So are cigarettes.
But it's legal to sell them, and I don't see people up in arms about milkbars, servos, pubs, newsagents, and supermarkets selling cigarettes to mothers and fathers who aren't smart enough to give a shit about the risk of cancer and death, yet people get quite upset about pokies and how they ruin families.

Idiots have always, and will always find ways to throw away their money, and in the case of cigarettes they're often throwing their life away too.
That's the whole "guns don't kill people, people with guns kill people" pokies are so prevalent that it makes it easy to destroy people's lives. I'm not calling for pokies to be banned, I'm merely saying though that AFL clubs should show some moral fortitude and wean themselves off pokies, just like I'd oppose Richmond doing a deal with CUB or Winfield (even though it'd be kinda fitting). It's not uncommon for associations to take stands against things which are legal on the grounds that they wield enough power to influence society.

Not up in arms enough, I should've said.
My father was a mechanic (still is - just doesn't have idiot customers any more) and the petrol/shop side of things was a sideline to bring people into the workshop.

A packet of cigs brought in multiples of an entire tank full of petrol. **** - a can of coke brought in more profit than a tank full of petrol.

You don't need to tell me about the moral quandaries of business.

Sorry, yeah, I'm off on a bit of a tangent.

But is the club able to sell on the rights or venues?
The club doesnt own the venues, it could onsell the pokies entitlements it bought itself. I believe Mathieson and his grouip is the owner of the original 300 pokies - since they appear to have transferred to the clubs control from the previous clubs., but the revenue goes to the club. Its kid of complicated.

Hawthorn being Hawthorn, if they rid the income they get from pokies, they will financially rape the members even more by upping the membership prices like they are for 2016 because they didn't sell the blue merchandise and power rangers guersey at a rate they had projected. Members always pay for not reaching financial targets. They're the easiest department to make up for any lost income or target failures.

As someone who is not pokie and doesn't like having to pay for other's mistakes or poor decisions, I am very much in favour of them keeping the Carolina Springs venue open.

Which, to me, makes it a bit of a sly move. "Hey the club will always benefit from the rights we have given them!"

... but can they sell those rights on and get out of pokies?

"Oh. Weeeellll.... How does it benefit the pokies industry if the market shrinks?"

I thought they already had. I keep hearing 'family club' and 'community focused club'. I'm surprised they would taint themselves with fixed game machines that steal from the vulnerable.

Nah, I don't think so, especially since most other clubs haven't. The more money our club makes the better we'll be.

We do a lot of great work in the community.

What is up with Hawk supporters justifying Pokie machines?

All clubs should ditch them, the question is not that Hawthorn should specifically ditch them. But could Hawthorn survive without them? Since they are of course a well run family club, who have just achieved a three peat.
Which is my point. If any club can, they can. It is the right time. They are the strongest they could ever be (except when they clean up next year).

Not sure why any club should ditch the pokies when the AFL have sportsbet hanging of their teat at every add break.
Agree that they are both bad. But there is a difference between gambling on a supposedly equal event and putting money into a machine that was made for large profits.
