i remember reading an article about a proposed new stadium over in the soon to build E gate area. it was going to hold 25 to 30 thousand people. to used for the lower crowd drawing teams, western bulldogs, north Melbourne and so on.

does anyone know what the old princess park/ optus oval has become now days? that use to hold around 30 thousand odd and had a few up grades before Carlton moved there home games away from there to the mcg

I think it's just more than time they dropped the entry prices of the ODI matches at the G. Too expensive and they were just lucky that there were so many there supporting Sri Lanka last night, otherwise it would have been a crowd of about 10,000.
This :thumbsu:

With so much cricket and Football now starting, the average Australian can't afford to go to all games. If they have to pick 1, they will go to a game that actually means something.

If i lived in Melbourne, i would love to go to every game of footy, and cricket, but the reality is i wouldn't be able to afford it.

I know you don't have to buy food and drinks at venues, but the reality is - if you go to the G it is unlikely you are not going to want something to eat or drink.

I believe there's a proposal in place with the junction oval getting a major upgrade and the Vic's moving there permanently. Although its probably not big enough for international cricket...

No it really is shithouse. Renegades games had no atmosphere in comparison to same size crowds at the G despite the 'G massive size.
Might have something to do with the Stars having the majority of the support due to Warne.

I wouldn't put that down to Etihad. It has proved to be a very good venue fin regards to atmosphere for the 30,000 - 50,000 range,

This debate has been going on for the last 20 years, over this time the Vics have tried to play shield games at Punt Road, Princes Park & Junction Oval.

The Junction Oval would be the best option for this as they could then have it purely as a cricket ground with no footy. The downside is that the ground needs an enormous amount of work to upgarde it to the necessary level. CV does not have the money for this and the state government is not going to fund it. The major training facilities are at the MCG, which therefore makes no sense to play games elsewhere. CV would want comparable facilities which would mean indoor nets, outdoor nets not on the field, new gym and rooms, upgrade to the grandstand.

Maybe the best option to get the funding required would be for the AFL to chip in. This could then free up the MCG so the season could start sooner as they would then have all Melbourne grounds availble, York Park, Subiaco, Gold Coast, Football Park (although when Adelaide Oval upgrade is complete this because a problem), Olympic Stadium. We would then only be missing SCG, Gabba & Bellerive so footy can have an extra 2 rounds an no bloody NAB Cup.

Nah it had more to do with bay 13 culture. People rock up, pay 10 entry and drink for the first 35 overs then get chucked out (whilst I watched from the 2nd level ;)) no such frivolity at any renegades games.....
