Pokies...foreign problem for us in WA. I had no idea AFL clubs profit significantly from gambling. Pretty sad.
You lose your money same as everyone else though. In fact WA has the highest gambling rate of any state. You are just finding other ways particularly lotto, to do your dosh. That's also sad.

Yeah Box Hill isn't either and it is I your supporter Zone, don't want to crap in your own backyard?
The Hawks have poured alot of money into Caroline Springs through their investments there & created many jobs by doing so....Many of the retired middle-class types who live there, are happy about not having to travel to Melbourne, to enjoy a quality life-style venue experience.

Your welcome.:thumbsu:

I'm sure Hawthorn would like to ditch gaming machines, as would geelong and others, but no team is going to put themselves at a disadvantage by not pursuing entirely legal pursuits. And like it or not, gambling money is too big to just take away.

A better solution would be for the AFL to tax gaming profits for all clubs at 75% of profit
Great idea. Pokies revenue propping up AFL clubs' has always been the elephant in the room. With TV rights being how they are, now's the time to start reducing the incentive for clubs to take advantage of society's most unfortunate.

So are cigarettes.
But it's legal to sell them, and I don't see people up in arms about milkbars, servos, pubs, newsagents, and supermarkets selling cigarettes to mothers and fathers who aren't smart enough to give a shit about the risk of cancer and death, yet people get quite upset about pokies and how they ruin families.

Idiots have always, and will always find ways to throw away their money, and in the case of cigarettes they're often throwing their life away too.
That's a tremendously stupid post, even by your standards.

Lol the Hawks are still reliant on selling home games, the afl and tax payers hand outs!

So no they still need that gaming money
Do you know the meaning of a major sponsor? If we didn't so call "sell home games" we would have another sponsor step in and give us equal to the current deal.

I didn't realise cigarette companies were sponsoring AFL teams.
How much cash did AFL clubs earn from tobacco sponsorship last year?

Because they're both legal..
He's point was that people will do it anyway.
But hey, if you insist that the Hawks supporter base is so small and uncommitted and offers such pitiful support that the club needs to rely on plundering gambling addicted pensioners to survive, I won't argue with you.
Just makes a mockery of the club propaganda that it is a family club with a large supporter base.
I knew those membership numbers were fake.

Reading between the lines, I think Chief was trying to suggest that if anyone was in a position to ditch them, that it is Hawthorn, and that as the family club, perhaps it would behoove us to attempt to show some leadership on this issue.

I agree. Although I may well be agreeing with myself since I had to read in a fair bit, but I think that's what Chief was going for.

Have no issue with Hawthorn running Pokies.

Gambling is a choice. Don't want to lose your money, don't gamble.

But then I'm all for personal responsibility.

The discussion shouldn't be about whether Hawthorn can give up the pokies or should give up the pokies. Talk about how you get the AFL to wean itself off gambling sponsorship and advertising and helping the clubs to be self sufficient without it.

Yeah, but I'm not sure that the West Coast Eagles or Fremantle Football Club profit from gambling...that was my point.

Why people feel the need to turn this into an us v them thing is beyond me. I resent the majority of tools in this state too - so blind, ignorant and conservative on the most part - but I suspect that pertains to most Australians.
