I don't see anything wrong with trolls.. I find them amusing. The trolling rule should be relaxed a lil..within reason of course re. Its football not croquet.

I find it ironic that supporters of the clown college masquerading as the Brisbane FC can't take a joke or a proverbial pie in the face.

Giving a damn about any opposition criticism of Collingwood smacks of insecurity. They can say whatever they like short of flat out moronic abuse and even that is like a face tattoo - you need a mirror to see it. When I first saw the carlton board's policy of banning opposition supporters for mass "liking" of negative comments I physically laughed out loud and even if it's just to be completely opposite to that mentality I welcome trolling. It's a moron filter.

Trolls exist because people get trolled. Got to be some order on a board but that is the job of monitors. Best way for posters to deal with trolls is not respond. I don't get the angst, supporting Collingwood has always been dealing about trolls for me since I was in primary school. Part of the fun and what being a supporter is all about.

By my definition these days a troll is someone who tries to cause pain, embarrassment, discomfort, confusion, fear, loathing....and all from a safe distance invisibly behind a computer keyboard.
In days gone by I think we'd have called them a coward.
Should Pies people call them out or complain about their antics? Yeah I think we should. Again, in days gone by if a bloke was sprouting rubbish and trying to incite us because we were Pies supporters...he'd be sorted out. Not too many people would troll if that friendly punch in the nose still existed (can anyone design an app for that?).
Pies people can debate, we can have opinions, we can shake the MCG when we're in full cry. But there's nothing that says someone should be able to hide behind a veil of impunity and chuck hand grenades just because technology allows them to.

What if your someone who dishes it out behind a PC but would honestly and happily dish it out to their faces as well? Is that okay? Because their is a special breed of people out there who will do both with comfort.
------------------------------------------------------------------

On the note of the thread though. I was just recently banned for 1 day from all of BF for posting comments on how i think the future of the Brisbane Football Club looks to me, it was a friendly forum until i posted in a friendly manner, no intention to cause anyone distress and BAM.. Because i wrote about what i perceive to be a cultural problem at Brisbane i was banned without remorse. When i wrote to the Brisbane Mod who did so, He didn't even have the dignity to reply.

Now clearly moderators are also club fans. But, truly.. Are magpies fans the only people who can take a whack on the chin? The amount of times I get annoyed by people claiming that Collingwood gets everything easy, i just can't help to want to scream.

At least as they say on South Park, I will always have my SafeSpace in BF Collingwood Boards.

Did you do it on the Brisbane board or main board?

In all seriousness. There is trolling in various stages. Your example is the extreme version. There are some keyboard warriors that are so detached from any emotion, they are beyond cowards. Here on the footy forums, a very mild version although with some scandals, some fall the above category( AFL players drink driving/ drugs / rape allegations).
What we find here is mild nuisance category when you can't have a decent discussion about something Collingwood without some opposition trying to bait us with the usual stuff.
If it gets out of hand, we got mods for that but I rather see them spending their time on better things.
Last but not least, it is us against them. It is a siege mentality that some people might not like but it is the landscape. People don't like our club ( understatement of the year ) and some go out of their way to show that. Too bad for them, it just shows how sad they are. I laugh at their efforts, some are quite good even but it only gives me reason to return the favor. Maybe because I am Dutch, I am used to the usual banter. People take the p!$$ out of us with everything . Can't escape that, it is part of me and proud for it. For you life long supporters out there being a MagPie is probably the same thing.

Pica....I was brought up at Viccy Park, Windy Hill, Moorabbin, Princess park....(you get my drift)....I'm used to banter. Trolling is not banter...it's designed to stir someone up, to upset them. Being brought up when I was (and how) I'm used to being honest and standing up for the rights of people who perhaps cannot do so for themselves. Trolls do not exist in society (despite Happy red thinking psychopaths are trolls) so they are simply people who get off on the idea of upsetting others without consequence to their own personal safety (cowards)

Banter away folks....that's all good fun. But when you design to upset or to debase someone else without their opportunity to defend themselves openly (as in for real) then its all just wind. A foul smelling wind.

Whenever I picture a Collingwood fan, I think of a small kid in the 1920s wearing a cap - you know the big ones like the baggy green. And he's a smartarse. He can take anything that the Toffs from Carlton can dish out to him and he can give it back in spades.

And I think of the guy in the outer - in the Rush stand - sitting among the visiting fans and listening to their various rants ..... and then following up with smartarse comments that take the piss.

To me, Collingwood fans can dish it out but they can take it too. There's no question that it's open season on Magpie fans on the main board where every other team's fans dumps on them and most of the moderators ban Magpie posters at the drop of a hat.

Even though I've been banned for a number of BF no-nos, I've never thought seeking out protection from the moderators. In the past, I've been told that I wasn't liked and there's been endless accusations of trolling but none of it has killed me. I see all the posts as part of the rich tapestry that is BF.

In fact, I go further. I would feel less of a magpie fan if I didnt take comments from opposition supporters on the chin. As far as I'm concerned, let em have a go. Isnt that what it means to be a Pie supporter. I tend to wince a bit when outsiders get accused of trolling when they post on the Magpie forum. As far as I'm concerned, being despicable human beings is a part of their lot in life. It's like complaining when a shark bites off your leg. It's what sharks do. I get more unnerved if opposition fans are actually polite and open-minded.
100% agree. There once once a time when the Collingwood club embodied the suburb. Tough, resilient and unwilling to yield to those who thought they were better. We didn't appeal to authority because we were too busy battling it. We were combative and enjoyed the fight because we had an arrogance that comes from working your way into the contest from the back markers.

The suburb has long since been gentrified, the club corporatised, the working class population a disporia, but our pride endures in our supporter base and the team culture that has passed from one generation of players to the next. We don't shy from the contest and we certainly don't seek protection from it. We are the smatarse kid in the 1920s baggy cap, happy to cop the flak and dish it out, because that's what comes when you wear the black and white.

Could you explain the difference between banter and trolling? I understand banter might be "well you lost the last game against us and I dont think you've improved...".... is that banter?

What is trolling? As someone who sees the difference, I'm genuinely interested in your reply...

well i dont want to hang it on robroy.... maybe i'm going to troll now.... but I would feel a little weak if I started complaining about trolls. I have to admit that I'm a little shocked when someone posts a message calling me something unflattering....but I forget it in 5 minutes. If someone has a go at one of my posts, I return the favour...

I mean... as robroy says, people are behind their keyboards posting crap.... it's not like real life.... they are using names that are borderline childish ...lol.... its a fantasy world isnt it?

100% agree. Where other see trolls, I see divergence, sometimes provocative, occasionally humorous, mostly entertaining and at the very worst, red-card worthy. They are an integral part of the rich tapestry of cyber-space life. Trolls are to be revered not reviled!
