This debate has been going on for the last 20 years, over this time the Vics have tried to play shield games at Punt Road, Princes Park & Junction Oval.
The Junction Oval would be the best option for this as they could then have it purely as a cricket ground with no footy. The downside is that the ground needs an enormous amount of work to upgarde it to the necessary level. CV does not have the money for this and the state government is not going to fund it. The major training facilities are at the MCG, which therefore makes no sense to play games elsewhere. CV would want comparable facilities which would mean indoor nets, outdoor nets not on the field, new gym and rooms, upgrade to the grandstand.
Maybe the best option to get the funding required would be for the AFL to chip in. This could then free up the MCG so the season could start sooner as they would then have all Melbourne grounds availble, York Park, Subiaco, Gold Coast, Football Park (although when Adelaide Oval upgrade is complete this because a problem), Olympic Stadium. We would then only be missing SCG, Gabba & Bellerive so footy can have an extra 2 rounds an no bloody NAB Cup.
