Is Maxwell talking about GWS or Collingwood?

This is a well considered response and you make some excellent points, many of which I agree with. In the end I think we are coming from different ends but arriving at the same place.

Agree its an issue across society but, whether the players as individuals want it to be part of the job or not, the AFL is a high profile industry in the public domain, its image and the image of its players not only reflects society at large they also influences it. Kids grow up wanting to emulate their real life heroes. Players are happy enough to reap the financial rewards that come with being a public figure and they should then be prepared to accept the responsibilities that go with it. The rewards are high for the stars of the game, not taking the illegal substances everyone else is doing should not be considered too high a price to pay.

No doubt their will be Swans supporters at the game today calling our players druggies or some such trying to get under our skin and no doubt there will be Collingwood parents there with their children, wishing they didn't have to hear it.

You simply can't tolerate your staff taking illegal drugs if you are aware of it and you have to send a strong message given the high public profile of the industry that it will not be tolerated, off season or not. Penalties need to be harsh enough deterrents, whilst not career ending the first time and its a given that they get counseling and support.

I make the point that one of the reasons this is such a problem for the AFL is that the penalties are simply not a deterrent, they are not harsh enough. Basically, players don't need to pull their heads in until they get caught.

An aside, what if one of the players who tested positive was Keeffe or J Thomas?

Yeah the role-model issue is a really unfortunate one. Being a good AFL footballer shouldn't make you a role-model for anything other than your training and playing, but unfortunately it does in our society. And the Clubs and the AFL are fuelling this by the way the promote the game through highlighting and focussing on stars and then extending coverage and spin to portray the players as bastions of virtue. Ultimately though, they are entertainers. Their bloated pay packets are the result of enormous ratings and enormous crowds. I really don't see why they should be barred from earning a living due to recreational drug use, when no other entertainers and no other professions are bound by this. unless arrested by the police. And frankly, if we do want to draw a the line in the sand regarding the social behaviour of footballers, why choose drugs.

I personally love watching Marley Williams play footy, but if we are to ban players for off-season recreational drug use, he should have got a bare minimum of 2 years for his off-field social behaviour. As serious assault is infinitely more of a concern than smoking a joint or snorting a line.

Ultimately though, let's stop caring about the personal lives of footballers and just enjoy the entertainment that they give us.

See, I don't buy the 'its unfortunate that they have to also be role models' line, they know this is the case from the very start, it goes with the territory. The potential rewards on a personal level are now in the millions of dollars and the days of being a great athlete and a dickhead bloke are long gone.

I personally don't care about the personal lives of players, don't know any personally, I only ever really give a damn when their behavior has the potential to have a positive or negative impact on society and more specifically, on the children and young adults who look up to them and are highly likely to follow the examples they set.

Are you willing to throw out your stones CDs? I'm not.

If a child has to rely on a footballer as a role model the must have shit parents

On tonight's performance...absolutely.

Who said it was just on their holidays? It's well known these guys are clubbing on drugs during the year...I've seen it personally.
What drugs do you think they are on?

I'm interested in this one because the widely accepted rumour mill has players doing coke. The thing is that you can't tell by looking at someone if they're doing coke apart from the sniffing so it doesn't make much sense with all these posters saying they saw them on drugs. Mind you, I'm not saying that they aren't doing coke just that I don't think you'd know unless you saw them in the toilet cubicle.

If they are stumbling around glassy eyed and off their heads it would be more likely pingers or just alcohol.

Role model I don't think so but do they look up to them? Definitely.

My oldest son (7) loves Swanny and my other son (6) loves Elliot. My daughter (5) hates footy but also loves Elliot and Justin Bieber .

My point is don't blame the parents on this one.........I idolised Daicos growing up (still do )

Now that I have grown up and know stuff about our players the only thing I care about is the Jumper.
It has made me a little desensitised and cold about this drug issue at our Club.

Doesn't mean I will stop my kids from being kids........that would just make me a shit parent.

Have you no ****ing idea?
How many kids have posters of their sporting idols? How many kids now buy Under Armour because of Steph Curry, like kids in the 80's bought Nikes because of Jordan?
It doesn't matter what type of parents the kids have, they will always look to famous sporting people, musicians, actors etc.
They are role models, it's the unwritten clause in their contract.

My favourite sporting idol was Tarrant yet I don't get drunk and moon people in bars because I was taught it was wrong from my parents

You missed my point a little.

My two boys have been watching the news. They would like to know if their two "footballing" idols are on drugs?

Hypothetical here Seedsfan

If Treloar for arguments sake sent a picture over the summer of himself doing lines (ala Carlisle) and it got out you would be OK with that?
I wouldn't give two shits.

I'd be thinking a dick thing to allow your photo to get taken but as long as he is killing it on the field, zero cares what he's doing in the off season.

Trouble with this theory is that illicit drugs in that age group is almost certainly a bigger problem outside the AFL rather than inside. AFL have stuffed themselves completely by getting involved in this issue. Wish they would just back off and just test for PEDs. That's their domain and they should stop trying to be the moral police in this issue.

He direct messaged me after seeing a comment I made on a Herald Sun Facebook post about the 2 of them. I told him to grow up and concentrate on his football and the fact he got a 2nd chance means he owes the club and its supporters. He proceeded to then call me a hypocrite for calling him out and named 7 other players that he said I'd be a hypocrite for supporting. He back stabbed those blokes, threw them under a bus whatever you want to call it. All 7 are playing tonight.
He also called me a few choice names, campaigner being one of them.
The blokes a moron, doesn't deserve to play for a club I've financially supported as a member for 20 years.
That's actually interesting.

A stupid thing to do. Do you have evidence of this? Is it from his verified account?

"No sons, they are not on drugs. They work very hard at being professional footballers and train for hours almost every day. What you heard is that some footballers take illegal drugs in the off season, when they're on holiday. Unfortunately, this activity (taking drugs) is illegal and footballers are like all humans and occasionally make mistakes.

But sons, being good footballers is what makes them great. They work hard and train a lot and this is what you should do, if you want to wear the black and white like them."

If it was just the of season like you I wouldn't give a f...k.

It's not hence my emotion on this topic.

You're spot on....ecstasy is/was the big one....coke and meth are the big ones now.

I have mates who played AFL and /or were on AFL lists and drugs are absolutely rife...Alcohol is no longer a problem!

I know of high profile players and ex-players (now commentators) who have been in the same room as my friends partaking in illicit drugs.

My sources are personal very very close friends, not random people I met once at a bar.

I won't name names, but the names I have are very high profile.

Yes I do.
I had no idea he was reading a news article about himself on F/B, reading my and others comments, then decided he didn't like it and direct messaged me telling me so. Obviously I had a look at the profile and saw enough of the pictures, shared posts and friends lists to now it was really him and not an imposter.
I have no doubt there are AFL footballers on here that read these forums, a lot would've read this one.

I've no doubt either. There is evidence of (at least) three players that posted on here prior to being drafted. I'm a teacher and an ex-student of mine who is now an AFL player used to post on here. He doesn't anymore and stopped when drafted (or changed names). Pretty sure his club would have been pushing this.

So, I'm amazed that someone would be that stupid. Seriously. Whilst I probably don't agree with your stance on drugs, I agree with you that the guy is pretty lucky to be rookied and given a second chance.

To put something in writing on the net is beyond stupid.

You over estimate the intelligence of footballers I am afraid!

few years back there was a young fella drafted to Richmond, club moves him from bush to Melbourne, puts himself straight on a dating site, lists his profession as richmond footballer and pits his salary up on the site hahahaha -club had a few words to him
