I'm thinking long term, rather than the 'Pagan styled quick fix' approach... which we all known doesn't work. I'd rather we build for a Premiership team that can win multiple rather than a strong finals contender who is always there abouts (Collingwood) but rarely win.
I love fev like all of us but I want our club to remain strong for a long period of time rather than make a Grand Final only to be beaten by that other team, whom may have taken longer to build than us, but had the better team at the end of the day because they made those tough calls years ago, ala Hawthorn.
I'm a realist and we still have a ways to go. Our backline needs time to develop and so too our rucks. Realistically, do you think the players in our best 22 now will be the calibre of Geelongs 2007 team in 2-3 years time?
It's all good sticking up for our club and players but there comes a time when we need to take off the navy blue glasses and compare ourselves against the best, which ultimately is what we all want the Blues to be.
Did you attend the Round 2, 2004 clash between Carlton & Geelong? That was the day when a team of AFL journeyman (Carlton) spanked Geelong by 54 points (the Geelong team contained 11 players who would be members of the 2007 premiership team), a week after St Kilda had spanked them by 61 points. If you did attend that game, after leaving the ground that day, did you for a moment think the same team that had just been humiliated by 2003's 15th placed team would, 3 years later, dominate the home & away season & then win a GF by 119 points? Particularly after a further 3 weeks which saw Geelong sitting on 1 win & 4 losses, with some supporters trying to put together an alternative board & getting the knives out for 'Bomber' Thompson.

I am not saying Carlton will emulate Geelong's effort in 2007, but it doesn't take all that long for a talented group of players to become successful, on the back of some confidence & self belief.

Hawthorn are another example of a team that quickly turned it around. From Round 6 - Round 18, 2006, Hawthorn won only 1 game. That equates to 12 losses out of 13, yet just over a year later they were playing finals. Almost overnight, players like Sewell, Roughead, Campbell, Taylor, Lewis, Ladson, Young etc gained some confidence & self belief & here we are less than 2 years later & everyone is talking up the Round 17 clash between Geelong & Hawthorn as the biggest clash of the season. I don't think even the most one-eyed Hawthorn supporter would have seen this coming.

Yet last year people were calling for his head!
thats coz last year his head disappeared up his own arse...

I think that we just wanted to make sure that it was still there...

As for the OP's question... no ____ing way should we trade Fev at this point in time for anyone.

If he kicks 120 goals this year, then he deserves a 4 year contract to see out his career. Because, he will kick a ton next year as well as our midfield gets better.

Are we seriously even debating this?
Totally agree Doza!:thumbsu:

Fevola is part of the Carlton fabric....It is not all about his ability to kick goals, his name is a huge marketing tool for the club....he is a face to much of what they do to market the club!

For all his indescretions he has been a player that has also given us just as much to cheer about with his great on field performances.

Going to the football to watch Carlton without Fevola would not only rob us of winning games, but it would be down right boring!

Also how would the club be showing loyalty to our other players coming through the ranks if we pawned him off.............and all for the sake of a 'maybe' player from a top pick in the draft....the risk outweighs the probability for mine!

You would not blame other players to start looking outside the club if they saw one of the best players treated like a piece of shit!

If he stuffs up again, fair enough.......but Carlton need Fev just as much as Fev needs Carlton.

And if you take Gibbs word that Fev convinced him to stay put and re-sign you can see that his ability to communicate with our 'future' stars is paramount to the club going forward as well!

Fev=Carlton!:thumbsu:

Stevens' time is past, that was two years ago.

Note: I am NOT saying we should have traded him two years ago (heck he was practically our whole midfield!), I am saying if we wanted to make a call on it the time was 2 years ago.

Fevola's time (to make a call on him) is now. He is playing top footy, if you want to maximise your return then this is time whilst Stevens' time is gone. No one is going to pay top dollar for him now coming off a serious neck injury and not playing career best football.
Thats not my point based on what you are saying......Stevens may as well not be played, we should be blooding a young bloke who is going to be there for the long haul if Stevens is not.....on your judgement Stevens must be holding up where we are heading as a club as well.

You want some unknown high draft pick to came in to replace Fev, because he won't be around when our 'flag' window is open, so Stevens position in the team may as well be taken up by a youngster so that we can educate him.........very irrational logic yours........and for mine it sends all the wrong messages from the club to our young list of players!

I agree, but the FF is not the only player. It's worring me that we are always looking for fevola when we enter the forward 50. It's for a good reason because he is so strong and such an accurate kick. But somehow or another we have to get our selves to the stage where we are totally "unpredictabe" who we are going to kick it to in the forward 50. This can only come about in the future if we start now. That's why I would like to see Wiggins at FF and Fevola at CHF.
Fev could create havoc at CHF and Wiggins (believe it or not) is a very fast lead and as strong as Fev overhead.
The Bulldogs have Johnson in that type of role. Also by having some smaller strong players in the forward 50 gives us more chance of holding the ball in the 50 meter arc.
....and that would take away one of fev's greatest strengths....his goal-kicking ability.....he would be taking too many marks too far out to score......remember he is a fast lead and his kicking allows him to lead out to just beyond the 50 metre arc........as for Wiggins he will be gone at year's end plus is not a reliable kick on goal.

It's a very good question. It depends. Will Fev be there when we win our next premiership? Thats around 5 years away, Fev will be close to finishing by then.
Do we trade him and draft an 18 year old tall who by then will be a primed 22-23 who can grow with the current list of young players we have coming thru and maybe win us a few more?

This would only work if there was a team who thinks they're close to a flag and can still accomodate us with a high top 8 pick.. also providing there are good key talls in the draft. We have mids so don't need any more of those.
FFS this crap talk about getting a high draft number for Fev is so frustrating......it does not guarantee a certain kind of player whatsoever......most clubs in our position that have high picks mostly want KPP's.....all we really get is a number in a lotto draw...surely Fev is worth more than that.

As for getting one of these high picks, what club down the ladder would want a three to four year player when realistically they are further from a flag than us!

A club higher up the ladder would need to give us a pick plus a player, but do you think they are going to give up a gun.....it is all so stupid this whole thread you really wonder about supporters of this club at times!

BIG BUMP!

Interesting to see the outrage from all circles when this was floated about a couple of months ago. How many of these people are the same ones calling for Fev's head after last night?

I have noticed a couple of familiar names, they know who they are

Sign him and then trade him to GC17 when they enter and we will get higher than market worth and get the best years from him. Win / Win.
