I'm just about to go to england for four weeks so Merry Christmas everybody (everybodys having fun,
look to the future now,
Its only just begun)

But I'd like to leave one thought

A tiger fan in athread said hurling abuse at the footy is therapy

Iv'e often thought that and most to the people around ignore you or try to return with a wisecrack. Try that in england and you all end up in hospital.

Is this what it's all about ? Is this why the rules are so subjective (and no-one addresses that) it's impossible for the poor old umpire to be 'consistent' as we all keep demanding. This gives us plenty of opportunity to sound off.

Is the umpire the most important one out there ? Should he be making a million bucks per season ?

Merry Christmas Pess!!!!!! Have a good one.

I agree with Pess and Chilli about football being therapeutic.

For me football is most enjoyable when it is a tight tense game with everything at fever pitch. You can focus entirely on the game and can scream out basically anything and no-one really cares. Regardless of whether we win or lose after games like this, I still go home feeling relatively satisfied. (Obviously moreso after a win!)

It does seem a perfectly good, non-violent way to work out some frustrations. Better than kicking the dog!

The banter between opposing supporters is also quite wnjoyable. Round 22 1997, when Richmond played Carlton at Optus Oval was one game that sticks out. I reserved a seat in the Hawthorn Stand, and must have been the only Tiger to do so! This was something that I actually revelled in. The Carlton throng around me were backslapping each other early on as Carlton skipped out to a 7 goal lead in the first quarter, but where gradually subdued as the Tigers clawed our way back.

At one stage in the 3rd Quarter (I think) Kernahan cleaned up a Richmond player (fairly) with a hip and shoulder. You could feel the collective gasp from all those around me as I boomed at the top of my voice "Report that pig!". It was like they were not used to anyone challenging the sanctity of St Stephen for a while.

There was this young boy sitting in front of me. He must have been 5 or 6 years of age. In the last quarter, when it was getting pretty tense with us gradually catching up and with my incessant vocal ranting, it all became a little too much for him and he burst out crying. For a minute I actully felt sorry for him, but then thought serve himself right for being a Carlton supporter! D:

Another memorable day was again at Optus Oval when we knocked of Hawthorn. This was at the time that it was announced that they were intending to merge with the Demons, which was understandably a sensitive topic for them.

I managed to get a position in the standing area on the wing below where the coaches boxes are. Right in front of us, in the seated area behind the fence the Hawthorn cheer squad was located. Did we have fun with this. Not only were we cheering any Richmond effort, but also were helping out with Hawthorns as well! Each Hawthorn goal was met with a hearty rendition of "It's a grand old flag, It's a high flying flag, It's the emblem for you and for me...". This seemed to infuriate the hell out of the Hawthorn punters.

Like I said, non-violent fun and good spirited banter. Something that sets the crowd behaviour apart from other sports such as soccer. Wouldn't have it any other way!
