Opinion Is Mayne too selfless?

Play your way in, play your way out.

Think 1 goal between two forwards in the last 2 games is a good definition of playing your way out.

From reports I don't think Duffy, Tabs and Clarke could do too much more to play themselves in.

For those who think it would be nuts to drop both Mayne and Ballas, if you had to drop one of them which one would it be?

I'd be happy to drop both providing we had better players to replace them with. I'm not sure that we do though.

Maybe Weller could provide as much as Balla but I doubt Duffy could. Duffy would probably kick a goal or two providing he has his kicking boots on (which is rare) but he wouldn't provide anywhere near the forward pressure that Balla does. And regardless of the views of most on this board, forward pressure is crucial to our success (or any team for that matter). Grey is looking good and is more rounded than Duffy, so I'd consider him for sure.

Replacing Mayne is harder. He's actually not playing that badly so if you're going to drop him it'd need to be for someone bloody good. Tabs is probably the only option but it'd only be structural because Mayne is a better player.

I actually think Freo's small and medium forwards could cheat ahead of the ball a bit more. Breust does it for Hawthorn and Cripps does it for West Coast. Now I reckon the latter will be found out to be the front running squib we know he is (as well as Hill, Lecras, Gaff, Masten, Shuey, just about everyone they have ahead of the ball aside from Kenendy and Darling) but it would be nice if Ballantyne and Mayne used the ample space Freo sets up ahead of the play to their advantage.

Whats the difference between MDB and Mayne? MDB is the better player, we may as well play him in Maynes position.

We could do with an extra midfielder as Mayne doesn't score enough and his 'pressure acts' is very inconsistent.

People saying to drop Mayne is a tad harsh. I think he brings a lot to the team in terms of pressure. However I don't know if he and MDB can play in the same 22 without Mayne having 1-2+goals added. If he's not kicking goals then we can get the same from MDB. I would still have Mayne in the 22 though, maybe rotate him through the mids every now and then?

Mayne is in the fortunate position of not having a ready replacement. As others have said replacement would involve a structural change and whilst Tabs has the tank to play the mobile forward role he does that still leaves us with a need for another forward. This would be either a third ruck (assuming that there are already Sandi +1 in the team), Moller or Hannath (Apeness being injured is not for consideration). Whilst I think that Moller and Hannath are both improving (yes I was at the peel game) I would not think that either of them would make the team better than it is with Mayne.
Alternatively we could go shorter and put in a Duffy for Mayne. Whilst there is a lot to like about this as the mercurial Duffy kicked 3 (Edit I mistook Ugle for him of on the far side of the ground and so the WAFL has him at 5) on the weekend and had 3 other shots on a blustery day. He played very well in the first half when others in the forward line were not and was the only worthy target in the first half. Peel ran away with the game in the third as others started to get it together and he faded so perhaps a concern for him is his tank.
We need to be realistic and that means that there is nobody who can replace Mayne at the moment.

What is it you think Mayne does that is so irreplacable?
`
He is a 3rd tall and can hit a marking contest very hard and ensure a spill. Other than Pav (maybe Zac Clarke) I am not sure we have anyone that does this.

I am finding Mayne's lack of goals frustrating but I do think his courage in the air is something we are short on up forward.

To be honest I am not sure that what he does is irreplaceable but there seems to be a desire in the selection committee to have someone fill a role that he does. IMHO his role seems to be that of big tank medium tall defensive forward. To be honest I am not sure why this role is so important to us but others seem to think it is. My comment is really that isn't anyone else who fits that specific role. Perhaps I was not overt enough but my post was really more a question as to why we need that role filled as he is the only one who can but I actually think my buddy is starting to show enough to be considered.

I'm in two minds about Mayne. On the one hand I love his sharing of the ball around. On one of the footy shows (thing it was On the Couch) last week, they commented on how previous premiership teams such as Hawthorn Collingwood and Geelong, would it share it around inside 50 like it was some sort of manic obsession. Of course you get the odd selfish player for balance such as Franklin or Stevie J (ours is Walters), but how often would you see these teams take it from the boundary or on the 50m arc to around 30-35m out on a small angle? I also feel that his looking to pass it off all the time is encouraging our players to run into better positions, something which we are doing pretty pretty poorly atm.

On the other hand, I would like to see Mayne return to playing as a lead up forward as he gets good separation on his opponent when doing so. This could also lead to freeing up more space behind him for Pav and Tabs. Tbh I don't see why he can't do this, and still be the manic defensive player once the ball hits the deck.

Mzungu , can do everything Mayne does and a hell of a lot more. Good overhead mark & I reckon he would kick goals if he played in the forward line.

I think Mayne has great intent - his problem is that he is a terrible shot on goal. I have been impressed with his versatility this season. Is servicable down back and has good pressure up front (but needs to kick straighter). We need players like Mayne to lift if we are going to get the silverware this season.

But he isn't a 3rd tall.

Mayne is the same height as Barlow, Duffield, Blakely and Sheridan. He's taken 3 contested marks this season.
Yeah he is ok on the lead, but standing one-on-one, he rarely marks anything. Makes you wonder if high half forward, and using his pressure and chase in the midfield might not be an option

Mayne's pressure as medium forward, who could also take a mark on the lead, was outstanding a few years back, but given what he does is a requirement of every forward in a decent team, this season he's no better than the average. When someone like Jamie Cripps leads for forward pressure acts in the comp while averaging two goals a game, the team needs Mayne to do a little bit more than what he's shown the past two seasons.

Am one of his biggest fans but his overhead marking seems to have dropped off and we/he needs to get it back in a hurry cant understand why is the opposition playing a different type of defender on him now?

Is a 'jam tin' even a thing??

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Used to be. Have memories from my young childhood of my grandmother opening a tin of jam with a can opener, and the jam being smooth and almost jelly like, not with chunks of fruit and quite runny like we expect now. Maybe what the Americans call 'jelly'?? I'm picturing an SPC can or something like that. I'm also talking probably 40 years ago...

We need him to channel his inner 2012 form. 39 goals 7 behinds with an 84.8 percent conversion rate.

Was widely seen as the best set shot in the game. How he has gone from that to where he is at now baffles me.

Our team would be so much more potent if he could give us that 2012 output.

edit; I still rate him highly on his pressure acts and think he deserves a spot in the 22

Maynes output just doesn't cut it these days.

Sunday is judgement day for Mayne, Ballas, Pearce and Suban. If they cant do something in pressure time to breed youth.
