With a few notable exceptions, Saturday footy is no longer a thing.

As part of their TV rights deal, Kayo and Foxtel want exclusive matches.

But is there another option?

Back in the day, Seven used to regularly do delayed telecasts of matches. And the delay telecast has long been part of cricket.

Could the Saturday and Sunday matches be shown live on Fox Sports and Kayo, and on a delayed telecast on FTA?

Being able to watch the games live would be a good incentive for people to shell out for pay TV.

Meanwhile, FTA viewers can still watch every game, albeit with a delay.

And the Thursday snx Friday night games would continue to be shown live on Seven.

Sounds like s win to me?

I would expect Fox wanting to be compensated a motza by the AFL to give up Saturday exclusivity.

Can't see the AFL giving in to what seems popular demand.

Once they have the $$$$, that's it.

you would need to have a delay of no more than 1 hour for it to be worthwhile on FTA.

When we had them, the delay was ok. Sure there was the radio, etc but it was normal to have the delay and we were all cool with it.

But we've had live against the gate for so long now I don't think it's something you can go back to.

I remember they had replays a few years back. I was watching one game which was anyone's game at 3/4 time, and went to an adds break. Foolishly I switched stations. World of Sports was on, and they gave the final score.

I had a mate who lived on Lennox st in Richmond. Would try and watch and sure enough around 5 min in to the last quarter would hear people in the streets singing the theme song.
