Opinion Is McGovern overrated?

This guy was so lucky we've had injuries so he could show us his skills. Our MC never had him ahead of Emac or MIich Brown. FFs he was even told to lose Kg or ever return to the club again. JK gets injured in 14, GOV kicks 10 in 4 games. His biggest break was 2015 when Emac and Miich brown were sidelined for a while so he took advantage of that and never looked back. I wonder how many Gov's we have in WAFL right now.

He played him a fair bit in 2014.

Any chance Barrass goes to Freo?? Best mates with that flog Mcarthy, and has stated previously that when he and Gov play in the same team, he is the s**t kicker. Had his best game against GWS when Gov was out. Plus he’s not getting straight back into the team currently with Schofield doing ok.

I hope not, but just a thought I had yesterday after hearing the Gov news.
Seriously doubt that McCarthy will see out his current contract with the lavenders. He seems to have serious issues.

I'm still talking about this because you don't seem to understand what exactly this thread was about. If you actually read the OP you'd quite clearly see me say " I am in no way saying McGovern is a bad player, but I am suggesting that perhaps his worth is being inflated due to the structure of our back line".

When I made the post there were rumours of him going at amounts in the 1.5-2 million range. Would you pay that much for him? If he signed for $2.5 mill a year for 7 years would he be worth it? How about $100 million a year for 13 years? There's clearly a cut-off point and a reasonable price tag for each player, I was clearly trying to assess where that was. Most of the other posters seem to have understood that.

I guess still on a high that the big fella stuck with west coast, then to see a thread created from a west coast supporter asking if he is overrated. Maybe a thread name like “Gov’s 5mil contract” or “Did we pay the right $” But yeah for what he brings to our game plan, he is worth the money.

And I can see other posters also jumped to defensive mode :p

It’s fair to say if eMac wasn’t injured we probably delisted Gov by now
Don't agree at all. Someone, or more than one, saw something special in him for him to be drafted as a rookie. He had a lot of injury problems initially but when he overcame these he began to dominate in the WAFL. Showed exceptional contested marking ability in pre-season games before becoming a regular AFL player. Simpson obviously saw something good in him. MacKenzie going down did give him a big opportunity which he grasped with both hands. Even if MacKenzie was still around 2 KPDs are needed. He is a big upgrade on MacKenzie. Would have to be along with Rance in two best backmen in the comp, and he is much more capable offensively than Rance.

Not quite sure what your point is?

My point is clear. He is worth every penny in response to this thread. However, he was lucky to be given a chance, as much as he showed inn WAFL, he does not tick the normal KPI's for AFL selection. Once again, I will say it.... How many more gems have we missed because they did not tick the general criteria. If I am o mistaken Dean cox also got his opportunity due to long term Gardiner Injury.

So I understand your point as being that he was lucky to get where he is. I would probably say yes and no. True most rookie players don't make the grade and have a harder path to success. On the other hand he has got to where he is due to his talent and hard work. It's not a fluke. Generally the cream rises to the top. There may be the odd 'Tim Kelly' or 'Gov' out there in the WAFL but I wouldn't think there are too many.

He’s our “quarter back”

Guy McKenna was dubbed that in the 1990s

While different and Gov is CHB he just links so many players to our structure .....

Kicked the goal after marking a mongrel from Lycett in the port game. ...that gets us 2nd.....he read that mongrel kick so well it wasn't even a contested mark.

2 minutes 48 to go in the grand final...let me set the scene....you *****.....know what happens next.

Is the best reader of a bal in flight that I've seen....bar maybe Wayne Carey

I still think the pay being mentioned for his next contract is too much, but, as you say, the flag makes things good

Nearly single-handedly won us the premiership with his incredible ability to take contested marks whilst simultaneously dying from internal bleeding and broken ribs.

Get the man a sponsorship with L'Oreal - because he's worth it.

Oh for sure. He just wouldn't have had a chance to unless there was the 21 others on the field.

There is the possibility we have almost 20% of our cap in Gaff and Gov next year. Just isn't ideal.

Won the Port game off his own boot, separating us on 64 points with Collingwood and Hawthorn on 60.
Had the circuit breaking play in the Grand Final, setting up the winner, with broken ribs and internal bleeding.

Give him the whole cap for all I care.

heading to his 3rd all australian in a row. not overrated. a defender who actually marks the ball is gold. also his ball use is excellent and the depth of his kicks is a great assest. a thinking footballer. Not blessed with speed but his other skills make him a fantastic footballer.

well at least this docker knows a great footballer when he sees one. some of your own supporters in this thread should own up to their misjudgment and have a good chuckle at themselves
