Opinion Is Jack Macrae Overrated?

So some of the rebuttals I've seen are that his an All Australian, Premiership Player, Superstar, would be north's best player (he wouldn't) etc.

If he's as good as those who have claimed....why doesn't he attention from opposition players.

Do you lot know something that the other clubs don't?

I mean what would they know :/
So which North player exactly is better than Jack Macrae?

The bloke is a Premiership player and 2 x AA (so far) at the age of 26. He's on track for another AA and a crack for another finals series, finished equal 5th and out right 8th in the last two Brownlow medal counts. I think Jack is rated pretty well by those who matter and should be pleased with his career to date.

The OP might not be as salty if Garner, Jacobs or Wood had half as good a career as Macrae from the same draft.

Do you mean like the attention Richmond gave him by sitting on his immediate left shoulder all night? Massive part of stopping us and very well done by Richmond.

No if you want overrated look at Brandan Parfitt but that would mean someone would have to actually rate him to begin with.

was listening to triple m's call of friday nights game, they mentioned that macrae and libba had 32 touches combined in the first half when richmonds pressure was at 174 or so, the third quarter where tigers kicked 5.2 to 1.1 to turn the game around and had 203 or so pressure rating for the quarter, macrae and libba had 5 touches combined. make of it what you will

Mcrae had it 30+ times against Richmond, not sure we sat on anyone. When you are an outside(ish) player like Mcrae, you get sat on by Richmond regardless of who you are due to the pressure they put on those players. Often concede first possession, especially to someone like Libba who is such a good ball winner, pressure the receiver. Richmond have been doing it for years.

Anyone saying that Macrae lacks hurt factor hasn't been watching him play.

He's been our best player and best user of the ball by far this year. His kicking is sublime.

I think because he isn't a huge kick of the ball people think he isn't a good kick but he rarely misses a target and his vision and kicks inside 50 are one of the main reasons our forward line has been functioning as well as it has this year.

He doesn't have the power or evasion to get out of congestion which probably means that he isn't noticed as much but his ability to use his hands to release to a team mate in space is just as valuable.

Been better than Bont this season.

Not entirely convinced that's true, Bont usually attracts more attention for a start.

I'd much rather see Macrae rack up 30 possession than Bontempelli as well.

Macrae has been very good this season, more damaging than he has in the past, but I still believe you'd much rather the ball getting to Macrae than Bontempelli if you're the opposition coach.

It's been pretty obvious if you watch every Bulldogs game. Macrae has comfortably been our best player this season.
Yes Bont gets more attention, yes you would rather a 10/10 Bont game over a 10/10 Macrae game, and yes Bont is an overall better player, but you can only judge actual performance, not "if Bont didn't get that much attention he'd be better", and in actual performance Macrae has had the better year to date.

Everyone lauds our fast, open, attractive style of play, and Macrae (and Libba) is basically the cornerstone of it. The amount of play he sets up by getting the ball and waiting until he actually takes a hit to allow his teammates more space is enormous. People love to talk down ball magnet type players as not damaging but I don't agree that Macrae fits that bill. Does a huge amount of work for us both ways. He's a genuinely great mid both on the inside and outside.

Definitely has been better than Bont. Macraes output has been more consistent and his kicking has been better. Bonts kicking has been inconsistent and he often miss kicks trying to spear every pass.

Agree that Macrae's work beyond racking up disposals is underrated; he gets the disposals because he works hard both ways. The problem is that media are rating him because "er ma gawd look how many disposals he gets!" which misses what he's doing that helps the team, and undersells that his actual ball use this year has been much more damaging.

Macrae has been going at ~477m gained / game, whilst Bont is still up at 580m gained / game. So Bont is still getting the ball going forward a lot, along with sitting second in the league for inside 50's and is good for a bit over a goal a game, which is the (equal) best of all the midfielders going around.

I don't think you'll find a Bulldogs supporter (or anyone thats watched all our games) argue that Macrae isnt having a better season that Bont. He just is.
