Is McGregor better than Perrie?

We've had discussions in here in the past few weeks how Kenny Mc should be back in the team and Ian Perrie is all but gone. Well thanks to someone who gave me the name of a site that has all things footy on it (I know, he's created a monster :o ) I discovered something interesting.

These are the all time stats for our three leading forwards:

Scott Welsh 164 games 9.2 possessions 3.5 marks 1.8 goals (average per game)

Ken McGregor 144 games 11.3 possessions 4.5 marks, 0.7 goals (apg)

Ian Perrie 116 games, 11.1 possessions 5.1 marks 1.1 goals (apg)

So is Kenny really better than Ian??

this conveniently ignores positional factors.

I say that as a fan of both Pez and Kenny, but it became a bit silly when you included welsh.

Well, he's every chance to be on the market according to my mail - of his own volition, not the club's.

He's very pissed off with Craig and the club in general at the moment.

Whether his inclusion in the team this week will result in a change of heart, I don't know.

We could be very active in the trade market this year.

What does he expect. He has had two very ordinary years. I must admit after the whole Ben Hart debacle, I have a totally differnet opinion on how players perceive themselves.

BTW for the record, McGregor is a better forward.

Stats don't tell the story with these two. The role that Perrie plays in the forward line lends itself to more stats than the role that McGregor plays in the forward line. McGregor is more the sort of forward to stay deep for a one out contest. Perrie plays out the ground and patrols the CHF to wing area so there's a higher likelihood of him getting the ball more regularly. On top of that, McGregor has played a lot more in the backline than Perrie has - which also contributes to a lower statistical comparison.

Stats don't tell the story between these two. McGregor is better, always has been and for the record I've always been a Perrie fan that is now more than happy to have seen him play his last game for the Crows. Good servant over the years, but never much more than that.

I can't wait until we recruit a key forward whose role it is to actually "kick goals". It seems the role of our recent tall forwards has been as a "decoy". "workhorse", "further up the ground" etc etc.

this is a very good thing.....:thumbsu:.

While I hope we retain Kenny for depth reasons - it's time to start moving on from the makeshift forwards we've been served by over the last 10 years.

Welsh, Trent, Porps
rotating mid, Gill, Bird

is a very good fwd line to begin 2008 with. Bassett back frees up Stevens for a pinch hitting role anywhere and IMO deserves to be retained in and around the 22.

The return of Trent and Bass, and the emegence of Gill as a short to medium term option further marginalises players like Perrie and McGregor IMO - but if one was to be retained it would have to be Ken.

I agree. Thanks to some crafty trading, let's hope we look back at 2007 as one of the turning points in our next premiership. If we trade Kenny, Meesen and possibly Mattner we should be able to get some nice picks. IMO this year we must not recruit mature age players, get as many kids into the club as we possible can.

BTW the forward line you mentioned would still be very competitive, and if we can avoid injury, a chance at top 4.

Hahaha, true. We have so many decoys that we confuse ourselves at times. Maybe our plan is to have enough decoy forwards to account for every defender on the other team that we have midfielders running in for open goals U/11 style.

You forgot "role player", a euphemism for "can't mark, kick or actually play"

Perrie drops the ball all the time. I dont think hes ready for the AFL. He is strong and everything but uno...
Kennys miles infront:)
Go CROWS

I agree tenfold! How long has it been? Modra? Downsborough?
Ken averages 1.8 goals per game, thats 40 a year which is not bad for a player who has spent a fair bit of time as a (decent) defender. Not saying he's the go to man and the answer to our forwardline woes but if hes your 2nd best forward to a classier FF its not a bad setup when you look at this weeks forwardline.

That is very sad to hear, don't like when players and clubs fall out but I have always rated McGregor's efforts up forward, he has had to pay a fair bit over the years because he has been forced to play in defence a lot due to necessity and it is pretty obvious he doesn't like that role.

Our KPP depth is shizen, I hope we can pick up a handy player or two in the off-season, inexpensively, otherwise I will have to endure dead wood like Leigh Brown playing... that is a depressing prospect.

Yep, it is sad and it would be great if Kenny stays but I can't say I blame him. I would want to leave, he's been just about BOG for a month for the Eagles and just sneaks into the team after performing well in the crows before getting a minor injury. FFS Perrie was useless for three years and he's only just been dropped, still emergency!
This week is it for Ken, its make or break time for the patron Saint of the Adelaide 'fros.
