defenses, zones, offensive plays, ect), help would be much appreciated.

The trade itself didn't hurt us as much as brooks' coaching. His inability to change his coaching style or line ups when the opposition gets on a run has been hurting us for a while now. Too bad he has another 3 years on his contract.
