What people have overlooked is that Fed deliberately thrown away a set in both matches.

The guy knows he doesn't have the stamina for 5 sets, so he takes a high risk and throws a set.

Going toe to toe i.e each set 7-6 fed gets beaten 9/10 times against nadal because of his age.

Dumb thread is dumb. He may not have the aura he once had anymore, but his form this fortnight was decent in the context of the last few years. MTF-standard thread. You don't make a thread like this after a player makes a hardcourt final and takes it to 5 sets against Federer, you just don't. Age will catch up eventually, but Nadal has shown he is still a danger man. No one thought Nadal would still be making Grand Slam finals in 2017, even in bumper years like 2010 and 2013.

Perhaps.

You say that though, as if he clobbered him last night.

Nadal wasn't near his best - even compared to his own modest standards his serve was well down - and still probably should have won.
To beat Nadal 6-3 in the 5th after being down 3-1 IS a clobbering.

Guccione could pull a run 5 good games from his arse once in a while.

It wouldn't somehow classify him as clobbering anyone.
Little picture no, but over their history, this victory was stunning for me. Agree, not a literal clobbering, but no fluke either. Fed was not meant to beat Stan either.

I agree with some of your points but I think it's pretty clear that the courts were a lot quicker than as described by your "blue clay" nickname, which goes some way to explaining the result. I would also argue that when Nadal played aggressively he was the better player almost without fail, but kept sinking into default passive mode.

Rafa just needs some confidence I think. If he can stay fit - if being the key word - I think he still has the game. Whether he has the mental strength to do it anymore is something we don't know yet.

This was the problem. He was passive for too many points.

It would be a shock if he doesn't end the year as number one now. He's not having to defend anything whereas Murray has all those points from Wimbledon etc.
