Do records speak for themselves.
Yes his record was very good, long string of final aperances and 2 grand final wins.

But
Did he under achieve eagles during the 90's.
91 grand final apperance with a young dominating side that had the competition at there feet.
In hind sight they should have dominated for allot longer than they did.A team that in my opinion could challenge and defeat the Essendon of today. And ten years from now how many Flags will the Dons possess with there youthful team, anywhere from 3 to 5.Im predicting a minimum of 3.
Malthouse had the likes of Matera,Sumich,Worsfold,Jackovich,White,Kemp,Mainwaring,Brenan,Mcintosh,McKenna and so on.
One of the greatest backlines ever seen with a powerhouse mid field to boot.Un beatable at home, yet why only the 2 premirships early on when these players were still young.

Questions that have to be asked are
Did he bring out the teams potential?
Were they as good as the could have been?

or
Was he merely in the right place at the right time?

Bottom 2 finish with the Pies.

Does he deserve his name in the same breath as Pagan and Sheedy.

In a word, Yes.

But they have an exact replacement in Ken Judge

Malthouse himself blames all the trevel for the early end to weagles star players' careers

But If Sav Rocca turns out to be a huge success at North it should be a big embarrasment to the collingwood Coaching staff

Ie Pagan did it but Malthouse didn't

No Malthouse isn't overrated. He did a pretty good job with the Dogs and did great things with the Eagles in the early 90s even if they were as boring as batsh!t. It's too early to judge him with the woods yet.

It would be great to see him develop a sense of humour though.

This has been a pet topic of mine for acouple of years now. I think that Malthouse did a poor job even at Footscray in the eighties. He had a very good list of players at the Bulldogs which underachieved. One finals appearence in seven years was a poor return for a team that contained players like Hawkins, Purser, Royal, McGuiness, Beasley, Hardie, Foster, Sewell, Kennedy, and Wallis. His attitude to Beasley was puzzling and the preference given to players like Tim Gepp was frustrating. Interestinly since he left the doggies we have made the finals Eight times in eleven seasons-we finished last in his last season.

Having said that, the Collingwood coaching job is the one that will decide how good he is.

Mick does have a sense of humour, and a very good one at that. It's just not often on public display. But other than Sheeds, and maybe Matthews, which senior coaches really do show a good sense of humour? (Mark Wiliams lame attempts don't count) Guess it's not part of the job description.

Mick is slightly overated. But he was exactly what we needed at that time. He lifted us from a mediochre(sp?) team with a heap of young talent, to one of the most professional and financially stable AFL clubs. I dont think that just any old coach could have done that.

I'd have him back any day....

Id have him back too if my only other option was Ken Judge!!

Mick = too defensive, too cautious for mine. Just my humble little opinion, but I reckon Blighty could have won 4 or 5 flags with the list the Eagles had through the first half of the 90s.

No he is not overrated at all.
I know how much is respected by many of the players at the eagles. You only had to be at the Club Champion Awards of 1999 to see the emotion when the farewell to Mick was in progress.

You could say the same thing about Sheedy.

4 wins from 20 years with the talent he has had is just okay. Though on the plus side you could argue he's had lots of 2nds, 3rds, 4ths and hardly missed the finals - and been unlucky with injury... depends on how you argue it.

I do think Mick is overrated though...

The Eagles were a rabble before MM. He brought proffessionalism to the club. Yes he was defensive, but the best buildings have strong foundations and a teams defence is their foundation.
10 finals in a row, 2 flags and maybe more if the home final games were not forced to the MCG. He is a legend in WA and will probably never be surpassed.

Sandie, How can you say to anyone 'get cancer and die'? And BJ, how can you laugh?

YOUS ARE ALL MORONIC SOMETIMES I MEAN THE GUY WOULD HAVE TO BE AMONGST THE TOP 3 COACHES IN THE COMPETITION,BUT I DISMISS ALL OF YOUR IDIOTIC REPLIES,CAUSE I JUST PUT IT DOWN TO JEALOUSY,AND MORE ANTI COLLINGWOOD CRAP.

I get up in the evening and i ain't got nothing to say,I come home in the morning,I go to bed feeling the same way,I ain't nothing but tired,Man i'm just tired and bored with myself,Hey there baby,I could use just a little help.

How stupid to say Mick Malthouse is overated. He won 2 premierships with West Coast. Can you name a coach who won more than 2 premierships in the 90's?. No matter how good a side is they are never going to win the premiership every season. There is another 15 clubs in the AFL trying to win a premiership as well.

Also you cant say Essendon will win 3-5 flags in the next 10 years. You just don't know what will happen in that time. Didn't they say the same about Essendon in 93?. Well it took them 7 seasons to win their next flag.

Malthouse was the first coach to win a premiership with an interstate team. It's ok to say Pagan and Sheedy are better but they got the advantage of playing the GF in their home state, they didn't have to travel from the other side of the country to do it.

No this is different.
Essendon barring injuries will win 3 to 5 premireships and people will look back regareding them to be one of the greatest teams.
Malthouse had a good run with injuries and had everything going his way. There success came at the beggining, and should have continued.Have a look at there list at the end of 94 and the age of the players. They should have dominated for allot longer than they did.
Teams that won more than 2 premireships
Adelaide:Nothing on this team, proved what happens if you hit a purple patch at the right time of the year
North:Strong backline, not as strong as Jackovich,Mckenna,Brennan,Worsfold and so one.Mid field wise again not as strong as the eagles.

Your right i dont know what will happen in the next few years. But if the dons get a injury free run like the eagles, expect to see them dominate.

Yes I realise the home state advantage, and yes it did play a its role. But there home games also played a role as well.

He underachieved at the ealges.
Credit should be given where credit is due.His recruiting will be unsurpassed,to get the quality of Kemp and Heady at the end of the draft stands for itself.

MM @ Collingwood

If they can actually recruit good players he might be able to demonstrate advanced coaching skills again rather than teaching a course in "remedial footy 101"

Where would West coast have been if they didn't get geelong twice in the GF ?

Look at Melbourne They made the GF twice in the last decade or so but came up against two of the strongest teams ever

Melbourne are the new Geelong (but possibly worse) - it's not as if the Dees got close in either of the GFs they were involved in the last 15 years.

Geelong happened to run into the Hawks of 89 as well as the mighty Blues of 95 as well as the Eagles sides.

I bet you hope Drummy underachieves in the next ten years like Malthouse. Look at the concessions and players that Freo have had!
And wont you be sick if Freo gets to the finals this year, wins the first game in Melbourne and then gets told you cant have the next final at home because of a contract with the MCG.

ps Eagles have always had above average injuries, travel takes it's toll. Essendons season last year was a dream with injuries and hardly any interstate games. There is a correlation there.
